Thoughts From Tina... Our storytime topics this month were gardens, dogs, fire safety, and sneezing. I used the skills learned in the ALA class I recently took, Storytime Shenanigans, planning storytimes around an awesome book instead of picking a theme and trying to find books that fit. The resulting storytimes were both more engaging and entertaining. For the final storytime of the (school) year, we held a “messy” storytime. I put together several “sensory” bins, such as soil with June 2016 By Tina Dalton, Youth Services Librarian bulldozers, dried rice dyed in rainbow colors, and cloud sand (flour and baby oil). The kids had a wonderful time. We finished up our tween video game club meetings on May 26. This club ran on Thursdays throughout the month of May. We had two game systems running consecutively: Wii U and Xbox 360. We also set up four laptops for Minecraft gaming. We used two projectors, and the kids really enjoyed playing their games on the large screen. The kids had a great time, and have requested more gaming programs. Memorials For May... This program was held at the Cuba Cultural Center and was modeled after the Food Network show, Chopped. There were two rounds of cooking, an appetizer round and a dessert round. We started with four teams of two, eliminating two teams after the appetizer round. The teams were given three mystery ingredients they were required to use, in addition to some stock pantry items they could choose from. The appetizer mystery ingredients were Canadian bacon, Dr. Pepper, and a tomatillo. The dessert mystery ingredients were goldfish crackers, coconut milk, and a mango. We had three adults volunteer as judges, and all judges said they were very impressed with how well the teens did cooking. They got along well in the kitchen, they all had fun, and were great sports about supporting the teams that moved on to the next round. It was a really fun and successful activity, and the teens want to do it again this summer. We have scheduled another “Chopped” event for August 1. Coming Up...
