April 2017 It seems cliché to say that this school year has absolutely flown by. However, it is now April and we only have two months left in the 2016 - 2017 school year. We are so proud of the students who have been working so hard on their academics and the teachers who have been putting in endless hours of support and planning. Even though only a short time is left, we still have multiple activities and events coming up in April and May. Mr. Justin W. Bledsoe Principal Thornton Kinder Roundup – Our biggest event in April is our annual Kinder Roundup as it helps us to get our future Texans pre-registered for next school year. This year’s Kinder Roundup will be taking place on Tuesday, April 4th starting at 5:00 pm. We really appreciate your help in spreading the word about our Kinder Roundup to families that may not have any children enrolled at Thornton. Guardian(s) will need to provide a current utility bill or lease, birth certificate, shot record, social security card, and a picture ID from one parent. Priority Registration Begins! – Priority registration begins in early April so be prepared for your child to bring home a pre-registration packet. It is very important to fill out the pre-registration card if you plan to return to Thornton next school year. If you do not fill it out, then your child will not have a slot for the 2017 – 2018 school year. The priority registration process is only for students currently enrolled at Thornton Elementary. Please fill out the card carefully on both sides along with any other paper work. Priority registration closes on April 21st. On May 2nd, we will begin regular registration for new students entering our school. New registrations will need to provide a current utility bill or lease, birth certificate, shot record, social security card, and a picture ID from one parent. PTA – Our next PTA meeting will be April 11th at 6 pm in the Thornton cafeteria. At the April meeting we will be voting for next year’s PTA Board, as well as making nominations to our Reconciliation Committee and voting on changes to our existing bylaws. Your Thornton PTA continues to work tirelessly to support our children with opportunities that would not be possible otherwise. Your PTA helps to cover the costs of field trips, as well as night events like the Polar Express Movie Night and the Family Academic Nights. Your support of our PTA also allows us to run a fully funded Watch D.O.G.S. program and day time events like the Bike Rodeo. We also can’t forget to mention the countless hours that our PTA members donate volunteering as chaperones, PALS, and room parents. Simply put, we are so grateful for all of our PTA volunteers and your support of our PTA as none of this would be possible without you. Spring Book Fair – Starting on April 6th our library will be hosting its annual spring book fair. The proceeds raised from this event helps Mrs. Massa to bring in special presenters, book authors, and purchase different technology for the library. We appreciate all your support and hope you will stop by to pick up a few new books. Good Friday and Battle of Flowers – April 14th and April 28th are holidays for our students and staff.
