The orchards are stunning & alive with the buzz of the bees as the clusters of swollen fruit buds burst into beautiful blossom. Bees and other insects are vital in the pollination of the cherry blossom. In fact most cherry trees require cross pollination between varieties. Some growers actually bring hives into their orchards to assist with pollination. As the blossom falls the new cherries, even smaller than a pea, can be seen & their development eagerly observed with only 8 weeks or so to go... • It is estimated that 4,000 tonnes will be harvested if we have good weather! Many of these will be exported interstate and overseas. • 95% of SA cherries are grown in the Adelaide Hills and Fleurieu Peninsula; from Ashton to Willunga, and 14 other districts in between.
