S e pt e mb e r 20 16 Team Horner newsletter Employee Owned Company Team Horner Group Board of Directors Teammates: As you know from your recently received mailing, the Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) took effect at the beginning of 2016. This change in ownership has many implications; one important change is the formation of a new corporation which ultimately controls the destiny of our company, named the Team Horner Group, Inc. (THG). While the day-to -day operations will still be managed by our Vice President’s group, the legal control of all of the various companies lies with this new Board of Directors. What is new is the fact that several members of this THG Board are not employees of the company; each has been carefully chosen because of their unique knowledge of the history of our company (see photo). The new Board of Directors includes myself, our two ESOP trus- Bill Kent Chief Executive Officer, Team Horner tees, Mike Dooley and Gary Chisling, along with the following outside members: 1. Dr. Arthur Keiser, who represented the employees during the negotiated purchase of the company by the ESOP. Dr. Keiser is co-founder and Chancellor of Keiser University (KU). Combined with affiliate Everglades University, the schools have over 20,000 students and 3,500 employees. He is a member of my Vistage group and is very familiar with our company history and culture. 2. Gregg Wallick, owner and President of Best Roofing, a successful commercial roofing contractor with 220 employees. Gregg holds an MBA from University of Miami where he played college football and was Team Captain in 1977. Gregg is also a member of my Vistage group and is very familiar with every aspect of Team Horner. 3. Lesley Kent Baradel, my daughter, grew up working during school breaks in our company. Lesley holds two Masters’ degrees, recently was President of the Georgia Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, co-founded a web-based business called www.mymenupal.com, and is currently teaching a nutrition course on at Georgia Tech University in Atlanta. About 18 years ago, Lesley joined AquaCal and moved to Australia for two years to pioneer this market for heat pumps. She is married with three children. This group of talented and experienced individuals will provide the strategic leadership for our new ESOP-owned company. The BEST is yet to come for THG! I also want to acknowledge the brave first-responders and heroes who ran toward the danger, rather than away from it, to help—many of whom Mike Dooley President & Chief Operating Officer, Team Horner made the ultimate sacrifice. They will never be forgotten. The anniversary of 9/11 also makes me think about our military soldiers who have served— or continue to serve— to protect our country. Friday, November 11th is Veterans’ Day, and in honor of our Veterans, I would like to invite any Team Horner teammate who is a military veteran, to share a photo of yourself in our November newsletter, so that your service may be acknowledged. Heart attacks and strokes kill nearly as many as all the other causes of death combined. About 1/2 of heart attacks and 1/3 of strokes are NOT fatal. The lifetime cost of treating the survivor’s averages from $100,000 to $140,000 each. Conventional biometric screenings require 8-12 hour fasts and blood draws, which alienate many people. Even for those that get the conventional screening, checks for cholesterol and blood pressure can still miss up to half of the potential victims of heart attack and stroke! The Solution: AngioScreen ® is a 10 minute, on-site screening. AngioScreen® requires no preparation or blood-work. It provides the best known tests for detecting vascular disease, the leading cause of heart attacks and strokes, and it instantly provides a highly engaging written and digital visual report! For the first time participants can see what the lining of their arteries look like in an instant one-page report. The testing is mobile, noninvasive, involves no radiation and no needles and costs just $25 at our health fair. Participants will receive the following materials at completion of the AngioScreen ®: 1. 8.5" x 11" glossy color photo personal report (two-sides) 2. Digital format of printout (PDF file) 3. 4-page educational piece detailing individual studies 4. Non-diagnostic consultation 5. Way to go Julian Mesa, Lina Barona, Roland and Vivian Gaete! Coach Julia At two sessions of “Take a Break with Coach Julia” in July, teammates got to sit down with Coach Julia Kadel and learn what fuels her passion for well-being and get some great insights about her approach. Coach Julia describes herself as an “Italian Jersey girl” who had a family history of heart disease, cancer and high blood pressure. She saw her Dad, Mom and sister suffer and decided she wanted a different path to do what she could to live a healthier life. She got into fitness and managed health clubs. Coach Julia even still struggled with letting go of being a social smoker. When she wanted to learn all she could about nutrition knowing it was the missing link, she studied