English II Honors Summer Reading Assignment Dear Student, Welcome to English II- Honors! In order to prepare you for this year, you will be reading two books over the summer. Everyone must read The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger and then you should choose ONE of the following novels to read: 1. Everyone Must Read: The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger 2. Choice Reading: (Choose one of the following) 1. The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chobosky 2. Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson 3. Looking for Alaska by John Green A. Required Reading Assignment: As you read The Catcher in the Rye, you will be completing SIGNPOSTS. You must identify and analyze quotes that represent each of the signposts: Aha Moment, Words of the Wiser, Memory Moment, Tough Questions, Again and Again, and Contrast/Contradiction. For each of the signposts you must identify and analyze 1 quote for a total of 6 entries. Make sure the quotes span the novel, meaning you have a few from the beginning, middle, and end. Be sure to cite the quotes properly. The analysis of the quote(including the answer to the anchor question) should be 8-10 sentences. Be sure to lead into the quote by explaining who is speaking and what is happening in the context of the novel. Then explain how the quote relates to the signpost. Look for the deeper meaning of the quote and what it may prove. The signposts must be typed, and a hard copy must be handed in on the first day of school. The assignment will also be submitted to Turnitin.com later in the week so make sure you keep an electronic copy. Attached is a template to follow when creating the signposts and a rubric for how you will be graded. ● Cite Properly (Author’s last name #). ● Must be typed Times New Roman 12pt font. ● Formal tone! NO FIRST/SECOND PERSON PRONOUNS! NO “I” “ME” “YOU” ETC. ● Be prepared to submit the work to Turnitin.com the first week of school. B. Choice Reading Assignment: Choose one of the choice books listed above. While reading use post-it notes to mark: -Important quotes -Character development -Symbols & Motifs -Developing themes -Connections to the real world or outside text (Especially connections to The Catcher in the Rye) Post-it notes should span the novel and you should aim for at least 15 total. One word responses are not acceptable. Along with post-it notes, you will be collecting/creating images and quotes that best represent your main character and the conflicts he/she faces in the novel. For the first day of school you will bring in the following: 1. 3 Images that represent the main character’s transformation (one from the beginning, one from the middle and one from the end of the novel) 2. 2 Images that represent relationships between the main character and another character in the novel 3. 1 Image that represents a symbol from the novel 4. 2 quotes from the novel...one that sums up your character’s voice/personality and another that sums up your character’s main conflict. 5. 1 quote from the novel that you think showcases the main theme of the novel. 6. 1 outside/famous quote that your character would identify with (this would be something they may post on their Instagram page as inspiration or to explain how they are feeling) * These can be cut outs from magazines, hand drawn pictures (if you have the artistic ability), photographs, and/or printed images from the internet(in color). *You must type and print out the quotes and bring in hard copies of the images because we will be creating collages the first week of school.
