What a month we’ve had! It’s gone from 65 degree weather to snow storms and rain then back to the 60’s all in one week!! I don’t know about you but this is a little confusing to me and I’m in desperate need of seeing green grass and flowers!! I hope everyone has had a chance to meet Lindsey Green, our new general manager! She is doing a fantastic job! Stop by and say Hi!! We had an awesome start to the Lenten Fish Fry last month and I think everyone is happy with the food. St. Patrick’s Day was also a huge success and the corned beef was amazing!! I heard that there was a lot of green beer consumed that day!! Also, the 40 and 8 had a fantastic meat raffle!! Thanks to all the volunteers that are helping with the big meal events!! You are the backbone of our club and we all appreciate the extra time you put in to help us out!! I want to do a special shout out to the Auxiliary for the fun meat raffles and horse racing that they did on March 11th!! Everyone had a great time and the club was packed that day!! The chili contest was a great success! There was more than enough chili go around and everyone had a good time! Next year, we plan on doing a Daytona 500 Chili Cook-off and we will also have some surprise games and contests to go along with that!! Sergeant at Arms Tami Riha 651-900-2166 Don't forget the real meaning of Easter and make sure you spend some quality time with family and friends!! American Legion Post 1776, 14521 Granada Drive, Apple Valley MN 55124 Page 2 Scouting Update Our scouts have been busy in their fundraising efforts selling popcorn this year. We sold over $10,000 in popcorn and 16 scouts sold $250 or more to earn the privilege of throwing a pie at a leader. We had 7 leaders volunteer to be the victim of a pie or multiple pies. The boys were excited to have the opportunity to throw a pie at a leader and it proved to be a very exciting Troop meeting. Troop 205 welcomed 8 new Scouts into our Troop from 3 different Packs during their annual bridging ceremonies. We are excited to have them with us and we held our first Troop meeting with the new scouts on March 6th. They learned basic First Aid and had a chance to meet one another and decide on a patrol name. A basic Boy Scout skills boot camp is planned for March 19th and they will learn the skills necessary to be successful on their first outdoor camp out with the Troop in April. The March camp out was a success when 16 scouts and 4 adults traveled to Eagle Cave in Blue River, WI. The scouts were given the opportunity to explore and crawl around in a cave that has well over 3,000 feet of passage and four main walking levels. Beneath the walking levels are four levels of subterranean tunnels for exploring. After a long day of exploring, the scouts were then given given the opportunity to spend the night in the cave. Our most recent Troop meeting covered the topic of Outdoor Ethics and the importance of preserving the outdoors while enjoying it. Scouts were given the opportunity to discuss and give their ideas on what we can do as a Troop to play a big part in helping preserve the environment. Yours in Scouting, Beth Kirchhoff Scoutmaster Troop 205 Beyond the Yellow Ribbon Network (BTYR) April 2017 March 2017 was a special time for the Apple Valley Beyond the Yellow Ribbon (BTYR) – we observed and celebrated our 5 year anniversary! We had a special chicken dinner for the 170 plus who attended. Mayor Mary Hamann-Roland of Apple Valley had some very inspiring words for us after dinner. Our local vendors were very generous in donating special prizes for those who attended, acknowledging how much they appreciate our Military and their families. President Paul Chellsen was the Master of Ceremonies, providing us a recap of the history of the Apple Valley BTYR and the many accomplishments over the past 5 years. He also thanked all those who helped make us a successful organization. We exist to serve Veterans, those actively in the Military, and their families by assisting them any way we can. Your help and support has been and continues to be very much appreciated! Submitted by Glenn Sonnee, Secretary, AV BTYR What is the Preamble and What Does it Mean? “TO CONSECRATE AND SANCTIFY OUR COMRADESHIP BY OUT DEVOTION TO MUTUAL HELPFULNESS...” (Part 1) The last, or 10th, clause of our Preamble is the most important ideal expressed in our Preamble. It marked a new concept in America - a concept that made The American Legion the greatest force for social betterment in all the history of the United States. Lets examine this. At the close of World War I, America was just emerging from its lusty era of rugged individualism. It was an era when the individual hammered out his own destiny and progress with little or no help from the government. An honest facing of the facts brings out that American society was then a cold society insofar as any organized public hands of helpfulness were concerned. The individual who fell upon evil times was left to private charity which meant mostly the churches and the Salvation Army. There were no public resources or services to help the unfortunates. When the veterans of World War I came marching home, they found the nation utterly unprepared to care for the combat casualties of the war. The wounded, the shell-shocked and the sick were lodged in poor houses, jails, asylums, or what-have-you. Veterans of World War I were much more closely knit than those of World War II. They trained in the same camps and fought on the one great front. Those who came home unscarred were appalled by the plight of their less fortunate comrades. They felt a concern for them and their dependents. This was a new and dramatic action aspect to what the country had known as friendship. This concern formed the bond among the charter members of the American Legion and gave them a great and noble cause for which to fight - the adequate care and protection of their disabled comrades and dependents, the war widows, and orphaned children.
