PONYBOY
PONYBOY

...and I could still hear a thick voice: “Need
a hair cut, greaser?” I shivered.
This is Ponyboy, the night where he got jumped by the Socs. This quote shows that he cannot
protect himself, is a crybaby, and doesn’t use common sense.
Ponyboy himself knows that he is a crybaby/scardy-cat, for he compares his beating to
Johnny’s, but still cries anyways. He even shivers, thinking about it, when the Socs
didn’t hurt him that bad at all.
Common Sense- Would Ponyboy have been jumped if he was with someone like Two-bit,
Dally, or Sodapop?
NOoo~ Ponyboy likes to be alone to think, so he didn’t really think about the consequences
when he is scared of getting jumped.

“I couldn’t use this,” I said, dropping the
pop bottle.”I couldn’t cut anyone...”
This quote shows more of Ponyboy’s innocent side.
Ponyboy doesn’t like fights like the others do(except maybe Johnny)
As stated in the quote, he has never cut anyone or used violence on purpose, unless it was
self defense.
Two-Bit wonders why he handed Ponyboy the weapon
later, for even he knows that Ponyboy wouldn’t have used it.
Ponyboy is also quite caring and kind, for example he is reassuring/comforting
Cherry in the quote when she gets scared of a fight that might occur.

He thinks I’m a pain in the neck...he can’t stand
me. I bet he wishes he could stick me in a home
somewhere, and he’d do it, too, if Soda’d let him.
From this content, I see that Ponyboy is actually very stubborn and headstrong.
Sodapop, Two-bit, and Johnny assures Ponyboy that Darry loves him and that he only yells at
him because he worries about him.
Ponyboy, however held on to his claim, even though he knew that he was wrong and
that his ears were turning red from embarrassment.
This proves that even though Ponyboy is smart, he can be subjective and stubborn.
The funny thing is that he, himself knows he’s being mean and unreasonable.

“He Ain’t a Soc,” I said, “he’s just a guy. He
just wanted to talk.”
Being as brainy as he is, Ponyboy finally sees things in a different, way or in a
different perspective.
Randy talked to Ponyboy about Bob and how his parents spoiled him. He also stated how pointless
fights were. After the talk, Ponyboy saw things in a different light.
Ponyboy realizes that the Socs are just people too. He saw that if he didn’t stick the a label to
them, that they were just as humane as the greasers were. The rest of the Gang didn’t get it and
they still said stuff like Mr.Super Soc and other names.

Big Deal. I busted the end off my bottles and held
on the neck and tossed away my cigarette. “You
get back into the car or you get split.”
Wow! Major Change!
This was Ponyboy as he was talked to a bunch of Socs that looked like they wanted to
beat him up.
Instead of cowering and calling for help like usual, he’s like “Want a piece of me?”
Two-bit was like “OMG” and told him not to act so tough and so on.
So What Changed him? - After experiencing Bob’s death, running away, Johnny’s
death, Dally’s death, and problems at home, Ponyboy toughened up. He grew and that
innocent quality of his that Johnny told him to keep, was gradually fading away.
