MARKET NEWS FOR TUESDAY 28TH FEBRUARY
Manager’s Mutterings
Another good week with 458 head of cattle and 2,637 head of sheep forward
today with trade overall better than predicted especially within the sheep
department.
Birthday boy Tom was faced with a good entry of hoggs, many heavyweights,
but was able to sell them well and better than most other outlets.
I had a few less numbers forward today, but the quality was very high.
Today 12 Charolais x and Limousin x Steers from Shortwood Estates, Lamport
proved the heart of the sale with all selling between 200p/kg and 229p/kg or
£1,285 to £1,475 and there should be 12 more for next week.
Barren cow prices on fire with averages up at least 10p on previous weeks as
they are wanted.
Ben found prices firm within the store departments with Emerson of Leicester
having the best trade of the day with £1,260 for an 18 month old Charolais
x Steer. Numbers are on the increase and trade has not altered in the last
few weeks with buyers here every week for everything. A good entry of 214
weaned calves today with some quality about, Robert Donger of Muston
topped the market with steers to £885 and heifers to £795 for Charolais x
cattle.
Barrie Williamson had over 100% increase in numbers and received a keen
demand. Gaulby Lodge Farm, Kings Norton sold 2 British Blue bulls for £390
each and Macer Bros topped the heifers at £280 for Simmentals. A good
consignment of 20 Friesian bulls from Pilkington Farms, Barby had a good day
topping at £145.
Next week is our First Spring Store Cattle Catalogue Sale. We have extended
the entry deadline to Thursday noon. Catalogues will be available to view on
the website by Thursday evening or pick up a copy in the market office.

Prime Hoggs (1,577)
All in all, a better trade than expected with all buyers wanting hoggs. The
heaviest would be less but 45-49kg still easiest to sell. As long as hoggs
are good meat the buyers want them albeit at a price. Enough of the
“handyweights” would be plenty lean enough this week.
10 buyers on 13 accounts helping the job along this week.
A top p/kg of 186p/kg for S Turner, Belton and per head of £90 for NC
