November 26, 2012 Welcome Back! This week we will continue our unit, What’s on the Menu. We will be learning all about markets including the different departments and jobs that can be found there. We will be creating our own shopping lists during writing to go with this theme! Important Dates: This week in reading we will be learning the following new sounds: /y/, /q/, and / x/. The silly sentence for /y/ is yank the yellow yo-yo. For /q/ the silly sentence 11/27 White Day 11/28 Blue Day 11/29 White Day 11/30 Blue Day the alphabet sounds would be a great idea to help you child advance into that 12/3 White Day application. 12/4 Blue Day is the queen is quite quiet, and for /x/ the silly sentence is the excited fox exercises. This will conclude all of our individual letter sounds in the alphabet! Now that all of the letters in the alphabet have been taught, we will hope to see the students applying this knowledge to make and read words. Continuing to practice For math this week, we will be introducing 3-D shapes including the sphere, cube, cone, and cylinder. We will talk about one shape each day and identify things all around us that make these shapes. Identifying these shapes in the real world with your student will benefit them greatly, so take a look around with your child and see what 3-D shapes you can find! As a part of this unit, we would like to use different foods in those four shapes to give the students a hands on model of 3-D shapes. If you are interested in helping us out with this, please see the donations insert below! **Donations** We are looking for different snack foods in the shape of a sphere, cube, cone, and cylinder. If you could donate a class size item for the class to use during math, we would greatly appreciate it! Some ideas include, but are not limited to: spheres—Trix or whoppers, cubes—caramel cubes or cheese cubes, cones—bugles or chocolate chips, cylinders—large marshmallows. You are welcome to add to this list if you have another idea. Please send these in as soon as possible or before Friday! Thank you! As it gets colder, please make sure your child brings a jacket to school. We will have outdoor recess even on those chilly days! Mrs. Berns’ class has computer lab and PE on BLUE days and math lab and music on WHITE days. Mrs. B’s class has computer lab and PE on WHITE days and math lab and music on BLUE days.
