An axis of symmetry divides a shape into halves that are mirror images of each other. Axis Axis of of symmetry symmetry axis of symmetry 1 axis 2 axes 1 Colour each to make a symmetrical pattern. Use a mirror to help you. Axis of symmetry Axis of symmetry Rotations: full turn, three-quarter turn, half turn, quarter turn. 2 Mark the axis of symmetry, then draw each shape after a clockwise quarter turn is made. a c b C Shape patterns ACMMG091 Location and transformation • Create symmetrical patterns, pictures and shapes with and without digital technology. Making Making aa shape shape Shape patterns Let’s make a tessellating shape. You need a 4 cm square of cardboard, scissors and sticky tape. 1 Draw a simple shape on one side of your square. 2 Cut it out. 3 Sticky tape it to the opposite side. Hint. It is a good idea to sticky tape it front and back. 1 2 3 You now have a tessellating shape. (You can start with a simple shape, eg and then make harder ones.) 1 Trace around your shape to make a colourful tessellating pattern. ACMMG088 Shape • Compare and describe two dimensional shapes that result from combining and splitting common shapes, with and without the use of digital technologies.
