BELGIAN LACES
Dear Members,
Well I think we are now in the clear. At least
I sure hope so! It has been a very busy year
for us at home. Our family is growing. We
are living and enjoying the present while
leaving our own trail of clues for future
researchers at the same time.
I find the process fascinating.
Things have not stood still for TBR either
although our membership numbers are
dwindling.
With all that Chuck and David and Guy and
Elaine and others are contributing to improve
our Rootsweb page at
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~inbr/inde
x.html we are helping more and more
researchers with free access to more
information. The work is never done so we
would welcome more participation if you feel
so inclined.
I also hope we have repaired our status with
the IRS. I received a letter today suggesting
it was time I file the E-postcard 990-N, which
I duly did. I am not sure whether this means
all is taken care of. I would rather get a letter
telling me it is for sure but I take this as a
good sign anyway. Let’s see what comes
next.
This issue is varied again as we try to include
something for all the groups of Belgian
descendants. This is not as complete as what
you will find online though so we invite
everyone again to visit our page.
Contact us if there are topics you would like
developed. We love hearing from you!

Volunteers lay Belgian flowers to create
a giant carpet inspired by Africa.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-19274957
http://www.flowercarpet.be/flower-carpet-2012/
On August 14, 2012, volunteers worked on the Grand-Place in
Brussels, to fill in the design of a gigantic carpet with some 2000 m2
of begonias in the colors of African fabrics. About 600,000 begonias
(300 flowers per square meter) were brought on Brussels’famous
Grand-Place where the 120 volunteers spent almost four hours
creating the ephemeral carpet.
This year the carpet was created using designs from traditional
patterns from Ethiopia, the Congo, Nigeria, Cameroon and
Botswana.
Inventive and talented landscape architect E. Stautemans had been
experimenting since the 50s with using begonias to create small rugs
in different parts of Flanders. He came to realize that floral carpets
would be an excellent vehicle for the promotion of his beloved
begonias with which he had always worked. That is how the Brussels
Flower Carpet was born. The event takes place every two years.
"The design is very complicated this year because it is very
sophisticated," one of the organizers, Annette Katz, told Reuters.
The carpet was on display August 15 thru August 19.
Watch this video that shows you how it came to be a reality for a few
hours.

Belgian Laces Vol#34‐133 Belgians in Michigan (Discovering the Peoples of
Michigan) (Paperback)
by Bernard A. Cook
At the beginning of the twenty-first century, Michigan was home to the secondlargest Belgian population in the United States, and Detroit had one of the largest
Belgian populations in the nation. Although immigration declined after World War
I, the Belgian-American community is still prominent in the state. Political,
religious, and economic conditions, including a nineteenth- century economic
depression, helped motivate the move to America. Belgians brought with them the
ability and willingness to innovate, as well as a tradition of hard work and
devotion. The Gazette van Detroit, a Flemish-language newspaper first printed in
Detroit in 1914, continues to be produced and distributed to subscribers throughout
the United States and overseas. Belgian-Americans continue to incorporate
traditional values with newfound American values, enabling them to forever
preserve their heritage.

John William Weiland and Catherine Roob Descendants
By Michelle WEILAND - [email protected]
This book lists information about the descendants of John William
Weiland and Catherine Roob, immigrants from Bertrange,
Luxembourg to Ozaukee County, Wisconsin in the mid-1800s.
“A flood of immigrants surged to the United States from Luxembourg
and the rest of Europe in the 19th century. John and farmers like him
felt they had no future in a country where the population was
growing as the size of their farms was dwindling. Poor harvests only
contributed to the urge to search for a brighter future. At the same
time, there was a perception that America was a sort of paradise,
where there were opportunities for social advancement, land
ownership and political freedom.”