at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition and has been studying nutrition ever since. One of her favorite takeaways from all her nutrition training is that there are just two types of food. Cont’d pg. 7 6 Color Me Healthy...Cont’d from pg. 6 Primary foods: That which nourishes us from the outside-- work, family, friends, and our spirituality. Secondary foods: That which we consume-- our food and drink. Even if we are eating, drinking and exercising healthfully, but our primary food, (our outside influences) are causing stress, our efforts are greatly undermined. As a health coach, Julia says she recognizes the “bio-individuality” of people. What works for one person does not work for another. We are all so different, she says. Her job is to ask key questions and listen to help people discover what they want to work on most. Sometimes it is stress, other times nutrition, fitness, work-life balance, and even spirituality. If something is way out of balance, Coach Julia helps people discover their own best strategies to deal with it. Coach Julia has been coaching teammates at Team Horner for three and a half years and is available for one to one coaching. We also have Coach Andrea, Coach Natalie, Coach Tracy and Coach Shannon available for one to one coaching. Coach Julia served up her famous zucchini muffins, nobake energy bites and kalicious green smoothie to the workshop attendees. Contact Kim Kent at [email protected] or (305) 282-0335 to learn more or enroll in one to one coaching or get Coach Julia’s recipes. I learned about it at last year’s Health Fair. It truly has been a life changing experience for me. I know one of the goals here is to “lose”, but I have “gained” more through this class than I could have ever expected or hoped for. While on this journey, I have gained knowledge, motivation, discipline, energy, better health and most of all, selfconfidence. Coach Dawn, the YMCA Coach, has been a beacon of information and was able to break down the science of everything so that it made sense. I was able to apply those lessons to my lifestyle and actually understand the impacts and changes it would bring about. I feel like our class was like a little family, all there with the same goals and respect for one another. I don’t think I would have had the success in the program I did without it. Meet Nikki Carpenter, Field Service Dispatch Administrator, AquaCal/AutoPilot My current weight loss to date is 75 lbs. and I have been able to go off my blood pressure medication. I was able to achieve this by following the guidelines of the class and gradually increasing my activity minutes from the recommended 150/week to a minimum of 200 minutes a week. Not every day was perfect or successful, but I also learned in this class, that every day is another opportunity to make better choices and to start anew. Little by little the lessons and hard work will start to show, you just have to stick with it and believe in yourself. There is nothing better in life than to feel good….....and this program can help you do just that!!! I am so excited to work for a company that truly cares about their employees and I’m thankful for the wonderful resources available to me thru Color Me Healthy that explore all aspects of wellbeing. I’ve learned it is truly about making a lifestyle change that is not denying yourself things in the process. Hello all. Some of you might know me as the guy that walks laps between the offices and the stone canyon that sprouted out of the asphalt but we’ve never met; my name is Jose Vazquez. I have the privilege of being the logistics manager for Stone Hardscapes and a proud member of Team Horner. I started working with the previous incarnation of Stone Hardscapes 11 years ago now, and its been a fun and interesting ride. Prior to working at Team Horner I spent time working with FedEX and for a construction equipment manufacturer based out of Spain. I received my degree from Florida International University with a double major in Logistics and International Business. I like to think of myself as a jack of all trades and I like challenges that require quick thinking and problem solving. I met my lovely wife Jenny while in college and we have three beautiful children who keep my soul young and can always pick me up and make everything right without fail. When I’m not busy working on trying to get pretty rocks This Month’s Featured Team Player: Jose Vazquez from point A to point B, I’m dreaming about how to get pretty rocks from point A to point B ( sad, right ? ). Thankfully not true, I enjoy spending time with my children in their varied activities. I just started coaching my son’s soccer team which has been a great experience. My family enjoys the outdoors and we try to take a vacation every year that allows us to enjoy some aspect of nature or visit some historically significant location. We particularly enjoy the mountains and have visited and hiked every high point in the Blue Ridge Mountains along the North Carolina and Tennessee border. We have also hiked through the Smokey Mountains and Rocky Mountains. I also enjoy reading