The Star October 24, 2014 Math New Friends have been working very hard learning new addition strategies. We have been focusing on adding by counting on, adding using double facts, and using double facts to find doubles plus one and doubles minus one. We created a “Double Checker” flipchart in class to “double check” our double facts. Each child brought a sample home to use while completing homework or playing any of the math games that are sent home. To help your child at home, spend some time practicing addition facts with sums to 10. Helping your child increase his/her addition fact fluency will be very beneficial as we move forward with addition and problem solving. Old Friends have finished Chapter 2 and began working on Chapter 3. They will be bringing the Chapter 2 workbook home next week. Any unfinished pages do not need to be done as homework, but feel free to use the workbook as a review. Chapter 3 is focusing on single digit addition and subtraction. Our first lesson focused on the “doubles plus 1 and doubles minus 1 facts” Here is how we worked on it in class. If the problem was… 4+5= students can choose either: 4+4+1=9 or Halloween Party Our class Halloween party is next Friday from 2:00-2:45. Prior to the party, the children will show off their Halloween costumes by participating in the school-wide Halloween parade throughout the halls. Below are some important reminders about Halloween: ∗ Children will have about 15 minutes to change into their costumes. Please have your child practice changing into his/her costume with minimal assistance. *Label EVERYTHING: costume, costume accessories, the bag the costume travels to school in, even the clothes your child wears to school if he/she needs to take them off to put on his/her costume. There will be many children changing in the classroom and the bathroom, which makes it easy for things to get misplaced. ∗Children should come to school in their regular school clothes; they should not wear their costumes to school. However, if your child is being a black cat for Halloween, for example, he/she can wear all black clothes to school if that is part of the costume. *All food for the party should be dropped off at school between 9:00-9:30 on Friday or have your child bring the party items to school. 5+5-1=9 Veteran’s Day Assembly This is just one strategy students can use. We will continue to work on other strategies. MAP and ISEL Scores Today your child is bringing home the scores from either the MAPs or ISEL tests. Old Friends took the MAPs tests and New Friends took the ISEL tests. There is a cover page on each score sheet that explains the results. On Friday, November 7th at 2:00 we will be hosting a Veteran’s Day Assembly. The students have learned a patriotic song in music and will be singing it at this assembly. All family members are welcome, especially veterans! Important Information/Dates • Thank You I really appreciate your help with remembering the Red Ribbon Theme days.
