Advanced/ Gifted 6th Grade Summer Reading 2015Assignment 2016 For your summer reading enjoyment you will read the story of friendship between a boy and an old mongrel dog named Old Yeller . The author, Fred Gipson, spins a wonderful tale the whole family can enjoy. In addition to the project below, you must complete the GRAMMAR COMPONENT. Instructions follow this document. After finishing your book, choose one of the following project options to be turned into your language arts teacher the first week of school. You will need to include all 7 elements in your project. This project will be a formative grade. Here are your options (choose one): 1) Create a multi-media presentation (Power Point or other electronic medium) 2) Create a scrapbook 3) Create a poster (not larger than 11x17) 4) Create a comic strip 5) Write a book report Your project should include all of the following elements: 1) Description of the main characters including important traits and their role in the plot development. 2) Description of the setting that includes the place and time period. 3) Explain what point of view the author used in the book, and give three examples. Was this choice for point of view effective? Explain 1st, 2nd, or 3rd person POV. 4) Find three examples of figurative language in your book. Include the page number and explain what the author meant by its use. (Identify metaphor, simile, personification, hyperbole) 5) Explain one of the major conflicts in the book. (is it character v. character, character v. self, character v. nature, character v. society) 6) Explain the theme (life lesson learned) and how you might apply it to your life. 7) Write a brief opinion of the book. Include why you would or would not recommend it. Be prepared to share it with your classmates.