history, kayaking and cooking and have been trying to learn to play guitar but it’s been a bit of a challenge. My son is actually helping me with this as he is more accomplished but if I don’t pick it up at least I encourage him to try. F.O.F stands for Full of Fluff. In our hectic, technology based, society so many of our competitors are just F.O.F. They use generic terms like customer service, good quality, and best pricing. Think of the last time someone told you Pamela Luciani–Zubik General Manager Stone Hardscapes, LLC they had great customer service. How did you feel? Did it create a feeling of confidence? Were you encouraged to do business with them? When someone says things like that to me it just goes in one ear and out the other, almost like they said nothing at all. We don’t want to be included in this superficial bubble. We want to provide our client’s with information that is full of substance and fills them up with information they need and tools they find useful. In other words we want to provide M.A.P., Meat & Potatoes type of information. The acronyms are silly, but they are meant to be. We wanted to use something we could remember so when we are speaking to our clients we keep them in mind. As we are out in the field everyday meeting hundreds of prospects each week we have begun honing in on what our clients and potential clients tell us is frustrating or missing when they do business with our competitors. We are taking the information provided and creating programs and services to specifically address these needs. We have found our clients need the following from their stone provider: Payment terms The ability to place a standard order without having to give a deposit to hold the material Confidence that when they do place an order the material will be there when they are ready for it Trust that a pricing structure is in place so the end consumer is not sold material at the same price it is sold to them Comfort in the ability to send a client into our showroom knowing we will protect their relationship and not sell direct Assurance that we stand behind our product 100% Clarity on the differential between quality levels so they can make more money by selling upgraded selections others are not offering simply because they are misinformed by competing importers who want to keep the lines blurred for their benefit The understanding that we will do what we say we will do and we will be clear and specific as to what that is. In the coming weeks you will see our weekly email communications focused around the above topics and many others we are working on. Cont’d pg. 21 20 Stone Hardscapes...Cont’d from pg. 20 Our goal is to strengthen our relationships with our clients through transparency, honesty, and integrity, to create an open forum for discussion and accurate information, to remove the misconceptions in our industry developed by those with only their personal interests in mind. A brief recap has the industry seeing a lot of competition coming into the market at this time. Air Energy, EUS, Heat Siphon, Heat Pumps Unlimited, SunPulse and Florida Heat Pump to name just a few. The industry was heating up you might say. This increased pressure was driving changes here at Jeff Tawney Vice President, AquaCal AutoPilot AquaCal as well. It was in 1986 that, while still using the round cabinet shape, AquaCal transitioned from our fiberglass cabinet to a plastic version. This was a big cost saver. We introduced the automatic bypass concept to better handle the use of the Cupro-nickel tube in tube coils. We also introduced sharp four color professional brochures which were highlighted in the last newsletter. Now, moving forward with the narrative, the added competitive pressure, especially from Florida Heat Pump (FHP), a leading geothermal air conditioning manufacturer, was raising the bar on the looks and the quality of design and feature set incorporated in the HPPH’s. Of course, it didn’t help that FHP got into this market at the urging of a certain Distributor located just down the street from the FHP Ft. Lauderdale headquarters. At this time, Horner Equipment was AquaCal’s largest customer and Horner’s decision to bring in the FHP unit was a shocker for AquaCal. In response to all that was happening in the marketplace, AquaCal initiated several strategic moves. In 1987, while not specifically cancelling our distribution customers, we expanded a Dealer direct program that effectively cut them out except for their most loyal customers. Our distribution partners were Horner Equipment and Miller. See our Dealer direct price sheet (pictured above). Prices are remarkably similar to current prices for the equivalent TropiCal units. This price lists depicts two other key changes we made in 1987-89. We re-designed the AquaCal line, changing its shape from a round unit to a “D” shaped unit. Model numbers changed from 500, 750, 1000 and 1500, which represented the maximum square footage of pool surface the model should be applied, to the D40, D45, D60 and D90…the “D” representing the shape and the nu- Cont’d pg. 27 26 Jeff Tawney, AquaCal/AutoPilot...Cont’d