Netball at BMS
Netball has been the major team sport for girls in the Spring Term since the
introduction of co-education in 2003. We have 5 floodlit courts (two of which have
been recently resurfaced) along with an indoor court.
Our coaching staff include former England coach and Director of Coaching at
Mavericks, Maggie Jackson MBE. Super League players Sasha Corbin, Eboni
Beckford-Chambers, Ashleigh Neale and Sam May have also been in to the school
recently to coach the girls.
Netball is played predominantly in the Spring Term during Games with A, B and often
C teams regularly representing the School at every age group. We host several
tournaments at BMS and during the Autumn Term we enter the local district and
county competitions. This year the Under 12s won the county tournament with the
Under 13s and Under 18s runners-up. The Under 18 team also qualified for the
Regional Finals.
We regularly have girls that represent their county and region, with OBM Bea
Skingsley representing England at Under 19 and currently playing for Super League
team Manchester Thunder.
In addition, we organise a Girls’ Senior Sports Tour biennially to destinations such as
South Africa in the summer holidays.
Sport at BMS
Sport has a strong historical position within the School, and has produced achievers
of note in the national and international arenas including Monty Panesar (Cricket)
and Tim Foster (Rowing). We currently have Julie Rogers (Paralympics 2012 & 2016)
at the school. Our philosophy centres on the development of the whole person –
body, mind and spirit – and we pursue it rigorously.
In recent years, sport at Bedford Modern School has gone through a period of
significant development, especially with the successful introduction of co-education
in 2003.
We have a very proud and successful sporting history and our aim is to take our
sporting provision to a new level. Sport and physical activities play an important part
in school life and are vital in the development of our students. We offer a variety of
opportunities with staffing, resourcing and period allocation all reflecting the high
priority given to sport and exercise within the School.
Throughout their time at BMS, our students have the opportunity to be involved in
many different sports and clubs, regardless of ability. We currently offer over 30
different physical activities, with more than 100 teams and 1000 fixtures during the
year. This can include training camps and sports tours as well as hosting overseas
teams. We also have an extensive House Programme which allows students to
compete in over 20 different sports.
The benefits of sport and physical activity are considerable and well documented. We
hope that all students will leave BMS with a desire to continue taking part in regular
exercise in an activity or sport they have discovered in their time here.

The Faculty is led by Mr Patrick Jerram and comprises 34 members of teaching,
coaching and administrative staff across the departments of PE, Games & Sport. In
addition the Faculty is supported by over 20 of the common room teaching staff. We
have outstanding quality within our Sports Faculty with many teachers and coaches
recognised at national level within their respective sport.
The strength of the team is at the heart of the success of the Faculty. We believe in
the importance of collaborative working and strive to maintain a strong foundation
upon which colleagues can build their individual approaches to teaching and learning.
The Sports Faculty oversees all sport at the school from Year 3 to Year 13.
Part of the Sports Faculty, the Physical Education Department is a vibrant, bustling
and thriving department. The Department is staffed by seven fully qualified Physical
Education specialists and has two main teaching rooms which are well resourced with
up-to-date audio visual equipment. We actively encourage the use of ICT in lessons
and we utilise tablets both within and outside the classroom to enhance learning.
Our team has a broad range of expertise within teaching, examining and sporting
disciplines. Most members of the Department are responsible for specific sports in
which they have a particular knowledge and expertise with some having taught
across other subject areas.
Sport at Bedford Modern School is categorized under three main headings:
1.) Physical Education
Physical Education includes all of those practical activities that take place in the
Sports Hall, Gymnasium and Swimming Pool, though during the Summer Term many
of these PE based activities will take place outdoors. The teaching of GCSE
(EdExcel), AS & A2 (OCR) academic courses also fall under this remit. Our academic
results and PE curriculum can be found in the appendix.
2.) Games
Games encompasses all activities that by their nature are Field or Outdoor based and
which normally take place in the double period in the afternoon known as 'Games'.
