Oakeley’s House Housemistress: Katherine Jeffery BSc Hons 26 College Road, Clifton, Bristol BS8 3JF Tel (0117) 3157321/320 Email: [email protected] “It has flourished, it is flourishing, may it flourish” As a house we encourage the girls to get involved with the life of Oakeley’s (number 7 on the campus map below) and Clifton College, it is very important that they feel they are able to thrive and be healthy in all that they do. Our motto is about allowing the girls to prosper and bloom throughout their time here in the house however long or short their stay might be. I hope that you will find Oakeley’s to be welcoming and friendly and that you will settle here quickly and form longlasting friendships. It goes without saying that all Oakelians are forever welcome here. The History of Oakeley’s House From 1870 – 1919 The House was known by the name of the Housemaster at the time. During the years 1877-1883 Mr. E.M. Oakeley was the housemaster, then from 1919 onwards it has been known as Oakeley’s. Richard Bland was the last Housemaster of Oakeley’s as a Boys’ House which closed in July 1986. Oakeley’s was then opened as a Girls’ House at the beginning of September (Michaelmas Term) in 1987 with Mrs Fiona Hallworth as the Housemistress and 49 girls. On Wednesday 30th September 1987 it was “officially” re-opened as a Girls House by Baroness Hooper. A plaque was unveiled in the House Hall to mark the beginning of a “new era” in Oakeley’s history. Michaelmas term 1988 began, for the first time, with a complete house consisting of 74 girls. Oakeley’s takes in a mixture of boarding and day-boarding and prides itself in being a very happy and flexible house. WHO YOU NEED TO GO TO WHEN YOU NEED SOMETHING: Housemistress That’s me! My name is Mrs. Jeffery and I teach Economics and Business Studies at Clifton College, as well as looking after the girls in Oakeley’s (academically and pastorally). I also coach hockey and netball teams here at Clifton. I can be found either in my study upstairs (which is accessible from the House Hall) or downstairs in my kitchen (which can be accessed off the hallway by the girls door). House Spouse That is my husband, Mr. Jeffery. He does not teach in the school, but he is a director of his own business. He is around in the house at weekends and evenings. Asst Housemistress Miss Parnell is a Sports Teacher in the School with a specialism in netball. Miss Parnell coaches hockey, netball and athletics throughout the year. She will take great concern over you and is wonderful to talk to if you needed to ask something! She can be found in her flat which is the door just off the hallway by the girl’s door! Miss Parnell is also the 3rd form tutor. Matron Mrs. Elliott is our Matron and she runs all the day to day issues in the House. She makes sure that your linen is clean and regularly changed and looks after your needs when you are feeling unwell. Her surgery is in the middle of the house on the U6th floor right next to her flat. She lives in the house during the week and then goes off duty on Saturday afternoon. She is the Officer In Charge Royal Navy Section Combined Cadet Force and also coaches the Prep School children for athletics and cross country throughout the year. Asst. Matron Mrs Bevens takes over each week on a Monday afternoon while Mrs Elliott is doing CCF, she comes in on a Tuesday afternoon to help me with some admin and covers the house on a Thursday when Mrs Elliott has a well deserved rest! She helps in the same way as Mrs. Elliott and is another very special person you can chat to at any time. Tutors There are tutors who come in for an evening duty each week and all have a tutor group which meets once a week during the school day. My family I have three children: Sophia (7 years old), Seb (5 years) and Samuel (2 years). CLIFTON COLLEGE WEBSITE: Another great source of information is the School Website: https://upper.cliftoncollege.com/ Here you will find the school calendars, policies, information on events such as parents’ evenings, Commem etc. There will also be termly letters from the Head of School, Department Heads and House newsletters. In addition, there is a Parents Portal on the website: https://www.cliftoncollegeuk.com/parents/ Here you have access to your daughters academic progress reports as well as contact information for her teachers and tutor. Brief info before term starts and first few days: If you are joining into the L6th, Dr Tim Greene, Deputy Head of Academic will need your GCSE grades to be sent in as well as your choices for which AS subjects you will be taking. If you are joining into 3rd form there will be subject choices that will also need to be sent into Dr Greene so that we know what subjects your daughter wishes to take. On arriving at Oakeley’s on the Tuesday before term starts, there will be both Mrs Elliott (matron) and Mrs Bevens (assistant matron) on hand to show you where your room is and where things like bedding (duvets, pillows, etc) can also be found. Once you have got unpacked and settled there will be afternoon tea and cake served in Mrs Jeffery’s kitchen located on the ground floor, this will normally be around 4pm. At around 5.30pm there is usually a talk given by the headmaster, Mr Mark Moore in the Redgrave Theatre (number 11 on map) for all new parents. This is just located down the road from Oakeley’s. We advise that you say your good-bye’s to your daughter here so that they are able to attend dinner with the other girls in the house and then we normally have callover later on that evening around 8pm. At this stage both Mrs Jeffery and Mrs Elliott will