from pg. 26 meric value representing the Btuh of the model. The “D” shape allowed easier assembly and service. It also allowed us to incorporate the by-pass manifold with a backflow protection loop to protect against highly corrosive liquids bleeding out of in-line chlorinators during the “off” cycle of the filtration pump. The price list also shows the addition of the HeatWave model line. This line was added in direct response to the FHP line brought on by Horner. The FHP had higher Btu’s as compared to our “D” models and was perceived as the best unit on the market. Our HeatWave was designed to take on that perception. The battle was on in SE Florida but for the rest of the State the HeatWave was clearly the best and helped AquaCal become the dominant manufacturer in the State of Florida…except for the SE/Horner Equipment territory. In 1988 we produced our first brand label, the “National Pools” heat pump. National Pools was a builder based in Pinellas County, just up the road from our factory. They were heavily involved in new home construction and were cranking out hundreds of pools per year….with a heat pump on nearly every one. Like many volume/price business models…it didn’t last. 1989 was also the year we began production of the geothermal heat pump pool heater. Production was primarily for Symbiont and Roy King, who had designed the geo unit. As 1990 came around, AquaCal was “doing all right”. Most of our major design issues had been addressed. We had relocated to what is now our Bldg. #1 having outgrown our original building (what is now Bldg. #3). We had two service trucks on the road and our service was a key driver of our success. The use of Air Conditioning contractors to facilitate warranty service was still a developing model for our competitors and our Service Team, then as well as now, was one key to our sales success. Things were looking bright for Aqua Cal and HPPH business. You know what they say….”the light at the end of the tunnel just may be a train!” The train wreck is a story for next time. Cont’d pg. 28 27 Jeff Tawney, AquaCal/AutoPilot...Cont’d from pg. 27 Current events find us in the dog days of Summer. As Summer markets and pool heating go, it has been a good summer. The Salt Chlorine market is a fast changing one and we are working on multiple responses to the market pressures of our competitors and alternative channels to market/the Internet. We have begun our first contract manufacturing job for our Plastics division. We are making a key component of a neat new product on the market called the “Skim a Round,” a floating skimmer. We look to add more of these contract production jobs for this facility. We currently, for our own needs, consume about 50% of the capacity we have in Plastics, so we will continue to pursue other opportunities to effectively use that capacity. Our Long Island warehouse has proven to be a big benefit for our existing customers and a good tool for attracting new. Activity is slowing up North though…good thing Florida’s Heat Pump market is just around the corner. Kids are back in school….keep an eye out for them. Keep them safe and be well. I want to take this opportunity to congratulate everyone on a great July and August. 2016 is definitely shaping up to be an excellent year. This would not be possible without the hard work and enthusiasm of everyone on the team. We have now moved out of the dog days of summer into September. This time of year feels like a new beginning as we move into the fall heat pump season in Florida Don Detwiler and Arizona and we move into the fall selling season in our more seasonal marVP, Sales kets. The sales team will be involved in several special events this fall. AquaCal AutoPilot, Inc. [email protected] Our National Sales Meeting will take place September 12 – 14 in St. Petersburg, FL. This 610-637-0517 is the one time a year the entire sales team is together. We use this time for team bonding, product and program introduction, as well as strategy formulation. I am looking forward to seeing everyone there! We are also participating in several customer focused events this fall. We will be hosting heat pump seminars at various locations throughout Florida in October and November. We will be participating in the International Pool & Spa Show in New Orleans from November 2-4. Please keep an eye out for the seminar schedule that should be published soon. Thanks again for an outstanding month. Looking forward to a great fall! With Football starting back up this time of year, I thought it was fitting to discuss our plans, practices, execution and audibles. The attached diagram depicts perfectly what I mean. We spend time, money and lots of effort to set a strategy in motion and create a plan for success. We practice and practice to ensure that we are ready for Darren Goldstein VP, HornerXpress when time meets opportunity. Fortunately, sometimes it works flawlessly. But… sometimes we zig and they zag, don’t they? When this happens, we need to call an audible. We need to take a quick pause, re- assess and re-evaluate – change direction (make a decision) and