Third Leading Cause of Death

Mondays Bring Some Positivity
By Julian Cruz
Weekends are the break all students need
from school. I'm happy when Friday rolls
around, and we go home. Then Monday
comes again, dreaded Monday, the beginning of the school week.
This is the day we no longer get to sleep
in and have to do work, but school bring
the chance to see friends. Sure, we have to
do work, but all in all Monday is worth it.
It starts the week off. People hate it, but
it's always there. Next Monday, don't see it
as the day that starts school. See it as a day
you get to see friends again.

This week in my ProCom class, I read 10 shocking medical
mistakes by John Bonifield, CNN and Elizabeth Cohen, CNN
Senior Medical Correspondent. What I found most shocking
about this article is that doctors sometimes leave medical equipment inside patients. This happens because of surgical equipment miscounts used
inside a patient during an operation. The consequence of this is that tools
get left inside the body and harm the patient. The article states, “If you
have unexpected pain, fever or swelling after surgery, ask if you might
have a surgical instrument inside you.”
I also found identity is a reason that leads to mistakes. By this I mean
that the doctor could have the wrong patient, the doctor operates the
wrong body part, or the doctors is an imposter. The cause of operating on
the wrong body part is usually because a patient's chart is incorrect, a surgeon misreads it, or surgical draping obscures marks that denote the correct side of the operation. The consequence of this is that the surgeon cuts
into the wrong side of a patient's body. This can be prevented if the patient reaffirms with the nurse and the surgeon of the correct body part and
side of the operation.
I had not realized these things were occurring in hospitals. The article
even stated that medical mistakes are the third leading cause of death in
America. After evaluating this issue, I found that paying more attention
and better security can lead to decreases in medical mistakes.

Loving Animals Requires Owners’ Action
By Brittany Trevino
Animals are cute. I think animals are precious because they are always there when you are upset. I love
animals because they do the funniest things, and I hate to see animals that get abused and mistreated.
Some animals have been sent to animal shelters because they have been abandoned, and the ASPCA or
other organizations have been so generous to take them in and help them get better and develop happiness again. Many of the animals that get sent to the shelter die because they are hurt and scared, and
some are put to sleep.
I've always wanted to be a vet so that I can be the one to take care of them as well. I think that helping animals will turn
out to be a great thing because they will not be afraid of it. They sometimes if someone is going to take care of them
and show love. Each person who has animals can help by properly caring for them.

Technology Pushes Limits Every Day
By Julian Cruz
Congratulations, Ropes Band!
STATE CHAMPIONS!

Technology we all rely on it. From the wheel to the car, technology is
getting more and more advanced. It's good that this is happening.
New medicine is being discovered. There are new ways to build, and
they can be environmentally friendly. People around the world are
getting more and more connected. We can send
mail in an instant instead or writing a letter and
waiting.
The world is getting faster at doing things. This
lets us get on with our day and accomplish things.
We travel. We have maps when we want them for where we want
them. We, the people of 2015, have discovered and made many things.
Liquid biopsy is something recent that helps detect cancer. Project
Loon is a project by Google to let people communicate where cell
phone towers can't reach by allowing them to go online for the first
time. Technology is great. What will be next?

Humans in Antarctica?
By Alan Chavez
Antarctica has never had an indigenous population. It wasn't until
between 1820 to 1899 that humans came into contact with Antarctica.
This is because the technology wasn't present until this time. It can be
considered as a “discovery” because there have never been any indigenous people present. A strong, thriving society cannot be formed
there because of the temperatures. The average temperature in Antarctica is about -49°C. The article states, “No-one lives in Antarctica indefinitely in the way that they do in the rest of the world. It has no
commercial industries, no towns or cities, no permanent residents.”
Only scientists and tourists are currently allowed to inhabit Antarctica.
Scientists are able to stay there longer, but tourists are only allowed to
stay there for a limited time. In order for tourists to visit, they have to
make their travel plans very clear to their country’s government.
The article mentions, “You will have to show that you will be completely self sufficient and have a very good reason for wanting to go
which will have little or no environmental impact, again you will have
to show exactly how you will do this.” If the tourist is not specific,
they will be denied permission to travel there. If anyone overstays his
or her allowed time in Antarctica, the person will be breaking the law.
Starting a new society in Antarctica is not currently possible. Perhaps
in the future, technology will allow humans to inhabit Antarctica.

“Kicking People to the Curb”
Presents Tough Choices
“Kicking people to the curb” is often the result of making a choice because someone
else’s negativity can bring you down. Sometimes you can just ignore it, and you will think
positively about yourself. Sometimes when you
feel that it is best not to keep the person as a
close friend, you try to “kick people to the
curb.” Sometimes you think this is a permanent decision, but a few days/weeks later, the
person ends up coming back—or you begin to
have doubts too. Being able to kick somebody
to the curb takes a lot of courage because
when that person is your best friend/family, it's
not as easy. A lot of times when you feel the
urge to do this is because you feel that they
are being hypocritical or that they have a lot of
negativity. A lot of people who get kicked to the
curb have the tendency to be "negative" by
thinking others are pathetic.
Although it is good to think about is who is
worth keeping in your life and who is worth
removing after either repeated smaller issues
or serious problems, part of many healthy relationships and growing up is being able to deal
with differences and work out minor arguments. Having realistic expectations helps.
Life has ups and downs. If someone says
something unkind, give time a chance to help
heal some wounds and handle maturely.