For more than 300 years Philadelphia has been a great port city and a major center for international commerce. Only a few short years after William Penn's
vessel "The Welcome" landed on the shores of the Delaware River, heralding the establishment of Penn's "City of Neighborhoods", Philadelphia became
the New World's leading center for trade and commerce, a title it held for more than a hundred years. For most of its early history, the Port of Philadelphia
thrived and expanded without major guidance from a central governing authority or organization. Rather, disparate private concerns built and maintained
piers and waterfront warehouses, moving a wide variety of goods through those facilities. It was during these initial years that all manner of cargoes arrived
or departed via the city’s docks, establishing the Port’s reputation for the fast, expert handling of any cargo imaginable and its central role in the economic
health of the city and region. Eventually, city government took a more active hand in the organization of the waterfront, and municipally owned piers and
warehouses sprang up amidst the privately owned facilities. Sadly, all of the municipal piers and warehouses of the 18th and 19th centuries are now long
gone, though several piers from the early 20th century- recognizable by their ornate facades- still dot the waterfront, with some still actively handling cargo
next to their more modern counterparts. For most of the early years of the 20th century, the Philadelphia waterfront was overseen and managed by a
municipal agency known as the Department of Wharves, Docks, and Ferries, a division of the City of Philadelphia’s Department of Commerce. The
Department of Wharves, Docks, and Ferries oversaw the construction and maintenance of municipally owned piers and port facilities, and also had some
regulatory power for the overall Philadelphia waterfront. - http://www.philaport.com/history.htm

Belgian Laces Vol#34‐133 The Old Soldiers Homes
By Guy Gallez
The National Asylum for disabled Civil War volunteers was established by Congress in 1865, and was renamed the National Home
for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers in 1873. (It became known as the National Military Home, and colloquially as the Old Soldiers
Home.) It was originally funded by various fines and by pensions, but in 1875 Congress began appropriating money directly for it.
Requirements for admission were that soldiers had been honorably discharged from military service and that they had contracted their
disabilities during the war. Men admitted themselves to the home voluntarily and could request a discharge. The homes were run in a
military fashion: men wore uniforms and were assigned to companies; bugles and cannons signaled daily schedules. The homes
provided schools, churches, hospitals, and gardens thought to be therapeutic for the veterans. In 1930, President Hoover combined the
National Home and the Veterans Bureau (created after World War I) into the Veterans Administration.
A record of veterans admitted to the homes as members is contained in “Historical Registers” that were maintained at the various
branches. A home number was assigned to each individual upon admission. The member retained his original number even if he was
discharged and was later readmitted to the branch. Each page of the register is divided into four sections as follows: military history,
domestic history, home history, and general remarks.
- The veteran’s military history gives the time and place of each enlistment, rank, company, regiment, time and place of discharge,
reason for discharge, and nature of disabilities when admitted to the home.
- The domestic history provides information about the veteran such as: birthplace, age, height, various physical features, religion,
occupation, residence, marital status, and name and address of nearest relative.
- The home history provides the rate of pension, date or dates of admission, conditions of readmission, date of discharge, cause of
discharge, date and cause of death, and place of burial. Entered under general remarks is information about papers relating to the
veteran, such as admission papers, Army discharge certificate, and pension certificate. Information was also entered concerning
money and personal effects if the member died while in residence at the branch.
Eleven homes were opened before 1930 and other followed:
 Eastern Branch, in Togus, Maine (1866)
 Northwestern Branch, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin (1867)
 Central Branch, in Dayton, Ohio (1867)
 Southern Branch, in Hampton, Virginia (1870)
 Western Branch, in Leavenworth, Kansas (1885)
 Pacific Branch, in Santa Monica (LA), California (1888)
 Marion Branch, in Marion, Indiana (1888)
 Danville Branch, in Danville, Illinois (1898)
 Mountain Branch, in Johnson City, Tennessee (1901)
 Battle Mountain Sanatorium, in Hot Springs, South Dakota
(1902)
 Bath Branch (formerly the New York State Soldier & Sailor Home),
in Bath, New York (1929)
 Roseburg Branch, Roseburg, Oregon
Other “old soldier homes” were run by individual states1.
43 states operated 55 homes between 1865 and 1933 for military veterans, or their widows, or orphans.
Fourteen of those states also had a federal veterans home open at the same time as their state veterans home.
Eleven states had two or more state veterans homes in operation at the same time (two of which states also had a federal home).
REQUIREMENTS FOR ADMISSION
When a volunteer soldier desires admission he may apply by letter to either of the
managers, whereupon blank applications will be sent to the applicant, and if duly
qualified, transportation will be furnished, or he can apply personally or by letter at the
branch nearest his place of residence.
The requirements are as follows:
1. An honorable discharge from the volunteer service.
2. Disability by wounds received, or sickness contracted in the line of duty.
3. A soldier entitled to or having a pension must forward with his application for
admission his discharge papers and pension certificate, or receipt therefore, or both, as
the case may be, before his application is granted, which papers will be retained at the
branch to which the applicant is admitted, to be kept there on file and returned to him
when he is discharged.