move forward. Soon enough we will reach our goals, look back at the journey and see just how many times our plan didn’t really match reality. The journey to our destination may take many twists and turns, but in the end, getting there is the real win! Thanks to all our teammates and the audibles we have called all-year long. Our ability to pivot and flex makes our team stronger! We truly care about everyone’s business along with the relationships we are building through the years, so let’s take a look at 10 good questions to start our conversations off with: How did you get into the pool business? Are you where you want to be? What ideas do you have in the next few years to get where you want to be? What areas of your business are giving you the most challenges? How do you obtain your customers? How do you figure out what to buy and from who? What is the most important aspect of making your purchasing decisions? I get that price is always on the top of the list, is that all you look at? How did you find Horner or what needs brought you to Horner? As we look back in our history, we have never seen months like we have had this year— highs and lows that are inconsistent with our sales history. We are selling more core and outdoor products than in the past, and pavers are how we made our goal this month. Great job by the sales team for going out and getting the paver orders. Gregg, Susan, and Kevin on the phones, Mike and Connor on the street, Randy, Danny, Malcom, and Andre doing the Bryant Ewing Area Manager driving, Kitty, Steve, and David everything else. Sometimes it is not easy, but all the customers are very understanding and very helpful, and we do our best to expedite what we all need to get the job done. Lisa, Wess, and Hank have been keying in the orders, and drivers Kris and Ray are putting everything on the ground. By far I am very blessed to have two great teams that can improvise, adapt and overcome when needed, pull together as one team, and get done whatever jobs need to get done! The upgrade market of accessories in and around the outdoor living area continues to be our biggest area of growth. “Fire” continues to be an increasingly hot topic (pun intended…) with more and more features being sold on jobs. Firepits, torches, water/fire bowl combinations are all growing in volume as more of our homeowners are being educated by dealers, retailers and television. We are seeing a large increase in the dollar value of projects – specifically renovation projects as we move into this next generation. Upgrades to travertine are replacing standard decks and a greater variety of paver options are also helping to increase sales and opportunity. Jordan King Area Manager Our DKA Kitchens are really doing well. It seems that every time I turn on HGTV (yes, I watch it) there are renovation projects that are almost always including outdoor spaces being upgraded to kitchens and water features, not just pools. Fountains, fire tables, and landscape design in the backyard are all very popular and growing. The rainy season is fully upon us and we are seeing its effects. Slowing down construction projects and moving a ton of chemicals. For most of us, it’s time. How many of us use the term “I don’t have time for that” in our daily conversations? Whether it is in our home life, or while working, we are all guilty of uttering that phrase. I read a pretty interesting article on how to have a more productive day using a few simple techniques geared toward mastering your own time. Here are a few highlights: 1) During your week, carry a schedule to record all your thoughts or activities. You will see how much time is spent on either producing results, or wasting time. Tom Williams Area Manager 2) If an activity is important to your success, you should assign a time to get that activity accomplished. Schedule appointments with your elf and assign a beginning time and an ending time to accomplish the activity. 3) Spend at least half of your time engaged in the activities that will produce most of your results. 4) Actually schedule time for interruptions. Another way of saying “office hours” is “planned interruptions” 5) Take the first thirty minutes of every day to plan your day. Do not start your day until you have a plan. 6) Take five minutes before every call you make to decide what results you want to attain. After the call, take five minutes to review the call. Were you successful or not? If not, what was missing? 7) When you absolutely have to accomplish a task, do not see anyone or field any interruptions. 8) Practice not answering the phone just because it is ringing or answer emails just because they show up. Try to schedule time to answer emails and return calls unless it is urgent. 9) Block out social media unless it is a tool to generate business. 