brief all new girls into the house on a variety of things like fire alarms, how to use the washing machines, etc. There is also the opportunity for the girls to ask any questions they may have. Also, over the coming weeks there are always a variety of questions about rules etc. that we address on a daily basis. These first few days are very busy for all students but especially new students. Mrs Jeffery will allocate a buddy for each of your daughters, this person tends to be someone from the U6th to help show your daughter round the school and to lessons and just to be another person in Oakeley’s that they can ask questions or chat to. As many girls starting in Oakeley’s will find being away from family quite hard initially, we advise that you give your daughter a chance to settle in, so it would be helpful for her to be boarding most nights in those first few weeks and even at the weekend. We normally have a house trip for the first Sunday of term, after chapel. This is something that all girls should be involved with. The L6th tend to have a dinner on the first Saturday evening for them to get to know students from all of the houses, day and boarding, girls and boys, this is an opportunity to branch out and make new friends. Timetable Explanation You will be given a timetable when you first arrive and it will of course take some getting used to moving around the school. CHAPEL There is a Chapel service every morning during the weekday and in the calendar you will see Starred Sunday services. These services are compulsory for all students to attend and parents are also welcome. If for any reason you or your daughter are unable to attend you must write into the Headmaster requesting permission for your daughter to be excused. OPPORTUNITIES AT OAKELEY’S HOUSE: During the year there are many opportunities for you to become involved in House competitions and events. These vary from House Unison Song, through to House fencing, House chess, swimming, sailing and a variety of others! There will be House debates for both the senior and junior members of the house and a House play to organise and put on, which will involve everyone in some form or another! We also try and do at least one trip or outing each term – perhaps to the theatre to see a musical, play or ballet; sometimes to a Theme Park; or ten pin bowling and fish & chips! There is never a dull moment in Oakeley’s and certainly not in Clifton College – the trick is to ensure that you are on time with all your own commitments so that you can become involved in the house; without it affecting your personal obligations – academic, sporting or musical! We also have several events during the year that Parents can come along and see. These are House Part Song, Remembrance Service, Sunday Chapel Services, House Performance Evening and House Play. HOUSE RULES: Our rules are based on common sense, the need to consider others and the development of selfdiscipline. Here is a selection of some of the important rules: • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • All school rules apply as detailed in the Prep Diary. All callovers must be attended in person and you must attend on time! Lights out for 3rd form 9.45/for 4th form 10.00/for 5th form 10.30 You must strictly observe the rules with signing off campus – you must have permission to leave campus whatever year group you are in! Rooms should be kept clean and tidy (all personal sanitary wear should be placed in the correct containers in the shower rooms) Drawing pins and blu-tac must not be used on the walls – or a charge will be made to repair and make good the damage. Posters may be fixed in a non-damaging fashion to any wooden surfaces. Personal kettles and other such electrical appliances are not permitted – all electrical goods must be checked annually by the school works dept. The rules for bedtimes must be strictly observed. Showers and phone calls are not permitted after 10.30 pm, and no phones may be used from 7.30 – 9.00 – prep time – this rule applies to all year groups. No piano practice should be undertaken after 10 p.m. – nor any other instrument practice There must be silence and stillness throughout prep. Breaking out, smoking and drinking are forbidden and will have serious consequences. All visitors please report to the member of staff on duty before proceeding into the House. All visitors MUST be accompanied at all times. Music may be played quietly in rooms except during prep when headphones must be used. The door code is secret and must never be divulged to members of other Houses, or to people from outside the school. FRIENDS Of course you will want to invite friends back to Oakeley’s – it is your home after all. However, we do ask that you sign in friends to the visitors’ book and keep to the public areas (House Hall, 6th form room and Girls Entrance). Boys are also welcome with permission from House Staff on duty. They must be brought in through Mrs Jeffery’s door and signed in the book there. This way we always know who is in the House. This is a legal requirement for us in case of an emergency etc. SANCTIONS There are a variety of sanctions that are given in the House to those who break the House Rules. They are not given unless necessary and everything is done first to avoid giving out these punishments. They are as follows: • • • • • Gating – this is a sanction which enforces you to wear your uniform throughout the day – whether weekend or weekday. It requires you to have a signed sheet witnessed each hour and it prevents you from leaving the campus, the house or visiting the Grubber (school shop). It