Langston Hughes High School (LLHS), completed in 2009, is one of the newest and largest constructed
high schools in South Fulton County. Located in Fairburn, Georgia, a suburb of Metropolitan Atlanta, the school
sits adjacent to Renaissance Elementary and Renaissance Middle School. Built to meet the needs of a rapidly
growing community, this state-of-the-art facility is home to over 1900 students grades 9th-12th.
Mission Statement
Our mission is to educate all students to become productive and competitive citizens in an ever changing global society. Each
student will be provided opportunities for academic and social growth which will allow them to reach their fullest potential.
Langston Hughes was a renowned poet, novelist, playwright, short story writer, social activist and columnist. He often
considered to be one of the most important writers and thinkers of the Harlem Renaissance. We honor his legacy by promoting
the intellectual and developmental growth of all students.
Why Choose Langston Hughes?
Talented and Gifted Program (TAG)
Langston Hughes High School’s philosophy for gifted services is that gifted students required specialized educational services
that promote the development and expression of their potential. At LLHS all teachers, administrators and counselors are
involved in the process of servicing and identifying potentially gifted students. Due to this collaborative effort, LHHS will be able
to serve many deserving students with special talents in the gifted program.
The LHHS Gifted Program strives to provide a diverse, high quality educational opportunity through a challenging, unique
program of study with the following servicing options:
•
Seminars – Students have a choice of up to four (4) grade level seminars. Each semester requires a minimum of 12 to
20 hours centered on new topics each quarter as determined by student interest.
•
Directed studies – Junior and seniors may enroll in Directed Studies or an Independent Studies Course instead of a
seminar.
•
Individual projects – With the supervision of the teacher, the student conducts in-depth research as an extension of
a curriculum topic in class.
•
Career Internships – Students participate in internships with local businesses or government agencies.
•
Advanced Placement Courses – which includes: Literature, Language, Biology, Calculus, Statistics, American
Government, Human Geography, World History, American History, Micro-Economics, Psychology, French, Spanish,
Music Theory, Drawing/Portfolio and 3D Design.
•
AVID Program – This program is designed to prepare students academically for four-year college eligibility.
Students that are a part of the AVID Program take an elective class that supports them with instruction, organizational
skills, tutor support and motivational activities that push students to achieve above and beyond.
•
APEX Program – "The APEX Renaissance Academy of Humanities and Sciences seeks to create an exceptional space
within the Hughes community for outstanding scholars and their talents. Our mission is to build multifaceted scholars
who are empathetic to the world and are able to develop solutions for its problems. By the end of the strong
curriculum steeped in the humanities or sciences, our scholars will enter college with a strong sense of self, a keen
awareness of the world, and the academic tools necessary to be successful.”
Talented and Gifted Program (TAG)-continued
While Langston Hughes High School operates on a block schedule day as a comprehensive high school, its non-traditional
approach to educate students includes 9 Academic Pathways.
The purpose of pathways is to give students a personalized learning opportunity to help motivate them to take ownership in their
educational experience. The pathways offered at LHHS provide all students with a challenging learning opportunity that will
ensure that they are prepared for an ever changing global society. All pathways are geared towards a rigorous “College