Belgian Laces Vol#34‐133 Eastern Branch, in Togus Maine (1866)
By Guy Gallez
The Eastern Branch, in Togus (Chelsea) Maine2 was the first of
the National Homes to open in November 1866.
The Togus property was originally a summer resort known as
Togus Springs. It was owned and operated by Horace Beals, a
wealthy granite merchant from Rockland, Maine who hoped to
establish a second "Saratoga Springs" type resort. He spent more
than $250,000 on a hotel, stables, bowling alley, farmhouse,
bathing house, race track and driveways. The resort opened in
1859 but failed during the Civil War and closed in 1863. Beals
died shortly after this business failure and the government bought
the land and buildings for $50,000.
The first veteran was admitted to Togus on November 10, 1866.
The veteran population of the home remained under 400 until a
building program began in 1868 which provided housing 3,000
veterans. The home was organized much like a military camp with
the men living in barracks and wearing modified Army uniforms.
Although a 100 bed hospital was completed in 1870, medical care at the home was limited, even by the standards of the day. In 1890,
a narrow gauge railroad from the Kennebec River in Randolph and an electric trolley line from Augusta were completed and Togus
became a popular excursion spot for Sunday picnics. There were frequent band concerts, a zoo, a hotel and a theater which brought
shows directly from Broadway. The National Cemetery is the final resting place for 5,373 veterans from the War of 1812 through the
Korean War. It was first opened in 1867 and was closed to new burials in 1961.

Belgian Laces Vol#34‐133 John Renier4 1st Maine Cavalry; Sailor; age 21; born Belgium; residence Madison; enlisted
and mustered January 5, 1864, Augusta; joined co. January 29, 1864; severely wounded and
prisoner at Dinwiddie, March 31, 1865; surrendered by the enemy, April 10; discharged G. O.
N° 77.
He was born in Antwerp, Belgium, April 3, 1845, of French and Dutch ancestry. He came to
the United States in 1859 to study the English language. Toward the end of the Civil War he
became interested in the cause of the Northern Forces and on January 5, 1864 he enlisted in the
Northern Army. He was seriously wounded at the Battle of Five Forks, Virginia, and was
hospitalized for eight months. He received a gun shot wound through the body below side
resulting in the paralysis of right leg, below knee. After his recovery he was obliged to use
crutches for the rest of his life.
He was discharged from the army on October 21, 1865 and became a United States Citizen
August 7, 1868. He went to Madison, Maine, due to the urging off an army friend named N. A.
Weston. He settled and married in Madison Mahala Eames, born March 20, 1848 and had six
children: Jennie Mari, born Nov. 20, 1871; Stanly P. born June 3, 1873; Angie Victoria, born
Oct. 3, 1877; Percy Leon born May 20, 1883; Marty Moore born April 22, 1885; Rosalie
Berdena born May 16, 1892.
He ran a grocery store and the Madison Post Office for several years and later owned and
operated a very successful farm in Madison. He could speak four different languages. Never
returned to Europe. His death occured at Madison on May 24, 1906 at the age of 62 y. and 7 m. from traumatic meningitis, his widow
surviving him till after 1940.
Fidèle Ballion from Belgium, on board ship "Peter Godfrey" 30th Massachusetts Infantry5; Comp. K; age 29; laborer; enlisted and
mustered Sept 17, 1864; wounded Oct. 19, 1864, Cedar Creek, VA; discharged for disability, June 20, 1865, Philadelphia, PA. He
was admitted in the National Home for Disabled Volunteers in Togus, Maine on April 22, 1871, lame and partially demented
following a gun shot wound in head received in the Shenandoah, Virginia on May 15, 1871(sic). He “deliberately deserted” on May
12, 1871. He indicated as relative a Mr. Frances, nr 10 Institute Avenue, Boston. No other information.
Arnold J Timmermans 15th Maine Infantry ; enlisted November 9, 1861; discharged March 27, 1862; reenlisted July 17, 1863
Unassigned Veteran Reserve Corps(?); discharged July 16, 1865. Born November 18, 1817 in Belgium. Arrival in New York on
board Sea Eagle June 14, 1854. A painter by trade, he settled first in Calais, Washington County, Maine and married Elvira Stimmen,
born New Brunswick and widow of Robert Bonus (or Bowle). He enlisted at the organization of his Unit at Augusta on December 30,
1861 but, during the Winter fell on the ice during Battalion drill. A large hernia developed on the right side rendering him unfit for
military service and filled a pension claim as soon as June 1863.
In the rosters of the 15th Maine, Timmerman is acknowledged as Joseph A or Arnold J. In the Unit story6 he is listed as Joseph A.
Timmermans, having "died in the service" in 1862. For that winter of 1862 the historian of the Regiment write "as a more painful
incident of the winter's stay at Augusta must be mentioned the fact that the exposure to which the soldiers were subjected in camp
during the winter, quite seriously affected the general health of the command, and rendered "the sick-list" both in camp and in
quarters, quite formidable. Many contracted violent colds, resulting in lung difficulties and other ailments, from which they never
recovered. Not a few died at Augusta during the winter or early spring months, while many others, completely broken down in health,
and unable to accompany the regiment, were left behind, in hospital or at their homes, and were finally discharged from the service for
disability, or, unaccounted for, were dropped from the rolls in pursuance of general order".
After the War, Arnold Timmermans moved to Portland, Maine. If in his naturalization papers filled in September 9, 1868, he stated
being born in Belgium, in the 1870 and 1880 censuses, he stated being born in France. In the 1880 census he
listed his father as being born in France and his mother being born in Belgium. His wife already had 5 children
from her former marriage but a girl Ella M. was born to them about 1860. The death of Arnold Timmermans
occurred in 1886, his wife surviving him till after 1900.