is given for such issues as serious rudeness or insolence; returning back late from an off/on-campus event; not signing out or asking permission to leave. MED – Marshall’s Extra Duties – this is given for wearing jewellery, nail varnish, turning up late to lessons and callovers etc. Satis – this is a punishment which I link up with the academic staff. It requires you to give a form to your teacher each lesson and a comment is made with regard to your behaviour on it. At the end of the week it is returned to me or your tutor for inspection. You might be given this for constantly disrupting the class or behavioural issues, or to help with academic work. Strike System – strikes are handed out for a variety of offences, ranging from late to bed, non-attendance at breakfast, to a general rudeness to other girls in the house. These strikes can be given out by house staff as well as House Sixths but it must be cleared by a member of the house staff. Four strikes in a week will lead to a house detention on a Saturday night in full school uniform to be overseen by myself or Miss Parnell. Detentions - These are given normally for academically linked problems, although disobedience may warrant this form of sanction. There may be an occasion where something that happened in the House requires a detention but this is something that we try to avoid wherever possible. This is about the limits of sanctions in Oakeley’s. Anything more serious (i.e. smoking, drugs, breaking-out and drinking etc.) is passed straight to the Headmaster or Deputy Head (Pastoral) to be dealt with. We prefer not to hand out sanctions but there are instances where we are left with little or no choice. All sanctions which are given to any pupil in the House will be recorded in the Sanctions Book which is held in my study. OAKELEY’S STUDENTS HAVE RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Your Rights: Personal The students in Oakeley’s have the right to be treated with courtesy and respect by others and to have their personal privacy respected. They also have the right to adopt and celebrate the faith of their own choice and to live in a safe environment. Opportunities – The students in Oakeley’s have the right to develop life skills, including teamwork and leadership. They have the right to be considered by others to represent their peers on the House Council or be considered by the staff for leadership responsibilities. Pastoral – The students at Oakeley’s have the right to expect confidentiality to be respected and maintained (wherever possible, unless the safety of the individual is considered at risk). The students have the right to be welcomed into a family community which is free from intimidation, bullying or rejection. Your Responsibilities: Personal You are expected to respect the rights of others and their property and abide by the House Rules. You are also expected to treat others the way in which you would expect to be treated. The responsibility lies with you to be broad-minded, courteous and compassionate towards others in the House. You are expected to take care of the House property which is in your care during your time at Oakeley’s and to treat it as if it were your own. You are also expected to be enthusiastic, motivated and eager to become involved in the House activities, events and issues. Pastoral You are responsible for ensuring that new members to the House are made to feel welcome and part of the ‘Oakeley’s family group’. You are responsible for ensuring that others are looked after when in need and that they have a ‘friend’ when they need one. SIXTH FORM PRIVILEGES: Being a member of the Sixth form allows you certain privileges over the younger members of the house. It must be remembered that these are not your ‘rights’ though. • • • • • • • You are allowed to wear a skirt suit of any dark colour (navy, black or grey) You may wear black leather boots in Upper 6th in the Michaelmas and Lent terms only You may wear cardigans (navy, black or grey) You may return on a Saturday night by 10.30 (lower sixth) or 11.00 p.m. (upper sixth) ‘Lights out’ – this time is fairly flexible but 11.15 p.m. should be considered as the correct time You may arrange driving lessons within the ‘big break’ times or after school providing you have given a letter of permission from your parents and your Housemistress has given formal permission. Driving cars to school is only allowed with permission from the school – please speak to Mrs Jeffery about this if you intend driving to school. No pupil may give lifts to another for any reason without absolute permission from parents and me. All these privileges may only be accepted by you if you recognise your commitments and responsibilities to the House and to the younger girls who look upon you as role models. We would ask you in return to: • • • • • Abide by the House and College rules To set an example in your dress code To involve yourself in the House activities and events To get to know the younger girls in the House To (occasionally) arrange an evening of entertainment for the House to encourage the younger girls to mix with everyone WHO CAN YOU TURN TO FOR SUPPORT?: There are many people at school who are here to support you whenever needed. These include the Girls in the House, House Staff, House Tutor Team, School Counsellors, The Chaplain and Classroom Teachers. TERM DATES AND EXEATS: These are posted on the School Website: https://upper.cliftoncollege.com/ BEGINNING AND END OF TERM: For the start of every term the house is open at 10am, but possibly earlier for those with international flights. For exeats, half term and end of term the house closes at 5pm. House opening after an exeat or half term is at 5pm. If a flight gets in earlier than this, the JCR is open from 10am. It is courteous to seek permission for an early leave from the Headmaster before tickets have been booked. These dates are made available for up to a year in advance in order for flights to be booked accordingly. