WORKSHOP AND DINNER Instructor: Bev Patkau Festival Dinner and Entertainment Evening Thursday, May 21 & Friday, May 22, 2015 Saturday, May 23, 2015 New for 2015! Two Day Workshop 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. at Heritage Park For the first time, this will be a two day workshop. Located in the Heritage Park Gasoline Alley Museum Classroom, this is an intermediate-level workshop. Bev Patkau will share with you her talent and experience to create an amazing quilted portrait. Bring a photograph of your choice and transition it into a quilted masterpiece. Many years ago, Bev saw a pattern in a magazine and in three months she had completed a feathered star quilt, which she gave to her twin sister. That quilt had her hooked and now over 30 years later, she is still creating. Bev loves every aspect of the quilt making process and very rarely goes a day without quilting. Bev has been teaching quilting for many years and loves interacting with her students. She has a business doing custom quilting for clients. Bev is the liaison for the North American Mennonite relief sales, in which she promotes quilting and produces quilts, which are used for fund raising. Bev’s obsession with quilting is a lifelong passion, which she loves to share with others. Darlene’s passion for quilting, and for the Festival, has made her the perfect choice for this honour. She’s been a volunteer at the Park for 25 years working with both the Fall Fair and the Festival of Quilts. Each year during the Festival, Darlene has gone above and beyond to ensure the event ran smoothly and was more visually stunning than the one before. This is our way of showing our appreciation for all her hard work. Darlene’s passion for quilting started over 25 years ago. Her first projects involved piecing and quilting by hand. From there, she made the transition to machine piecing and quilting. She claims that the discovery of the rotary cutter was the point of no return that got her hooked. This stemmed an obsession with the textiles and tools available to make her quilting enjoyable and creative. She joined a small quilting group that met weekly at a local fabric store and with that group there was no end to the ideas that have kept her busy and inspired. However, with all of the modern amenities available, Darlene has a deep appreciation for antique quilts and specifically the workmanship involved in their creation. Currently, she’s working on a series of four block hand appliqué quilts based on antique quilts of the late 19th century. Darlene’s favourite things to work on include hand appliqué, scrap quilts and fun patterns for kids’ quilts. This love for kids’ quilts sparked a passion in Darlene to collaborate with the Chinook Guild of Fibre Arts to start a successful team that makes quilts for sick kids. Road trips to quilt shows, and being involved with the Knotty Quilters allows Darlene to be involved in the community and keeps her mind open for her next inspiration. She feels that part of enjoying your craft includes the sharing of ideas and camaraderie with others. Looking forward, Darlene would like to work toward improving the quality and variety of her machine quilting skills. No doubt there is another masterpiece around the corner. Please join us Saturday, May 23 at 2 p.m. for a special presentation for Darlene Hockaday!