discharge, suffering of a gunshot wound in left eye destroying sight of that eye and impairing right by
“sympathetic” inflammation so that he had little use of it, following the information given when entering the
National Home for Disabled Volunteers in 1869, Togus, Maine. His last entry was for 1873.
Jules Guissart 62nd New York Infantry (Anderson Zouaves); age
28; enlisted May 7, 1861 at New York city to serve 3 years;

for disability (hernia), September 14, 1863 at New York city.
Find a Grave
Unlike many American Civil War regiments, the 62nd NYSV does
not have a known existent regimental history. Historically, Company “I” was largely
composed of men who had left Le Gal’s Gardes Lafayette (55th NY) in disgust at the slow
pace at which that regiment was being prepared for the war. About fifty soldiers of the
Gardes Lafayette joined Riker’s regiment in May 1861 bringing with them their distinctive French Zouave uniform. Initially known as
Company “Z” they eventually became known as Company “I”. Nevertheless there is no trace of Jules Guissart in the Gardes
Lafayette.
Traces of Jules Guissart are rather scarce. His naturalization occurring in October 27, 1865 gives his address as 52 Forsyth Street,
new York (Manhattan) and occupation as clerk. No arrival in the Stateds and birth date given. In the 1870 census for New York, I find
a Jules Goisard, 38 y. o., a machinist born France with wife Margareth, no children. He was admitted in the Home in 1895 as a
widower, occupation peddler, age 66. He died July 29, 1915. No relative mentioned and his effects were sold at auction one year later.
He is buried in the home cemetery Section K Row 4 # 3352.
Jacob Verstrappen residence Boothbay, 11th Maine Co. D; enlisted as a Private, December 29, 1864; age
30; substitute; discharged for wounds on 2 Jul. 1865 ( A second entry says: 1st Maine Veteran Volunteers;
Co. H; enlisted as a Private, Dec. 29, 1864; age 30; substitute; discharged 26 Sept. 1865 )
He was wounded in July 1865 at Pittsburg Landing. He filed an application for pension on December 20,
1865. A plasterer in Portland, Maine about 1890. When entering the Soldier’s Home in 1897 he stated as his
nearest relative William J Verstrappen, Belgium. In the 1900 census he state being a US pensioner, born
France May 1848 from French parents. Divorced. Living in Alfred with his step-son George Bracey and his
daughter Lizzie. In September 21, 1906 he was naturalized. His death occurred on May 1, 1925 after 15 years
as inmate of the Home. He is buried in the Togus National Cemetery Section L Site 4037.

