Financed – paid for Early Colonization - Sir Walter Raleigh attempted to start a colony in the Americas and the first one failed - Remember LAND EQUALS POWER - John White 1587, a map maker named John White led 110 men and women to settle Roanoke Island (which is now the Outer Banks of North Carolina) -Settlers were running out of food, so they elected John White to go back to England for supplies - Lost Colony at Roanoke Island - Before John White left, he asked the colonists to leave him a sign if they had to abandon the settlement. C-R-O had been carved in a tree and everyone was GONE! Never found still remains a mystery. White searched for many years and never found them Powhatan Indians - A Powhatan house was called a longhouse made out of saplings and reeds Native Americans Lives In the Four Seasons Spring Picked berries, hunted and fished. -The Powhatan homes, food, clothing and activities all depended on their environment and the four seasons Summer -Powhatan belonged to an even larger group, called, the Eastern Woodland Indians Fall - Werowocomo was a large Indian town used by Indian leaders. It was the headquarters of the Powhatan tribe, led by Chief Powhatan. Winter Uncovering the Past - Artifacts like pottery, tools, and arrowheads have been found in Virginia. They tell us about the people (Native Americans) who lived in Virginia. - Archeologists study these artifacts and dig to recover new information about Native Americans and other people from the past. They live in the Piedmont and Tidewater regions of Virginia. - These tribes include: Coastal Plain o Chickahominy o Mattaponi o Nansemond o Pamunkey o Rappahannock o Upper Mattaponi Piedmont o Monacan - Most of what we know about the Native Americans in Virginia has come from archeological digs and records kept by the English settlers.