Our Games programme for the year can be found in the appendix.
3.) Co-Curricular Activities
Co-Curricular activities encompass all of the many and varied activities that take
place during the lunch hour, after school, weekends and holidays. Many of these
activities will take the form of team practices and training sessions (Team Sport) but
also includes activities designed to offer all pupils in the school an opportunity to
take part in 'sport' (Club Sport).
Some areas of the curriculum, notably Swimming and Athletics take place during
both PE and Games periods. In the case of Swimming, there are specific periods set
aside for Swimming in the Junior School which is developed in Years 7 & 8. From
Year 9 upwards Swimming takes place during Games lessons.
Similarly, Athletics takes place in both PE and Games lessons. In Year 7 students
experience an introductory ‘Indoor Athletics’ module alongside the more traditional
programme which is extended in Year 8. An optional Athletics programme takes
place in games in the Summer Term from Year 8 onwards.
The ethos of the Department is to offer the pupils an opportunity to learn, improve
and perfect basic skills in the early years at the school. As the pupils progress
through the school the syllabus broadens and allows a degree of specialisation in a
number of sports.
Pupils, particularly the Sixth Form are able to pursue an interest in a sport of their
choice, having had the opportunity to select a sport in which they have received a
'basic grounding' it is envisaged that their choice of option will be based on a
reasonable understanding of the skills and techniques involved.
Whilst the ethos of the department is to offer an increasingly broad based syllabus
from which all pupils can experience some enjoyment and success, the need to
maintain the highest possible standards in school representative sports is clearly
recognised.
Bedford Modern School has a long and proud tradition in a variety of sports. Our
teams boast particularly fine records over the past years with Rugby Union, Rowing,
Netball, Hockey, Table Tennis, Water Polo, Association Football, Athletics, Skiing and
Equestrian Teams gaining many successes at regional and national level. Success in
all of these sports has resulted from quality coaching and a considerable
commitment from both the pupils and staff involved. Everyone associated with
representative school sport at BMS continually strives to maintain and improve upon
this success that promotes the name of Bedford Modern School.
Within Physical Education Years 7, 8 & 9 enjoy two 55 minute lessons, whilst Years
10 & 11 pupils participate in a single 55 minute lesson during a 10 day cycle.
Games follow a set pattern of one afternoon per 5 day cycle with the whole year
group taking part. Year 5 & 6 however, receive 3 Games sessions over 10 days. To
support the games programme there is one 55 minute Key Skills lessons per week
for Years 3-7 where the fundamental skills of the core ‘game’ are developed.
Both the PE and Games programmes are evenly divided between 'Winter' and
'Summer' sports, Individual and Team Sports and Contact and Non-Contact sports.
The Department has very clear 'Safety Codes' for all
procedures in the event of an accident. Pupils

All members of the department are encouraged to keep abreast of modern
developments in Physical Education and therefore actively encouraged to attend
inset courses.
The department also adopts the most up to date BAALPE
recommendations for all of its sports. The department strives for good practice
across all areas of Physical Education.
We cater for all abilities and for our elite performers we have the BMS Performance
Programme. The scheme currently has 20 athletes across 13 different sports. Our
full time strength and conditioning coach manages these students who are given
individualized support which may include areas such as coaching, strength and
conditioning coaching and programming, nutritional advice, sports psychology,
medical screening, physiotherapy support and mentoring.
The Faculty runs a number of major events in the year including numerous festivals,
tournaments and sports days. The sporting year culminates in our annual Sports
Awards Evening which recognizes and celebrates our achievers.
To ensure practitioners are able to concentrate on teaching and coaching, the Faculty
has two full time sports administrators. Their responsibility includes organizing all
fixtures, transport, catering and officials, procurement, calendar and database
entries as well as fielding enquiries and providing the day to day administration
support necessary to run a highly effective and efficient faculty.