on ship David arriving to Portland, Maine with other Belgians on board. Twenty of the passengers, in a
group, are referenced as “artizan” from “Germany”. They surely were all bound to enlist in the Northern Army as I was able to
connect some of them, eight of them precisely, with the 11th Maine and 19th Massachusetts Infantry. No trace of the other twelve men.
Here the ship manifest and corresponding enlistments, as far as I’m able to decipher the names and as far I was able to find
information for them:
Joseph Domes 11th Maine Infantry Co. K, from “Belgium”, enlisted 22 December 1864,
mustered out (deserted at Richmond?) August 4, 1865, settled in Argo, Missouri, after the War
Joseph Vandenbosch, 11th Maine Infantry Co. D, enlisted 29 December 1864, mustered out 2
February 1866
Jacob Verstallen/Verstrappen 11th Maine Infantry Co. D, enlisted 29 December 1864,
discharged for wounds, 2 July 1865
Leopold Augustin/Augustine Leopold 11th Maine Infantry Co. B from “Boothbay”, enlisted 22
December, 1864. His pension file says it was an alias. True name: Joseph L. Hanefstengels. He
asked for a pension on April 9, 1912, the file was filled in Belgium.
Leopold Jackman 19th Massachusetts Infantry Co. B, from “Belgium”, enlisted 27 December
1864, mustered out 21 July 1865 (325,00$ bounty)
Henri Mealmans 19th Massachusetts Infantry Co. B, from “Holland” enlisted 27 December
1864, mustered out 30 June 1865 (325.00$ bounty)
Martin Cobe 11th Maine Infantry Co. K, from “Belgium”(or Boothbay, Maine), enlisted 22
December 1864, died of disease on April 7, 1865 on Steamer Thos. Powell

Adelaide Balza Given Party On Ninth Birthday Adelaide Balza, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Morris Balza, celebrated her ninth birthday anniversary last Thursday February 13, and was honor guest at a party given in the home of her uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Rene Balza, 1014 Meadow Avenue. Party hours were from 5:30 to 8:00 o’clock and feature of the refreshments was a large birthday cake, decorated with pink and white frosting and nine lighted candles. Serving refreshments to the children were the honor guest’s mother and her aunt. Favors were little red baskets filled with Valentine candies. Children entertained at the party were: Beverly Balza, Earl Biagini, Jean Rench, Louis Moss, Jean Pomganio, Norman Biagini, Joyce Freeman, Norman Mino, Eugene Pompanio, Mary Louise Houston, Arlene Magello, Arlena Dury, Rosemary Marchinetti, Louis Rialti, Emma Jane Bahala, Leonard Libengood, Denna Stanley, Garner Polacci and Nancy Rush. The Charleroi Mail, Charleroi, PA – 20 Feb 1941 Looking Down the Years: 25 Years Ago Today Feb 7, 1920 Mrs. Jennie Balza, 1002 Crest Avenue, dies in Monongahela Hospital ‐ The Charleroi Mail, Charleroi, PA – 7 Feb 1945 Posthumous Award of Two Medals To Pfc Maurice Balza The award and presentation of the Silver Star and Bronze Star Medals, posthumously, to Maurice Balza, of 1012 Meadow avenue, Charleroi, for his son, Private First Class Raymond M Balza, was announced today by Col. Lucius McK Crumrine, commanding officer, Pittsburgh Sub‐District. Third Service Command. According to the citation with the Silver Star Medal award, Pfc Balza, a member of the Airborne Infantry on February 13, 1945, with utter disregard for his personal safety, moved his machine gun to an exposed position from which he poured a deadly fire into the attacking enemy. Although the target of intense enemy fire, he remained forward and continued to fire on the enemy until the attack was repulsed. “In the performance of this heroic deed, this intrepid soldier was mortally wounded. The daring courage and zealous devotion to duty displayed by Private First Class Balza set an inspiring example for his unit and exemplify the highest traditions of the United States Army.” The award of the Bronze Star Medal was won earlier for heroic achievement in connection with military operations against the enemy, December 15, 1944. When an assistant gunner in a machine gun squad was wounded, according to the citation, Balza, an ammunition bearer, completely disregarding his own safety, crawled over difficult, fire‐swept terrain to substitute for his fellow soldier. Despite fierce enemy counter‐attacks, he remained with the gun; his accurate fire destroyed two enemy machine guns and contributed materially to the successful defense of the position. The Charleroi Mail, Charleroi, PA – 18 July 1945 Pfc Raymond M Balza was killed in action in the Pacific theater
Herman Balza’s obituary - found in The Charleroi Mail, 25 April 1946 – is unreadable

