Ankle Pumps:
 This can be done in sitting or lying down.
 Point toes down and back up. Bend your ankles down as far as
possible.
 Perform this exercise 3 times/day for 10 receptions each time.
Heel Slides: (Knee Replacement)
 Lie on your back point knees and toes toward ceiling.
 Gradually bend your leg as far as you are able, while at the same time
keeping your heel flat on the bed.
 Slowly slide your foot down until your knee is flat against the bed
 Perform this exercise 3 times/day 10 repetitions with each leg.

Heel Slides: (Hip Replacement)
 Lie on your back point knees and toes toward ceiling.
 Gradually bend your leg at the hip, (only to 90 degrees at hip), while at the
same time keeping your heel on the bed.
 Slowly slide your foot down until your knee is flat against the bed
 Perform this exercise 3 times/day 10 repetitions with each leg.
Quad Sets:
Lie on your back with your knee straight.
Point your toes toward the ceiling.
Gently tighten the muscles of your thigh, which will straighten your
leg.
Hold this position for 5 seconds then relax.
Perform this exercise 3 times/day 10 repetitions with each leg.
Gluteal Sets:
While lying on your back squeeze the buttocks muscles together as
tight as possible.
Hold this position for 5 seconds then relax.
Perform this exercise 3 times/day 10 repetitions with each leg.

Long Arc Quads:
Sitting in a chair
Straighten right/left knee fully
Lower slowly
Perform this exercise 3 times/day 10 repetitions with each leg.
Short Arc Quads:
With right/left knee over a rolled up pillow
Straighten knee by tightening muscles on top of thigh
Keep bottom of knee on pillow
Perform this exercise 3 times/day 10 repetitions with each leg.

Straight Leg Raises:
Tighten muscles on front of right/left leg
Then lift leg 8-12 inches from surface
Keeping the knee locked
Perform this exercise 3 times/day 10 repetitions with each leg.

Stairs:
If possible, use a handrail for assistance.
Remove carpets/throw rugs from steps and landings.
Ascend/Up: (All GOOD things go UP)
Use hand rails in both hands if possible.
o Better: 2 hand rails (hand rails must be within reach)
o Good: 1 hand rail and a cane/crutch
Cane/crutch remains on the lower/initial step.
Step up with the good leg (non-surgical leg)
Use hand rails and/or cane/crutch to stabilize.
Left body and bad leg (surgical leg) up to meet good leg on stair.
Finally, bring cane/crutch up.
Descend/Down: (All BAD things go DOWN)
Use hand rails in both hands if possible.
o Better: 2 hand rails (hand rails must be within reach)
o Good: 1 hand rail and a cane/crutch
Place cane/crutch on lower step or use both hand rails if there are 2.
Step down with bad leg (surgical leg).
Use hand rails and/or cane/crutch to stabilize.
Finally, step down with the good leg (non-surgical leg) to meet bad leg.
