We are half way through the year already! How time flies. But we have been lucky enough to have a wonderful spring with clear skies and unseasonably warm sunshine. This brought out the Spring flowers into their full glory and what a refreshing sight it made after the dull days of winter. As always the village was on top form when the GOSH event took place in April and a huge success it was thanks to organiser Rachael Denham whose tireless efforts for this charity raised a huge £5,000 for this worthy cause. Well done Rachael and friends. We now have our village drive sale to look forward to, the wonderful flower festivals that both our churches hold and of course all the regular activities that make this village the close community that we are all proud to be a part of. If you are planning an event, or have any interesting tales to tell, or anything you would like to see in the magazine please let me know. If you are a local artist or photographer and would like to offer pictures of our village for our next cover please -send them in!! Members of the public are invited to attend any of the above meetings ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------There has been an increasing problem with dog fouling in the parish, which is both unpleasant and a health hazard, particularly in areas where children play. "Dog Poo Fairy" posters were put up which, regrettably, have not deterred the offending and irresponsible dog owners and so the parish council will be initiating steps to have such owners prosecuted as this anti-social behaviour cannot be tolerated. From 27 May SHDC’s Environmental Health Dept will include a full time Dog Warden - Rachel Thompson. It is hoped to have an in-depth article giving her contact details etc. in the next issue of the parish magazine but, in the meantime, contact with SHDC’s Environmental Health Dept. should be via 01775 761161 or [email protected] . ============================================================================================== Renewable Energy from Wind – Some Information Sourced by Paul Hinks & Sandra North People have differing opinions about wind farms so maybe this is a good time to offer some facts to dispel some myths that surround the whole issue. With potentially massive financial returns, the wind turbine industry makes great use of misleading facts to convince us of the benefits, but investigate further and there are disturbing revelations. · Much of the big increase in our electricity bills is due to the subsidy paid to wind power · Wind power is intermittent by its nature; onshore turbines produce no more than 25% of their rated output over a year - it is not efficient · Gas fired power stations can quickly respond to these changes to supply/demand but must burn fuel to be on standby - greatly reducing their efficiency, so wind power is certainly not free! · As wind power development increases then more gas-fired power plants have to be built · Nuclear power stations consistently run at 95% output and provide the base loading, it needs a few thousand turbines to match one nuclear station · CO2 emissions from power generation have not fallen as wind power supply has increased · Wind power has actually reduced our energy security because we need more gas-fired power stations, wind power means we now need more imported gas than ever before. So after researching this information it appears that wind turbines may not be all that they are hyped up to be. The greatest casualties are the blighting of our landscape and the people living in close proximity to turbines – they suffer from constant rumbling noise, light flicker and an overbearing industrial machine in their view . Worst of all they do not seem to achieve what is promised as in reducing global warming. 2 Great Ormond Street Hospital Fund Raiser Massive thanks to those who bought tickets and came to the GOSH fundraiser/my birthday bash on Saturday 13th April. Since it’s inception in 1943 these courageous creatures, who have over the years saved the lives of thousands of men, have had their gallantry recognised with the Dickin Medal. The honour, introduced by the British veterinary charity PDSA, has also been nicknamed the animal Victoria Cross. It has been awarded to 27 dogs, 32 birds, three horses and one cat. G.I. Joe, Pigeon No USA 43 SC 6390 Date of award: August 1946 Joe helped save up to 1,000 lives during World War II by halting a planned American bombing on an Italian village held by British troops. In October 1943, the messenger bird flew 20 miles across enemy lines from a British HQ to a U.S. air base in just 20 minutes to deliver a warning note after radios failed. Joe arrived just as the planes were warming up to take off, said a former commander of the U.S. Army Pigeon Service. G.I. Joe’s note said the village of Calvi Vecchia, 25 miles north of Naples, had been abandoned by the Germans and the British 169th Infantry Brigade had occupied it. The U.S. had originally planned to use bombs to ‘soften up’ the village, which they believed was a German stronghold, before another British regiment launched a ground offensive. So, in the face of a breakdown in radio communication, hero Joe, a humble pigeon spared Allied soldiers and Calvi Vecchia’s residents from what could have been one of the worst incidents of ‘friendly fire’ during the war. G.I. Joe, who had been born that year in Algiers, was flown to the U.S. at the end of the war. But, in 1946, he crossed the Atlantic again so he could become one of the few foreign animals to be honoured with a Dickin Medal. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Roffes Catering (Lincs) Ltd - Butchery We bake bread, rolls, pies (meat & fruit) on a daily basis on site and produce BBQ Packs over the summer months. On August 4, 1998 Jo Ann Altsman of Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, had a heart attack in the bedroom of her vacation trailer at a Pennsylvania lake resort. Many say that pigs are smarter than dogs, and certainly Jo Ann would agree. After her collapse, her American Eskimo dog began to bark, but no one was close enough to respond. Lulu can't bark, but she did something much more daring. She scrambled through a tight "doggie door," cutting her protruding stomach in the process; then waited at the side of the road until she saw a car. She then waddled to the road and lay down right in front of the car. The motorist stopped for the prone pig and got out. LuLu then led the man to the house and the rescue. Miss Altsman heard a man shouting through her window that her pig was in distress. She managed to answer that in fact it was she who was in distress, and asked him to call an ambulance. Luckily help arrived in time: doctors said that if 15 more minutes had elapsed she likely would have died. The intrepid feline, who sadly died in British quarantine before he could receive the honour, was praised for his courage and support during the 1949 Yangtze Incident. Seventeen sailors were killed during the standoff after HMS Amethyst sailed up the Yangtze river from Shanghai to Nanking to protect the British embassy there during China’s civil war. Simon suffered severe shrapnel wounds and burns after the captain’s cabin was hit by a shell, which killed Lieutenant Commander Bernard M. Skinner. Yet somehow the scraggly black and white cat who was discovered stray in Hong Kong, fought through the pain and was able to recover from his injuries by licking his wounds. According to the citation he received for his Amethyst campaign ribbon, Simon, who was also given the rank able seaman, rid the ship “of pestilence and vermin with unrelenting faithfulness”. This task became particularly important because the men were strictly rationed during the long, hot months aboard. He was best known for killing a notorious and intrepid rat the sailors nicknamed Mao Tse Tung after the Communist leader. Simon and the rest of the crew made a daring escape as the Amethyst limped back down the river under the cover of darkness. Sadly, he died from an infection after arriving in British quarantine. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Rose Tree Farm Shop 132 Chapelgate Tel:- 01945 440228 Fresh home grown and locally produced Fruit and Veg Open Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday - 9am – 5.30pm Tuesday - Closed Saturday 8.30am – 5pm Sunday 9am – 12pm Also pet foods, bird food, coal, logs, haylage and hay Shop locally and save fuel. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Your One Stop Equine Shop Saddles & Tack : Saddle Fitting & Saddlery Repairs Bespoke & Made to Measure Leatherwork Rugs: Bits : Horse Equipment - Feed & Supplements : Mens, Womens & Childrens Clothing. 100’s of Brands to Choose From. The main problems seem to be thefts of heating oil from storage tanks. To help prevent this there are one or two ways to make things safer - or at least more difficult for thieves to access. Maybe have a wall built in front of the tank to make it less on view from the road , or small ‘shed’ with a lock surrounding the tank that would cost a few pounds to build but could save you a lot more in the long run - not to mention being cold in winter when your oil has been stolen. 7 Dickin Meal Winner Judy, English Pointer, Gloergoer camp at Medan, Indonesia 1942-1945 Judy the English pointer who became the only official canine POW of the WW11. Navy dog Judy earned her Dickin Medal after suffering harsh Japanese treatment as the only official canine prisoner of war during World War II. The English Pointer, prisoner No 81A, also helped save the crew of gunboat HMS Grasshopper by finding water after the stricken boat was marooned on an Indonesian island in 1942. Japanese soldiers, who had conquered the country, eventually captured the men – who took Judy with them into Gloergoer PoW camp in Medan. Brutal guards regularly beat her and threatened to kill her. But she bought her life by providing the camp commandant with puppies. Judy helped raise morale among the men and, in particular, struck up a touching friendship with Leading Airfcraftman Frank Williams. He smuggled her aboard a Japanese prisoner transport ship, which was torpedoed and sank en route to Singapore in 1944. She was able to swim to safety – saving men as she did by providing debris to keep them afloat - and after a few days was reunited with Frank at another PoW camp. When the war ended in 1945, Judy, who was born in Shanghai in 1937, was taken to Britain and a year later she was awarded the Dickin Medal on May 2nd 1946. She died from a tumour aged 13 in 1950, two years after beginning a new adventure with Frank in east Africa. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jeanette’s Hair Salon 53 Chapelgate - Sutton St James. The online journal Animal People, in 1996 charted 11 cases of dogs alerting humans to fires or other imminent life-threatening disasters, and five cats doing the same. Susie, an ginger tabby from Oklahoma City alerted her 100-year-old owner Lois Gillis Hall to a smouldering fire one evening in May 1998. Lois had just gone to sleep and awoke to a shrill screech. As she opened her eyes she saw Susie sitting hunched beside her, fur on end, yowling furiously. Susie then pounced on Lois’s chest, swiping her with the soft pad of her paw, which Gillis assumed was Susie's way of telling her that she wanted to go out, so she led her downstairs and out the door. Susie bolted back in, meowing more desperately than before, as if to tell Lois something. As Lois turned, she saw that the house was burning. A fire had started in an electric blanket which had burned a hole in her mattress. Just a few more minutes and the bed would have burst into flames with her in it. Afghanistan : October 2012 Army sniffer dog Theo was posthumously awarded the Dickin Medal for his lifesaving bravery that saw him uncover a record number of bombs and weapons. Tragically, the 22-month-old springer spaniel cross suffered a fatal seizure hours after his handler, Lance Corporal Liam Tasker, 26, was shot dead by the Taliban in 2011. The pair made 14 discoveries in five months on the front line and have been hailed by military chiefs for saving the lives of countless British soldiers in Afghanistan. Theo was said to have died of a broken heart after Lance Corporal Tasker was killed taking part in a mission in the Nahr-e-Saraj district in Helmand. Their role had been to help search and clear roads and compounds, uncover hidden weapons, improvised explosive devices and bomb-making equipment. The soldiers used to joke that Theo was impossible to restrain but would say the same about Lance Corporal Tasker, revealed Major Alexander Turner, who at the time was the commanding officer No 2 Company 1st Battallion Irish Guards. “At the most hazardous phase of an advance, he would be at the point of a spear, badgering to get even further and work his dog.’ Sutton St James Preschool Playgroup We are open Monday and Friday 9 - 12 and Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 9 - 3 For further details contact :- Caron Bishop 01945 440000 9 Animal Heroes - Lifesaving Swans One January morning in 2005 the water of an American lake had frozen solid and a woman noticed a large Canada goose, very still, with its wings folded tight to its sides, its feet frozen to the ice. Then in the sky she saw a line of swans flying in. The leader swung round and the string of birds spiralled down and landed on the ice close to the stranded goose. Swans and geese are often competitors, but the swans surrounded the frozen goose, their bills working on the ice. For a long time they pecked at the ice. At last, the goose was rimmed by a narrow margin of ice and after a short struggle was able to pull away, and was free and standing on the ice moving his big webbed feet slowly. The swans stood watching. Then, four of the swans moved around him, and their powerful beaks scraped the goose's wings from top to bottom, chipping off and melting the ice held within the feathers. Slowly, as if testing his strength, the goose spread his wings as far as they would go, then together again, accordion-like, and spread again. When at last his wings reached their fullest, the four swans took off and resumed their journey east, in perfect formation. After a moment the goose moved into the sky and followed behind. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Simply Clean - Window Cleaning Professional Window Cleaner - Quality & Reliable Service Competitive Prices 1 and 2 Bed Bungalow or Terrace from £6 : 3 Bed Semi from £8 : 4 bed Detached from £12 Contact Tel- 01775 888 466 - Mobile 07587 024 455Email : [email protected] - www.simplycleanuk.com -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Dickin Medal for Three Horses of the London Blitz : Date of award: April 1947 Despite horses suffering huge casualties during historic conflicts – eight million died in the First World War alone – only three have been awarded the Dickins Medal. Perhaps this is because, despite being trained to be steadfast in the face of crowds, they can be notoriously nervous, often whinnying at the slightest loud noise. So it is all the more impressive that a trio of Metropolitian Police horses should earn their stripes during the Blitz. Among them, Olga initially bolted 100 yards when a German V1 flying bomb destroyed four houses in Tooting, south-west London in July 1944. But she returned with her rider PC J. E. Thwaites to the scene and helped control crowds who wanted to see the landing site of the unusual ‘Doodle Bug’. A month later, another V1 hit the East End district of Bethnal Green. Upstart, whose stables had already been destroyed, held fast and assisted his handler DI J. Morley with the rescue effort despite the animal being showered with debris. Regal, the third horse, was unlucky because his stables in leafier Muswell Hill, north London, were twice burned down by incendiary bombs in April 1941 and July 1944. But the easy-going equine once again lived up to his name and was ‘not duly perturbed,’ according to one witness. All three working horses received their awards together in London’s Hyde Park in April 1947. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sutton St James Community Primary School - Bells Drove : Sutton St James : PE12 0JG www.sutton-st-james.lincs.sch.uk Tel- 01945 440 209 Emai :- [email protected] Learning is Fun! - Come and see what we have to offer!