Belgian Laces Vol#34‐133 La Balle Pelote (Pelota Ball)10
Information provided by André Bodart,
Etienne Hercot and Jean-Marie Geradon
Pelota ball, a major component of the associative life
of some of our regions, is paradoxically poorly
known to the public.
Origins
Like other games played in Western Europe, the
game of Pelota ball is one of the most direct
descendants of the "tennis court" whose
etymological meaning of "ball game" goes back to
antiquity.
The origins of the game of tennis are mysterious.
The first mention of this game in Hainaut date from
the first half of the 14th century, but it was the
soldiers of Charles V who really introduced in our
regions.
http://users.swing.be/sw123868/images/waterloopetit.jpg
The game also runs into the Flemish region with
Bruges as its capital.
On August 15th, 1628, a first contest, with prizes, was held in Oudenburg for the surrounding communities.
On a technical level, during the 17th century, players begin to use a glove, also called pan, in order to protect the hand. A propulsion
instrument is also adopted so as to achieve a longer throw range.
The 18th century saw the game gradually abandoned in Flanders. “Racquet ball” was more popular in Tournai and Brussels. The
regions of Ath, Walloon Brabant, Namur and Charleroi, will follow suit, each with its peculiarities of play.
In 1813, Spanish prisoners held at the Saint-Jean barracks in Tournai, often engaged in the game of “big ball”. This gave the
magistrate the idea of abandoning “racquet ball” in favor of this new game called "Pelota ball".
In 1950’s Belgium, “Pelota ball” would finally replace various games such as "balle au tamis” (small sieve ball, where the screen is
made of a 40cm diameter iron circle to which is attached expandable hair) or "demi
dure"(half hard: in between the small “balle au tamis” and pelota ball, without the
screen but with a bigger ball)
The Field
The field is made of
two unequal parts. The
"big game" is a
trapezoid whose long
side measures 19m and
the short side (the
cord) 7m, and a height
of 30m. The “small
game”,
which
continues the trapezoid
is more rectangular,
with a length of 42m.
The field is usually the

local public square.
The
cord,
which
separates the two fields, can not be crossed once the ball has been served.
Uniforms
Wearing shorts is allowed for youth. Wearing pants is needed for protection for the
adult players who sometimes throw themselves on the ground to stop a ball. Wearing
a hat is authorized as well as a belt to protect the kidneys. The athletic shoes used are
often padded.

Belgian Laces Vol#34‐133 The Ball
Originally composed of various elements covered with skin (48 mm in diameter and
weighing 45 g), the ball went through many changes,
until 1975 when the synthetic ball as we know it was
adopted. After several trials, the ball found its final
form and composition (53mm and 50g).
The original ball was white but a yellow version made
its appearance in 1980, allowing better visibility against
the gray and in the context of any television coverage.