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ABOUT OAKELEY’S HOUSE – In alphabetical order BIRTHDAYS Everyone enjoys their birthday and we certainly want to encourage that at Oakeley's House. If you have a birthday during term time then expect to have all the girls in the House sing to you. Birthday cakes are baked by Mrs Bevens and are eaten in my kitchen along with all the girls in your year group. BOYS Boys are very welcome in Oakeley’s, but because there are lots of people living here and in consideration of the girls who perhaps do not want to have boys wandering around the house – we ask that boys are only allowed in the House Hall. There is a unisex loo – not forgetting of course the comfortable sofas and television etc.! CASUAL CLOTHES You may wear casual clothes after the school day ends and jeans are perfectly acceptable at these times. Be careful though that you wait until the official end of the day and not just when your particular lessons finish! Be also warned of the rules for going off campus – there are times you will have to be in school uniform to leave. COMMUNICATION There is WiFi throughout the house. There is a girls’ public telephone on the ground floor of Oakeley’s and this is enclosed for privacy. You may use mobile phones within the rules of the school and House. There is a scanner in my study which you may also use with permission. DOCTORS/DENTISTS APPOINTMENTS We understand that there will be occasions you will need to visit the doctor or the dentist during school time, but we would ask, where possible, you inform us in good time. Where there is an emergency, please ask parents to phone the House and explain. Boarders will obviously be dealt with ‘in-house’ and Matron will be involved. DVDs We have a small selection of these in the House and we lend them out in ‘library style’ – you must sign for them and return them or face being charged for a replacement at the end of term. If you want to bring any of your own, please do but make sure that you have named them clearly and keep them in your possession. ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT It is a regulation that all electrical equipment in the House is checked by qualified electricians to ensure that there is no risk to the girls living in the House. This has to take place on an annual basis. This includes items such as: Hairdryers, laptops etc. We would ask you to avoid bringing hair straighteners or curling tongs as these can be a huge fire risk if left on. EXEATS There are official exeats as listed in the Calendar each term: Michaelmas term you will have two weekend exeats and one half term. Lent term and Summer term there is just the one week half term holiday. Unofficial exeats need to have permission from me and sometimes the Headmaster, depending on the request and the length of exeat you are requiring. It is a good idea to give as much advance warning as possible and certainly at least two days before – anything less than this will probably be refused. Weekend exeats, to stay with friends locally or to return home, require written permission (email is fine) from your parents and the friend’s parents too. This must be arranged by the Friday of the required exeat weekend or it will be probably refused. GAMES KIT Your games kit can be kept in your studies, but please make sure that it is not muddy or in need of a good wash, before putting it away on the floor or in a cupboard! Please keep muddy trainers etc. away from bedstudies. Make sure that all your kit is clearly named or Matron will be asking you to do it with her! GARDEN There is a small front garden which you are very welcome to use for relaxation and peace and quiet during the term. It is a very special place and we would ask you to ensure that no rubbish etc. is left lying around in there. HEALTH CENTRE There is always a doctor or nurse on call at the school Health Centre. If you are unwell, please tell Matron or the person on duty and we will organise for you to be seen. HOUSE HALL This is the large hall where we all meet each day for callover. It is also the social area of the house. There is a TV and sofas and you may entertain your friends (boys and girls) here; providing they are signed in and permission has been given for them to be in the house. It is used for relaxing in too or for reading, playing board games, snooker table, etc. HOUSE SIXTHS There are prefects in the House, the most senior of these are the Head of House and Deputy Head of House. These sixth formers are there to support you and help you in any way they can, but they also have duties to do to ensure that the House runs smoothly. They are able to hand out a sanction (approved by me) if it becomes necessary, but this is rarely the case. They do the breakfast checks each morning, take evening callover, oversee prep time for 3rd and 4th form and also put them to bed in the evening. They are trusted and reliable members of the House who will do all they can to make your time at Oakeley’s great fun! House Prefects are made during the final half term of the year from the Lower 6th pupils. INSURANCE Please make sure that all your valuables have personal insurance – the school do not take responsibility for any items lost, stolen