Purpose of Using Strategy:
Peeling Off involves identifying affixes at the beginning and ending of
words. Students decode the root word then blend the word parts to read
the entire word.
VII.
Steps:
1. Students review a list of prefixes and suffixes. (Attachment)
2. With a partner, students circle prefixes and suffixes in the word.
3. Individually the student writes - “The root is ________. The word
meaning is _______.”
4. With their A/B partner, students will read the prefix, suffix, and root.
Then they will state the word and the meaning of the word.
VIII. Tip:
Remind students to be careful of clusters that look like prefixes.