contention in the '70s and the '80s.
n_23&hash=item43ae19fc16
The Pelota ball glove is originally a single hand glove to protect the hand. In the early days
players used a woolen glove, or just practiced with bare hands. The use of a fine leather glove, reinforced with a plate to protect the
palm, started in 1910.
In 1980, the Federation began to require a seal of approval on the
gloves to ensure they conform to regulations.
Players
A team consists of five players, namely:
- The livreur (server)
- L’Homme de fond or foncier (man in the Back)
- The contre-rechasseur (counter-chaser)
- The two cordiers (two corders)
Rules
The point of the game is to earn or prepare to earn points by
releasing the ball, often the farthest possible in the opponent’s field.
The ball should be hit back or with one bounce within the field. A
team may not touch the ball twice in a row. The team in the “big
1927 Ligny, Belgium - Pelota Ball team
field” serves until two chases have been given. The server is
courtesy of André Bodart
replaced at the beginning of a new game. Every player will have
served after 5 games. The ball is served bare hand. When served the ball must with bounce once in the small field or beyond the back
line by two “perches”.
A team immediately earns 15 if the ball is hit beyond the back line (“ligne des outre”). A team gives up 15 if the ball is hit without the
lateral lines without first bouncing in the field. A team also gives up 15 (Shouted out “quinze!”) if the serving ball touches one of its
players or if the balls bounces into any part of a player’s body besides the hand or the forearm. The rules are obviously more
complicated than we have time to address here, so let’s just say that, like in tennis, points are added as follows: 15, 30, 40 and game,
except that the advantage after 40 or over equality does not exist in Pelota ball. In the league, the team that reaches 15 games first
wins the game.
Sociocultural impact
Pelota Ball games fulfill several functions.
1.
Sports: Most players are solely amateurs, but there are real professionals.
2.
Entertainment: especially the case for amateurs.
3.
Socialization: the primary function of this game like any sport is socialization. Pelota
Ball teams do not limit their interaction to sports events; they also take part in festive events
just for fun.
The Pelota ball game was first played on the street, which is indicative of its role in social
integration. The locale is very important in the life of a ball team, as a meeting place of choice
for amateur players.
Evolution
http://users.swing.be/sw123868/im
Since the '80s, we are seeing a real decline in the practice of Pelota ball.
ages/cafe.gif
Why?
- In a world where change is slow, this discipline is seen as the classic expression of the sporting life of the community. On the
94
Belgian Laces Vol#34‐133 contrary, when the pace of change is faster, where innovations are more numerous, the standards of yesterday quickly become
obsolete.
- The Pelota ball game suffers from many other competing activities, the least of which is not soccer. In the international scope of
things, there is a wider media coverage, which does not include this game which is too localized.
- The areas designated as play areas in the streets disappeared as traffic increased in the '50s, which would require the development
ballodrome sites, and in turn impact the social integration of the game.
- the development of the automobile played a big part in the erosion of the practice of Pelota ball, as it enabled people to engage in
new leisure activities. This could bring down Pelota ball altogether.
Today
Today, Pelota ball is still very present in Belgium, with championships (3 national, 3 regional, and 1
promotional) from May to August. There is even a European Championship as well as a World
Championship.
In 2011 the first "Champions' League" was organized, whose finals were held in late September in Spain.
Paradoxically, this traditional sport seems to belong more in the Past.
However, as the public's taste for heritage grows, Pelota ball seems to generate more interest. Indeed, many
exhibitions about this sport are organized. Hopefully this new momentum will pull Pelota ball from the
oblivion into which it has gradually fallen.
The Big names of the game
We can not mention all the great names of this sport, but here are a few:
- Leon Cassaert of Gosselie, considered the greatest player of all time.
- Benjamin Docquier playing in Kersken
- Patrick Ridiaux from Courcelles
- Cédric Bosse from Cour sur Heure
We invite you to have a look to the "block of Pelota ball amateurs": http://acozcoquis.skynetblogs.be/
You can also get a better idea of the game by watching this YouTube video:

We were so far unable to see if the Belgian emigrants continued to play the game after settling in the United States but it is evident
some players brought their glove and ball with them as is witnessed by the glove and ball Vicki Zabeau Bowden found among the
precious treasures left behind by her family members. We ventured a guess that baseball became a priority over the Belgian Ball
game for most emigrants and further study on this would show many of them played baseball very well.
André Bodart located an Ebay auction where a glove was being sold so there are still memorabilia from the early era of the Balle
Pelote. The YouTube videos show there may be a revivalist movement