or broken on school premises. It is in your interest to ensure that this is in place. INTERNET WiFi across the whole house. There are also five computers in the House Library which you have access to, during the day and evening. Mobile phone internet connection gadgets are not allowed in school. JCR For the 6th form only, this is an option for socialising. There are occasional events there and it is open all day for the students. KITCHENS There is a kitchen on the first floor and the top floor. The Head of House will organise a rota for each kitchen to ensure that it is always kept clean and tidy. The cleaners will help but they are not there to wash up for you! Whilst we expect you to go to meals in Big School, we understand that you may be a little hungry later on in the evening or perhaps during the afternoon at weekends. Therefore you have access to the kitchens at these times and may use the ovens, microwaves or hobs to cook on, if you wish. The kitchens will be locked at night and during lunchtimes. LAUNDRY All the washing can be done for you in the school laundry. However, there are two washing machines for you if you would like to use it. Within this room there are cubby holes for everyone in the house and there is an iron and ironing board. Dry cleaning can be organised through Matron – it is sent off each Monday morning. LINEN We can supply the pillows, duvets for overseas students and a mattress cover for everyone. However we do ask that you bring two sets of linen – sheet, duvet cover and pillow case – and that you name it all clearly. MARSHALL We have a Marshall in the school, who takes care of discipline issues. He is a lovely man but is strict in his expectations of the pupils and how they behave, etc. Expect to face him if you flout the rules etc. MEALS All meals are taken in ‘Big School’ (our fond name for the dining hall in the main school). MILK ETC. Each day the kitchens are supplied with milk, bread, butter, jam, Marmite, and chocolate spread. There is also tea and coffee available. MOBILE PHONES Mobile phones may be used by the girls but not during the timetabled lessons. If mobile phones are used inappropriately they may be taken from you and kept until Saturday morning. We take the phones away from the 3rd and 4th form during Prep time, and in the Michaelmas term for the 3rd form we take them away overnight, returned each morning. NEWSPAPERS Newspapers are delivered each day – Sunday to Friday for you and are placed in the House Hall. PIANO There is a piano which you will find in the room off the House Hall. Please feel free to practice on it but not after 11 p.m. as it disturbs those who want to have an early night. POCKET MONEY You are responsible for your own money and cards, etc. and you are advised to give large amounts of money to Miss Parnell for safe-keeping in the House Account. We cannot take responsibility for lost money, cards or passports. Passports/Identity cards may be handed into Mrs Jeffery to keep in the safe until you travel again. We suggest that £50 £70 per term is an average amount for Block 2 for pocket money and £20 per week is average for Block 1. Most of you will probably have your own Debit Cards and will be dealing with your own finances, but the offer is there and we do not want large sums of money available to others – so please be sensible. SCHOOL SHOP A good place to start for School Uniform and stationary. We do not stock suits for the 6th Form but can help with all other parts of the school uniform. SHOWER ROOMS There are shower rooms on each floor. 6th FORM ROOM This is the small TV room off the main house hall, which has a priority for sixth formers but on many occasions the other year groups are allowed to watch TV or DVD’s in there as well, as long as they gain permission from a sixth former. SMOKING/DRINKING Both of these are strictly forbidden on school premises, in school uniform or during the school term. If alcohol or cigarettes etc. are found on your person or in your room you will be treated in the same way as if you have been drinking or smoking. STUDIES The 3rd and 4th formers share their studies with others in their year group, in either 4’s or 5’s. Once they reach the 5th and 6th form they are in double studies. Unfortunately there are only two single studies in the whole house and I tend to give priority to the U6th. There should be plenty of room for all your possessions – if not, then you have brought too much with you! Please make sure that all suitcases etc. are put away in the store room after you have unpacked. Each term, you must expect to move rooms and will be asked to clear all your belongings from your room. This is particularly beneficial to the Lower 6th as so many of you come in new at this point and it ensures that you meet lots of friends and get to know everyone. The rooms are often used by visiting students during the holidays and therefore boarders that live abroad are able to store their belongings in the house but for everyone else all your belongings need to go home with you at the end of every term. UNIFORM Please make sure your uniform is hung up each evening and is not left on the floor to become creased. Also make sure that all your uniform is named clearly! It is advisable to purchase shirts that are Easy Care! We do hope that you will be very happy with us over the next few years and please do come and ask if there is anything at all you do not understand. The first term is always the hardest as the 6 day a week routine is tiring, but we try to ensure that you have fun as well as being expected to work hard . Mrs. Katherine Jeffery