10) Remember that it is nearly impossible to get everything done. Chances are that twenty percent of your thoughts or actions produce eight percent of your results. We have two fiber optic lines and one of them has had issues. Well, yester- day during the storm, our building was hit by lightning, which took out our remaining good line. It’s a good thing we didn’t get rid of the smoke signal machine or the homing pigeons. We really appreciate everyone’s patience. We’re sure you can hear the frustration in our voices. Besides the 8 inches of rain in 15 hours from Hermine, we had a wet couple of weeks which created a large sinkhole in our parking lot. It looks like a large swimming pool at this point. I think I’d still rather swim in our sinkhole than the Rio pools. Although, the Olympics did show us the amazing things can be done in a swimming pool, even if it’s green. We are starting to wonder what could be in store for us next; locusts, plague, we can’t wait to find out! On a product note, our concrete paver coping is now in stock. We have six colors on the ground and a couple more on the way. We have already delivered several orders. I do want to remind our customers that the paver world is hot right now, which can lead to six week lead times for deck pavers. Please call us for lead times on pavers, some are in stock. We have also received lot of new and beautiful tiles to compliment our already extensive stock of tiles. We will be getting samples out to our tile dealers shortly. We are also finding that our hard work on the outdoor kitchen and fire feature arena is starting to pay off. We have two new Summerset dealers and a builder has sold two kitchens. We also have the square FireFX bowls in stock and have had several installs that turned out great. On a final note, I wanted to reiterate something I wrote about in the last newsletter. In the last newsletter we had several great articles about customer service. With all the issues here, it’s hard to stay positive and upbeat with customers as you stare at a little blue circle spinning around. Just wanted to remind my own team and anyone that deals with customers, how good it feels to be on the receiving end of great customer service. I was lucky enough to have two wonderful experiences and I will remember them longer than the bad ones I’ve had. How easy it can be to make someone’s day. Kiev dominated it from the 9th to 12th century. After the destruction of Kiev by the Mongols in the 13th century, the territory was conquered by the dukes of Lithuania, although it retained a degree of autonomy. Belarus became part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, which merged with Poland in 1569. Following the partitions of Poland in 1772, 1793, and 1795, in which Poland was divided among Russia, Prussia, and Austria, Belarus became part of the Russian empire. Following World War I, Belarus proclaimed itself a republic, only to find itself occupied by the Red Army soon after its March 1918 announcement. The Polish-Soviet War of 1918– 1921 was fought to decide the fate of Belarus. West Belarus was ceded to Poland; the larger eastern part formed the Belorussian SSR, and was then joined to the USSR in 1922. In 1939, the Soviet Union took back West Belarus from Poland under the secret protocol of the Nazi-Soviet Nonaggression Pact and incorporated it into the Belorussian Soviet Socialist Republic. MY HOME TOWN - VITEBSK Vitebsk was first mentioned in 947 AD. According to legend, Princess Olga of Kiev founded the city. Since early times the town had been known as a "warrior." So it is not by chance that its ancient emblem featured a horseman holding a spear and shield. Vitebsk was an important fortress and merchant center at the north-eastern border of the Polatsak Principality and later of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (GDL); a famous medieval state which became the cradle of Belarusians and Lithuanians. Vitebsk was included into the GDL in 1320 and its citizens obtained some merchant privileges and self-government. In 1597 Vitebsk was granted the Magdeburg Code of Law. After unification with Russia (1772) Vitebsk became an ordinary provincial town of a huge military empire. Culture, public education, science and health service developed at a rapid pace. World War II was a very serious trial for Vitebsk people. On June 26, 1944 Red Army troops cleared the town, laid in ruins, of the fascist occupants. Only 118 people had survived in the basements, from about 170,000 of population before the war. Only in the end of the 1960s did the population of Vitebsk achieve the level of 1939. The town's new life began after the liberation. New factories, plants, dwelling houses, schools, hospitals, streets and avenues were built in place of the charred ruins. Vitebsk is today one of the most beautiful towns in Belarus and the famous festival "Slavic Bazaar" in Vitebsk invites visitors every year. 39 Cybercrime is a rising threat faced globally by businesses and individuals alike. Unfortunately, it’s one of those things you don’t really think too much about until you’re impacted. Because cybercriminals are so skilled, they seem to evolve at a pace exponentially faster than the various software solutions created to protect business and consumers. And while consumers scramble to protect themselves against such threats, businesses must be extra diligent in their efforts as they are not only