This single Act has led to a significant increase in the number and detail of CR-related questions demanded from all our PQQ and tender submissions, both private and public sectors, where community social value has to be demonstrated and evidenced in every procurement process. Against this background, it is clear that our associate membership of the Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS), the comprehensive registration of our projects across the country and our continued excellent performance within the Scheme’s Code of Conduct is of critical importance to our future business. The five areas under which our projects are assessed under the Scheme (Workforce, Safety, Environment, Community and Appearance) are very much at the heart of how we measure and demonstrate our CR credentials to both existing and potential clients. We use the performance data that we get from the CCS monitors (in effect, third-party assessors) to demonstrate to clients how we work closely and sensitively within the communities and environments surrounding our projects. Armed with such evidence from CCS scores, our PQQ and bid teams can provide real, tangible data to prove to clients that we consistently out-perform the industry average wherever our work takes us. For nearly every contract we tender, whether in the Construction, Services or Property/Homes business streams, there are a plethora of questions seeking evidence that we can genuinely deliver social, environmental and economic value to the communities in which the project is located. The CCS scores we have achieved in that locality, together with the monitors’ reports indicating best practice or innovation, have proved invaluable in providing such evidence. So I ask all project teams to please keep up the good work in consistently out-performing our competitors and help us win even more business in the future. Steve Bowcott Chief Operating Officer Kier Group plc Kier Group plc Considerate Constructors Scheme performance review - first half 2013 1 2,000th site registered with the CCS scheme Since becoming an associate member of the Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS) in January 2008, Kier has registered over 2,000 sites with the scheme. We stand alongside 52 other contractors as associate members, proving our commitment to comply with all aspects of the Scheme’s Code of Considerate Practice. Kier’s chief operating officer (COO) Steve Bowcott recently joined former CCS director and monitor Nigel Marks atop the roof of our construction project St Georges Court on New Oxford Street, London. This milestone event represents our commitment not only to our associate membership, and acknowledges the long-standing commitment Kier has made towards improving the image of the industry. It also demonstrates our ability to consistently achieve the things that make up the CCS Code of considerate practice: Caring about our appearance Respect for the community Protection for the environment Securing everyone’s safety Valuing our workforce More details on how to achieve best practice on each of these criteria can be found on page three. Pictured front left: former scheme director and monitor Nigel Marks present the award to Steve Bowcott, COO. They will: Care about appearance: Constructors should ensure sites appear professional and well managed. Ensure that the external appearance of sites enhances the image of the industry. Be organised, clean and tidy. Enhance the appearance of facilities, stored materials, vehicles and plant. Raise the image of the workforce by their appearance. Respect the community: Constructors should give utmost consideration to their impact on neighbours and the public. Inform, respect and show courtesy to those affected by the work. Minimise the impact of deliveries, parking and work on the public highway. Contribute to and support the local community and economy. Work to create a positive and enduring impression, and promote the Code. Protect the environment: Constructors should protect and enhance the environment. Identify, manage and promote environmental issues. Seek sustainable solutions, and minimise waste, the carbon footprint and resources. Minimising the impact of vibration, and air, light and noise pollution. Protecting the ecology, the landscape, wildlife, vegetation and water courses. Secure everyone’s safety: Constructors should attain the highest levels of safety performance. Have systems that care for the safety of the public, visitors and the workforce. Minimise security risks to neighbours. Have initiatives for continuous safety improvement. Embed attitudes and behaviours that enhance safety performance. Value their workforce: Constructors should provide a supportive and caring working environment. Provide a workplace where everyone is respected, treated fairly, encouraged and supported. Identify personal development needs and promote training. Care for the health and well-being of the workforce. Provide and maintain high standards of welfare. Kier Group plc Considerate Constructors Scheme performance review - second half 2013 3 Kier Group performance from July to December 2013 The graph below shows the Kier Group average scores over the last year compared directly with industry average. As you can see we have consistently performed above the industry average as a Group over the last six months. Please ensure that once the monitor’s report has been received, it is discussed and analysed to identify areas for improvement. 45 40 35 30 25 Industry average Kier Group average 20 No of registrations 15 10 5 0 Jan-13 Feb-13 Mar-13 Apr-13 May-13 Jun-13 Jul-13 Aug-13 Sep-13 Oct-13 Nov-13 Dec-13 Scores above the industry average As a Group we consistently outperform the industry average and since July have beaten this score, however we do need to aim to exceed this average by at least two points every month in the future. It demonstrates how important it is for projects to take into account and use the comments and feedback made by monitors on first visits. The table below shows that safety has the highest average throughout the second half of 2013, which is consistent with the first half of the year. This is very encouraging to see as the safety of Kier’s employees and the public continues to be of the utmost importance to the Group.
