ELAC/LCAP Meeting held
Last night HHS held one of four LCAP general
meetings and ELAC Meetings with parents. The
focus was on LCAP to get parent input but also to
explain the process so that parents could have a
better understanding of how the funding works, the
funding formula, the state priorities, the district
goals and school goals and how the funds are used
to achieve those goals. There were over 70 parents
and students present as shown in picture. There
will be another parent meeting, a student meeting
and a teacher meeting. Principal Gary Mayeda,
Associate Principal Mr. Arturo Rodriguez, and
Migrant Guidance Tech Mrs. Ultreras were the presenters.
Faculty/Staff of the Week
This Faculty of the this Week are the counselors; Ms. Bogan, Mrs. Gomez, Ms. Lopez, Mrs. Martinez, and
Mr. Sierra. Taking care of our students and making sure they are on track to graduate with their credits is
just one of the many jobs they take care of. They are also great people who can help you when you need
to talk to. Congratulations Counselors and thank you for all you do. YOU make HHS better!!!!
February - Celebrating Black History Month
Did you know that potato chips were invented by a black man? Well, in 1853, a restaurant customer sent
his French fries back to the kitchen because they were too thick. The chef, George Crum, cut a bunch of
potatoes as thin as he could, fried them crisp, and the potato chip was born.
Other important facts: February marks the observance of many important dates in African-American
history. Among them is February 1, 1865, Abraham Lincoln signed the 13th Amendment abolishing
slavery. The 15th Amendment, granting black men the right to vote was adopted on February 3, 1870; on
February 12, 1909 the NAACP was founded; and on February 25, 1870, Hiram Rhodes Revels, the first
black US Senator, took the oath of office.

other gain in their understanding of this topic.

YES Academy
YES Academy sophomores and juniors visited California Lutheran University for an excellent tour that
included a “real life” dorm room, new science building and new sports facilities, eating areas, library, and
group study areas. Students were also provided with information about applying to the university,
financial aid, major areas of study, and campus life.
YES Academy students hosted Haycox Elementary school students at the last HHS league soccer game as
part of the community service/internship component of the academy. HHS students divided the
youngsters into groups, taught them several cheers, then, engaged the students in conversation and cheer
during the game. Fun was had by all!
