Locks of Love for Kids Just Like Us
By: Klairice Schwartz
Do you know what
Locks of Love is?
Well I do! My
friend, Crystal Cafferty and my little
sister, Allison Schwartz, donated
to Locks of Love. Now, I bet your
question is “What did they donate?” It is their hair!
Crystal and Allison both
had their hair cut by Cindy Myers
from the Shear Dimensions Hair
Salon here in Mauston. When
Allison had her hair cut, I had a
chance to interview Cindy about
Locks of Love and what happens
after the hair is cut.
By donating hair to
Locks of Love you are giving hair
pieces to kids under the age of 18
with long term medical hair loss.
Most kids get their wigs or hair
pieces for free based on their family income. The hair must be 10
inches long because when the hair
goes to the center they wash and
clip the hair and make a wig. The
hair must be fairly healthy and
can be color treated as long as it is
not damaged. The hair stylist puts
the hair in a Ziploc bag and send
it by regular mail to West Palm
Beach, Florida.
I think that this is great
gift to give to kids because it
helps gain self confidence in kids
who suffer from hair loss. I hope
someday that I will be donating to
Locks of Love.

the Mauston all-star

in a tournament at
Adams, WI. The first
team that we had to play was
Adams. They were a tough
team, but Mauston was better,
and won 6-2. The second team
that we had to play was Nekoosa. They were the best team
we had to play in the tournament. Fortunately, we beat them
too (they ended up in second
place). Next we had to play
Reedsburg, and if we win wewould take first place. The first
time we played them we lost 4-3.
They scored all their runs in the
first inning. In the second game,
we won 12-1 with help from
Mitchell Gray who had a good
throw to home. Mitchell Seifert
had an even better play at home
with an amazing dive at home

a triple to left center. The best
news of all is that we took first
place. We only got medals, no
trophy’s, but still we took first.

Deer Hunting With Dad
By: Trevor Lalk
Deer hunting is fun because I
get to spend time
with my dad. We go
sit in the woods on
my grandma and papa’s land.
We have to be very quiet or the
deer will get scared away. I
can’t wait until November every
year. My dad and I count down
days until deer hunting. Some of
the reasons that there is a deer
hunting season is because there
can’t get to be too many deer or
people will start to get into more
car accidents from hitting deer.
There isn’t enough food to feed
all the deer in the winter time. A
lot of deer die when we have a
cold and snowy winter. They
have a hard time finding food to
eat and starve to death.
You can use a bow to
hunt deer in September. Gun season isn’t until November. The gun
hunting season lasts 9 days. My
dad tries to go as much as he can.
He loves to hunt for the big
bucks. Sometimes I get to go in
the woods with my dad when it is
T-zone. That means you get to
hunt extra time beyond the 9 day
deer hunt. You are only allowed
to shot a doe.
My dad and I go shining.
It is so much fun to make grunt
noises when we see a big buck.
Sometimes I wear my gloves because it gets cold with the windows down in the car. I have a

Today we had to get up at 4:00 in

off at 7:40. We had to go through
the security line where you have
to take off your shoes and stuff.
Then you have to put your shoes

cousin’s house in New York City!
John and I played with my cousin,
Jesse’s, dog Cheddar. Then we
took a walk with Cheddar through
Central Park. We got back to the
apartment and watched TV and
played with Cheddar for a while.
Then we went to the Empire State

We had so much fun!

My Trip to Hayward
By: Crystal Cafferty
Crystal Cafferty and
her family went to her
grandpa’s cabin in
Hayward. They took
a car to get there and it took four
hours to
get there. They went at
the end of July. When they were
there they went to a museum.
There was a world record Muskie.
It was 65 inches long! There was
also a variety of stuffed fish.
Our neighbors had a lake
that we could go fishing in. So
we did. The fish that they caught
were very slimy and scaly. Crystal’s step-brother, Austin Remington, caught 12 baby Northern
Pikes. We could not keep them
because they were too small.
Next they walked to a bait shop
and got ice cream. It was a long
walk, it took two miles there and
two miles back! They used real
bait and fake bait. Crystal didn’t
catch anything, but her family did.
Hayward was awesome!

breakfast today. Yummy! For
lunch, I ate a smore cup. For supper, we had Subway. We went to
the Museum of Natural History.
We also saw a show, ‘The Blue

back to Wisconsin. What a great
trip! But, I’m glad to be back

On August 1st my
family and I left home
to go to Florida. We rode in the
car until we got to my grandma’s
house in Rockford, Illinois. The
next morning we were on the road
for 13 hours. Then on August 3rd
we were at Florida. It was exciting I couldn’t believe it! It was
beautiful; I have never seen anything like this before. The next
morning we went Sea world it
was cool. I saw dolphins that I got
to feed those fish and then I was
able to pet them too. It’s fun.
Then we went to see the Shamu
show. We had to shout Shamu !
Shamu ! Then he splashed us with
his tail and we
got wet. Afterwards we went and
got ice cream and headed back to
the hotel and went to bed. The
next day we went to universal
studios watched movies that were
3d and 4d. There were some cartoons like the Mummy and Curious George and the last thing that
we did was we went to the beach.
I had a blast there we left the
beach at 6pm and went out for
supper then we went to the hotel
and went to sleep. The next morning we got up at 6am and we had
breakfast. Then we left for the
long trip home we got back to my
grandmas at 12am. We left there

When she got home, she

jack o’ lantern to Cleo. Cleo
turned around and saw the jack o’

"I thought I heard someone talking." "Hi" said the jack o’ lantern

say hi. And so, Cleo and the jack
o’ lantern made friends. And they
lived happily ever after.

we were bored. We were fishing
on a wooden dock. We almost
caught a huge bass. We were going to go home when Austin said,
"Let’s cast one more time before
we go home." I said "ok." So we
did. We got a very big bite on the
line. I almost got pulled in the
water. The bass put up a big fight.
We saw part of it. It was about 7.5
pounds and 17.5 in long. Austin
went back later to try again and he
almost caught it.

loose hair off of them so they
don’t get sores. Every 6 months
we have their hooves trimmed so
that way they don’t get lame.
Lame is when they get a sore leg
or hoof. A mule is very sure
footed, which means that they can
keep their footing on the trail,
where a horse can lose it footing

were used a lot for packing, which
means carrying. The settlers used
mules to carry meat to their
homes if they were hunting far

½ Horse and they can’t have babies. A girl mule is called a
Jennie. Mules have long ears,
which are always moving. Something that I find interesting about
mules is that they can see all the
way around them. Their eyes are
placed off the side of their heads
far enough that they can see, everywhere.