protecting themselves, but also the information their customers have entrusted them with. If hackers are successful in breaching the network of a business, the potential damage that can be done is devastating. While there is no foolproof way to protect yourself from cyber- Billy L. McKinley Accounting Manager HornerXpress Worldwide criminals, there are a few simple tips that can help you in thwarting their efforts: Protect your computer with security software. Some of the security essentials are a firewall and antivirus programs. A firewall serves as your computer (or network’s) “policeman” by analyzing the data that is flowing through and blocking the bad traffic, such as attacks, from ever reaching you. Antivirus software monitors all online activity and protects you from viruses, worms, and other malicious programs. Protect your personal information. Exercise caution and common sense when sharing personal information. The more information you share, the more vulnerable you are. Always know with whom you are sharing your information. Keep an eye out for phony email messages. Some signs a message may be fraudulent are misspellings, poor grammar, odd phrasings, web site addresses with strange extensions, etc. Don’t respond to email messages that ask for sensitive information and, if ever in doubt, contact the known source via telephone or via their webpage. The best preventive measure is having the knowledge of proper lifting techniques. The amount of compressive force that is placed on the back during different stages of Louis P. Preziosi Inventory Management Director/Fleet Manager HornerXpressSouth Florida lifting is highlighted below. Please be aware of this as it is critical to keeping yourself and your back in a healthy state for years to come. 41 In Florida, commercial swimming pools are regulated by chapter 64-E of the Florida building code. This code strives to ensure that any pool in our state that is required to have an operating permit issued by the State DOH operate in a manner that is considered safe for the patrons that use the facility. Conversely, any pool operating outside of the regulations of this code can be closed immediately, or within a time designated by the DOH to correct the problems that are considered a threat to public safety, or dangerous to our health. As a distributor, what does this mean to us, should we be aware of the items within this code. My answer is: absolutely we should! In our continuing goal of being a consultant to our customers, it means that we are the conduit of information to help guide our customers in providing the minimum safety and health standards Rick Myers Commercial Sales Manager Horner Xpress [email protected] 954.650.6320 for the pools that they take care of. Along the same vein, it is the responsibility of our customers to provide the same information to the properties so that the pools they maintain are done so according to this code. Is this government intrusion in our industry? Some may say it is, but I believe we all need to embrace 64E and be aware of all of the subsections, paragraphs, changes and rules within this code. The reasons for this are several. Firstly, an informed and educated pool company is a true consultant to these properties and makes sure their properties are safe and operating properly. In this day and age, anything outside that, especially when an accident or outbreak of disease happens, the finger pointing starts, and an unacceptable answer is definitely “we did not know that was the law.” In Florida, the DOH provides operating permits to some 40,000 pools and spas and in 2016, there were some significant changes to both remodeling and daily operation of these bodies of water. The state has also come up with lists of infractions that constitute immediate closure or minor infractions that allow several days to fix. In the case of remodeling, if we help to guide our customers to the proper selection of equipment, decking, tile, and pool finishes we can alleviate problems down the road. Also, knowledge of what infractions are immediate fixes vs. time to fix can help them to save time and money. At Team Horner, we are committed to educating both our customers, and our employees. Through continuing education, everyone is a better employee, company, or facility. I believe the answer we need to give to everyone is that “I know that” or, “I know where I can find that information.” This approach will provide for safer, cleaner, healthier pool water for us as residents of Florida, and to the millions of people that vacation here each year. Should you need any help in understanding this code, please let me know and I will walk you through every section if necessary, and thank you for your time. 42 Maria C. de la Peña Hoff Marketing Manager, Team Distribution Kim Guerra Marketing Manager, Team Manufacturing Jeannine Santini Team Art Director Kevin Hackett Team Web Manager To ALL our Friends, As some get back to “normal” with the end of summer vacations and kids back to school, we here at Team Horner Marketing gear up for a few busy and exciting months as we end the year.