Belgian Laces Vol#34‐133 The false account of a false Belgian of the Custer Massacre.
By Guy Gallez
In November 1929, some newspapers related a testimony of a Belgian living in Geneva, Ohio relating how he found the corpse of
General George Armstrong Custer just after the battle of the Little Big Horn between the US Army and the Indians.
Touching Story Of Custer Massacre
General George A. Custer, killed in the massacre of the Little Big Horn during the Civil War, was recently divulged by Phillip
Wanger, 84, Indian fighter and courier, now a farmer living near here.
Because the message Wanger had been entrusted to deliver to Custer arrived too late to be read by the famous leader, the aged
courier never cared to discuss his perilous ride through Indian country and the spectacle that dimmed his then youthful eyes
termination of the ride.
Born in Belgium in 1845, Wanger was an infantryman assigned Company K of the Second United States Infantry. His five years of
service was spent for the most part in the saddle. He was bugler and orderly to Capt. Sam McKeever of the Second.
On June 25, 1876, Custer was hard pressed. His supporting columns had failed him. A number of couriers were sent out for aid, but
history records that only one other man besides Wanger, a member of a cavalry outfit, was able to break through the Indian lines.
When Wanger had completed his long ride from Powder Creek Valley to the place where Custer had fallen with his regiment in the
rocky territory of Little Big Horn. He found Custer on the ground, face down. A pile of shells from his rifle and a brace of pistols were
beside him.
Custer, the hero of the Civil War and innumerable Indian fights had been dead for more than an hour. He had been shot more than
twenty times. Nearly all of the soldiers about him had been scalped by the savages.
Custer had not been scalped. Wanger related that he learned later from friendly Indians that even among the ranks of the savages
Custer had been respected and that "he was too big a
chief" to suffer such ignominy. Wanger declares he
never learned the contents of the message he was to
deliver to Custer.
He returned it to his commander after he had helped to
bury the dead general and his ill-fated followers. In the
furor that followed Wanger said the Message was lost
at general headquarters.
Wanger readily admitted he did not join the army in
1875 to be an Indian fighter, nor was a career of thrills
his purpose in enlisting. He declared he joined the
infantry, because jobs in Cleveland were so scarce, he
could not earn enough to eat. The army post paid him
$13 a month. Of that he saved $10 each month and sent
it to his mother.
This was published in The Huntingdon Daily News,
Huntingdon, Pennsylvania on November 18th, 1929
and also in The Danville Bee, November 22nd, 1929.

Where was Philip Wanger born ?
Who was Philip Wanger? a look at the 1930 census of Geneva township, Ashtabula County, Ohio gives some information. He was
living on South Broadway with his wife Emily and an adopted son William. 84 y.o., he was married at the age of 35 with Emily 19
y.o. He stated having emigrated in 1849, being born Belgium from a father born France and a mother born Belgium and his native
language being German. His wife being from an Ohio family. Their adopted son being 45 y.o. and divorced, born Ohio from parents
born in the United States.
Till now, nothing amiss, but when going back with those censuses, all sorts of origin are stated. In 1920 he stated being born Ohio, his
father from France and his mother from Germany. In 1910 being born Ohio from German parents.
In 1900 he was living in Lakewood Hamlet, Rockport Township, Cuyahoga County, Ohio, born in February 1848 in Germany from
German parents and having emigrated in 1860, his adopted son born Pennsylvania.
105
Belgian Laces Vol#34‐133 At the same place in 1880, before his marriage, he is listed twice. First as a farm laborer born Ohio from parents born Baden
(Germany) and second with his parents Adam and Eva Wanger all born in Baden. His younger brothers and sister John, Randolph and
Birdie born Ohio. Same thing in 1870, also listed an elder sister Eliza, born like him and his parents in Germany. Five younger
brothers and sisters, all born Ohio. No information found in the 1860 census.
License marriage

and Emma Pety,

Cuyahoga County,
Ohio
His military Career.
He enlisted at Cleveland on February 16, 1875, born Baden, Germany, 24 year and 5 months old, a farmer, eyes: Grey, hair: Brown,
complexion: Fair, height: 5,7½, in the 2nd Infantry, company K. He was discharged February 15, 1880 by expiration of service at
Camp Howard, Indian territory still a private, « character excellent ».
Philip Wanger joined his Unit, stationed at Mobile, Alabama. It was not before September 1876 that his Company left Alabama to be
sent to Atlanta, Georgia and from there to Newport Barracks, Kentucky. The 2nd Infantry was sent in Idaho in 1877, company K
arriving in Lewiston in July 1877. From 1877 till his discharge, Philip Wanger was in garrison duty with his company in that area,
essentially at Spokane falls and Mt Idaho. Some companies, but not company K as far as I was able to gather information, were
slightly involved in the Chief Joseph Nez Perce war
What to conclude?
Except for the newspaper article and the 1830 census, all the information founds are giving his birthplace in Germany. His sister
Elizabeth12 also stated in the 1900 census being born Germany. She also stated in that census is arrival in the States being about 1870.
So I can conclude he was of German origin and not a Belgian.
As to his account of the Custer massacre it’s sheer invention, it was not possible for him to be in June 1876 in Montana territory where
the battle was fought, because he was hundred of miles far away at Mobile, Alabama.
