Stay ahead of fraud by
taking these precautions
Account-to-Account transfer limit
ECU/KCCU offers the Account-toAccount transfer service, which is a great
member benefit.
As a security measure, beginning Nov. 1,
2016, the maximum amount for an
Account-to-Account transfer for the entire
month will be $1,000. You may conduct up
to three transfers during the month, but
they can’t total more than $1,000 for the
month.
Malware protection
Virus protection software is not enough
to protect your personal devices. You also
need to have Malicious Software
Protection — or malware. Use both of
these protections by running scans frequently. You should also regularly monitor
all of your financial accounts with ECU/
KCCU and others.
Check your email sources
Be aware of any email from an unknown
source, or opening an attachment from a
known source until you have confirmed
that the sender really did send the attachment to you.
It only takes seconds for your device to
become infected with malware, which
allows the fraudsters to watch every keystroke you make, therefore exposing your
login information to the secured sites you
visit.
Bank wires are always checked
When requesting a bank wire through
the Message Center, ECU/KCCU will call the
number we have on record for you, not a
number you put in the bank wire message.
You may also fax a signed and dated
bank wire request, or you may make the
request in person. ECU/KCCU will not take
bank wire information over the telephone,
and we will continue to follow this policy.
Be vigilant!
We wish we didn’t have to tighten our
transfer amounts and our bank wire procedures, but fraud prevention requires us to
take these measures to protect you.
We are trying our very best to minimize
the exposure your ECU account has to
fraud.

Botnets
Newest trend for hackers is putting
businesses, consumers at risk
B
otnets might sound like a funny
term, but there’s nothing funny
about the damage they can
inflict on businesses and, in turn,
consumers.
These united mobs of computers have the power to hamper your bottom
line, prompt customer angst,
and deliver an ongoing series of
frustrating, performance-altering
problems. Most often, you won’t
even realize the damage botnets
are causing until it’s too late.
Botnets defined
A growing global problem,
botnets are a collection of
computerized devices under the
control of a hacker. The network
consists of computers that have
been infected with malware that
allows them to be remotely controlled. The
botnet can then be used to send spam emails,
transmit malware and viruses, initiate distributed denial-of-service attacks, and contribute to
cybercrime, which can include snagging sensitive
business data ranging from financial records to
customer data.
Also called a zombie army — given their
interconnected nature of hundreds, thousands,
or sometimes even millions of computers —
botnets are considered one of most significant
threats in today’s digital universe, and their
impact is only growing.
According to a recent cybercrime report,
botnet attacks jumped by 33% in the opening three months of 2016 compared to just the
final quarter of 2015, a rise propelled in part by
an ever-accelerating black market for botnets
among cybercriminals eager to use the botnets
for fraud, data theft, and other illicit, moneymaking schemes.
For businesses of all types and sizes, botnets
can pose a major threat—particularly to small
businesses, which often lack the resources and
expertise to be as digitally vigilant as a largescale company. Botnets have the potential to put
your business functions and productivity at risk.
Botnets can:
• Distribute malware throughout your network, inhibiting computers and compromising important business information.
• Test stolen login details on banking or
e-commerce websites to grab personal or
financial data.
w w w. e c u d a l l a s . o rg
• Withhold, or encrypt, captured information until a ransom is paid (According to
the FBI, hackers captured $209 million
in ransomware payments in the opening
quarter of 2016 alone).
4 steps to thwart botnets
Botnets are an undeniable and growing
risk, but there are
proactive steps you
can take to minimize
your risk of being a
victim:
1. Use a different
password for each
account.
2. Install effective anti-malware
software on your
computer, and keep the software active
and up-to-date.
3. Avoid downloading and running pirated
software.
4. Use professional services to strengthen
protection or rectify problems. HP Care
Packs offer additional protection to
enhance and extend protection on your
computers, and the HP Help Desk delivers 24/7 support for software problems
on any device.
Additional help may be on the way with the
Botnet Prevention Act currently weaving its way
through the U.S. legislature. This bill promises to
create new penalties for selling or providing access to botnets. The bill attempts to both weaken
the swelling black market for botnets, as well as
the illicit activities they are capable of unleashing.
But lobbyists against the bill argue that it could
target and hinder security researchers developing
methods to prevent botnet attacks and are calling on Congress to reject the latest version.
Keeping botnets at bay
Make no mistake, the threats posed by botnets
are real and the potential consequences of a
botnet attack can stymie your business’ ability to
accomplish its goals. However, by taking a few
simple, proactive steps, you can minimize your
risk of being a victim and focus on your business’s performance — not crippling computer
problems.
