The deep, fresh green of the orchards & the much anticipated colouring of the first of the cherries brings with it
new activity. The first of the pickers, much chatter, buckets,
crates, bins, boxes, pallets, motor bikes, trucks...
This is what we are all here for!
Depending on the weather and available varieties, these
beautiful gifts from nature can be enjoyed from mid November through until January.
Late Spring & Summer.... red, ripe cherries!
The orchards are stunning & alive with the buzz of the bees
as the clusters of swollen fruit buds burst into beautiful
blossom. Bees and other insects are vital in the pollination
of the cherry blossom. In fact most cherry trees require
cross pollination between varieties. Some growers actually
bring hives into their orchards to assist with pollination. As
the blossom falls the new cherries, even smaller than a pea,
can be seen & their development eagerly observed with only
8 weeks or so to go...
•
It is estimated that 4,000 tonnes will be harvested if we have good weather! Many of these will
be exported interstate and overseas.
•
95% of SA cherries are grown in the Adelaide
Hills and Fleurieu Peninsula; from Ashton to
Willunga, and 14 other districts in between. Each
district has its own micro-climate, meaning cherries are ripe at different times.
•
The South Australian cherry season is from mid
November to mid January, with the peak time
being December.
•
For great recipes go to our website:

Cherries are picked ripe and sweet from the
tree, they do not continue to ripen once they are
picked.
Cherries - a true “super fruit”! Yes, when it comes to
cherries more is better. Emerging studies* continue to
explore the role of cherries in:
•
Keep them cool to keep them fresh –
so put that bowl of cherries in the fridge!
•
•
Store dry and loosely packed in a closed container in the fridge until ready to serve (0-4 degrees
is best).
•
•
•
Leave the stems on to maintain freshness.
•
To serve – rinse under cold water, drain and
enjoy.
•
Remove stones for young children,
or for cooking, using a cherry/olive stoner.
Spoil yourself and enjoy cherries anytime:
on a cheeseboard, as a snack, in the lunch
box........Remember: 1 cup fresh cherries 80
calories only!-
It is up to the orchard whether they charge an entry
fee or not. Most orchards will charge a small entry
fee to cover the use of their facilities and the cost of
any cherries that are eaten while you are picking. This
means you can feel free to try out the different varieties and see what you prefer!
What’s the best way to check if the orchard is
open?
Most orchards have a website or social media that
you can check before making the journey. If you have
a special question or request, email or call if
necessary.
Freezing
Yes! cherries freeze well to use for cooking throughout the year!
•
Rinse and drain the cherries.
•
Leave the stones in – they pop out easily when
squeezed during defrosting.
•
Place in freezer bags or lidded container and
freeze.
Then visit our website & follow the links for more

What should I wear to go cherry picking?
Before visiting an orchard it is always best to check
the weather forecast for the day. In hot weather,
remember to slip (on light shirt) slop (on some sunscreen) slap (on a hat and sunglasses)! Wear comfortable closed toe shoes. Remember it can be cooler
in the hills, so bring a jacket if the weather is mild.

Australian cherries this summer.

Why do cherry prices vary?
As cherry crops are so dependent on the weather,
the size and quality of crops can vary from year to
year. Sometimes a crop may have minimal sellable
fruit. Under these circumstances, the sellable cherries demand a higher price. Some years the weather
conditions can be perfect and the orchard may have
a bumper crop. Under these circumstances you may
see the price of cherries drop.
The orchards become a sea of beautiful golden,
red & brown & the secateurs are out!
Trees are pruned to; Keep branches at a good picking
height; Rejuvenate and invigorate the trees ensuring desired
yields per tree; Produce larger fruit.
Watering by irrigation continues until the rains arrive...
Follow the Map & visit one or more of these
Adelaide Hills cherry orchards – each has a unique
experience waiting just for you!
Cherry Season is generally from mid to late November
lasting until late December to early January. However,
this depends on what varieties are available and can
vary year to year. Check with the individual orchards
to see if they have early or late varieties.
•
Is the stem a fresh green?
Is the skin firm and glossy?
Taste! Different varieties vary in flavour and
texture.
Please ask the orchardist/greengrocer first
before tasting!
Many varieties of cherries are grown so you can
enjoy fresh, luscious SA cherries throughout the
summer, from November right through to January.

Frequently Asked Questions
Our existing cherry varieties, bred in cold climate
countries, require hundreds of hours between 1 & 12 degrees C to enable the fruit to set. This is called the
‘chill factor’. Throughout these cold months the leaves have
gone but the clusters of fruit buds for next season’s crop
are already formed...

Over 30 varieties of cherries are grown in SA. The
top six varieties being: Merchant, Stella, Lapin,
Simone, Van & Sweetheart. However, you will find
that each grower will have something interesting, with different varieties, some unique to their
farm. Everyone tries to plant early, mid season
and late varieties, so that their picking season
will last from 5-9 weeks. Some growers also have
sour cherries just before Christmas, and white
cherries which are highly prized and something
