TROOP 509 SCOUT EARNS DIFFICULT MEDAL
After Pete “Scooter” Craver earned his Eagle in May 2013, he was asked, “What’s next?”
His response? Earning the National Medal for Outdoor Achievement.
To do this, Scooter had to earn multiple “segments” of the National Outdoor Badge program, including Camping (with at least 125 nights of BSA camping), Hiking (with at least
200 miles of BSA hiking), and Aquatics (with at least 100 hours of specific water activities with BSA). He had to earn the Backpacking, Emergency Preparedness, Nature, and
Wilderness Survival merit badges. He had to complete 2 16-hour training courses for
Wilderness First Aid & Leave No Trace Trainer. He had to plan and lead outings and
adventure activities for one or more units, which included backpacking, hiking, and rockclimbing.
Earning the individual segments (available for Camping, Hiking, Aquatics, Riding, Adventure, and Conservation) is an
achievement by itself, but may be possible just by virtue of participating in the program. Earning the Medal requires setting
that as a goal and having a willingness to go the extra mile, with the foresight and planning to make it happen. Needless to say,
this didn’t just happen for Scooter, and the Medal recognizes a lot of hard work on his part.
For more information on the National Outdoor Badge program or the National Medal for Outdoor Achievement, see http://
www.scouting.org/scoutsource/BoyScouts/Youth/Awards/NOA.aspx.
Troop 509 Camp Out at Camp Burnett
Troop 509 kicked off their new camping season with a camp out at Camp Burnett on September 18th,
19th, and 20th. Many of the scouts were able to complete their requirements for rank advancement in
areas such as patrol cooking and patrol camping. One of the older scouts gave review demonstrations
in first aid, lashings, and fire building. This was a great refresher for the younger scouts.
Although it rained for several hours, many of the scouts explored and splashed thru the creeks and
wooded areas enjoying the much needed rain. This really brought out the scouting spirit in all who participated.
Troop 509 is looking forward to our camp out at Possum Kingdom in October.

2015 Roadrunner District Rocket Launch
We are sending out a special THANK YOU to each and everyone of you who
attended our first New Scout Rocket Launch! It was an exceptional event
for everyone involved.
We welcomed our new Cubs this year with a rocket they put together themselves. Each had the opportunity to shoot it off into the sky as a
representation of them beginning their launch into Scouting.
For every Scout, Scout leader and Parent, our District welcomes you and
we hope you enjoyed yourself as much as we did.

THANK YOU AND THANK YOU
Saturday, September 12 was an especially great day to BE A Scout at Chisholm Park
in Hurst. Attendance was good (over 250) and well-represented from units across
Roadrunner District. Many stayed from start to finish. The weather was wonderful
and we had lots of fun through the afternoon. Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Venturers,
Scouts, and many new guests cam together to make Be A Scout Day a success.
Thanks to Troops 86, 250, 324, 387, 509, 757, and Crew 757. You each provided exciting and fun activities from climbing instruction, safe shooting, camp set up, map and
compass, free handouts and wildly popular obstacle course from Troop 332 and monkey bridge form Troop 387. The food, snacks and drinks were a hit, even though
there was a burn ban. Scouts showed how they can adapt. Our guest left with happy
tummies and smiles on their faces. We want to recognize Pack 253, 254, 307, 363, 387,
757, and 907 for participating. Cub leaders did their best to five their scouts a taste of
the adventure that awaits them when they bridge to Boy Scouts.
Special thanks to Chris Bankus, the Program Executive and Michael Patterson, the
Membership Executive for being there all day. Our retired Senior District Executive
Gale Folett and Bill Cooley handled the important task of Registration and Welcoming all day, and made a cute display that was a hit at the sign in booth. The National
office sent Mr. Michael who came out to take photos of our big event. Media coverage
is appreciated from the HEB newspaper and KLUV Radio. Teamwork contributed to
the success of the day, including the planning committee, activity committee, unit
leaders, and volunteers. Thanks to each of you. See some of the highlighted photos
and more will be posted at the “Roadrunner District, Longhorn Facebook” page.
Yours in Scouting,
Ping Mayo

Spring Garden Elementary Annual Citizenship Celebration with Pack 307 Cubs
Each year we are blessed to come front and center to show off our Scouts. The school continues to ask all Scouts in their
School to conduct the flag ceremony and Pledge of Allegiance. Spring Garden Elementary with the aid of local Emergency Service Employees and Harwood Junior High Wind Ensemble Band Members, uses this event in September to
explain to their students what it means to be a citizen. This year it was only Pack 307 who took this honor and proudly
displayed the colors at 8:30 am sharp. We thank the school, PTA, and our Cubs who wore their uniform and demonstrated their citizenship with honor.
