Directory of Local Scholarships
2016
Through the generosity of the PTA's, school organizations in the Hicksville community, local
organizations and individuals, a substantial number of scholarships are available to graduating
seniors of Hicksville Senior High School. The purpose of these scholarships is to help deserving
students meet the cost of preparing for their futures. Scholarships are not limited to the college
bound and neither are they restricted to outstanding scholars. Students who have conscientiously
applied themselves and have taken advantage of the high school educational opportunities should
carefully review this directory and apply for all financial opportunities to help them achieve the
next step toward their college and career goals.
This Directory presents a brief description of all local scholarships offered to members of the
June, 2015 graduating class of Hicksville High School. They have been numbered for
identification purposes. Please note that there are opportunities for all students. Awards are
available to students planning to attend college, technical school or trade school.
Review the descriptions in the Directory carefully and apply only for those scholarships for
which you meet the eligibility requirements. Follow the instructions given to fill out the
application forms, which are included at the back of this directory. Carefully answer every
question and include all information requested. Detach the application and return it to the

Mattie J.T. Stepanek – “Reflections of a Peacemaker” Scholarship. Amount $200.00.
Mattie J.T. Stepanek was a poet, a peacemaker, and philosopher – all by the age of 13.He
was born with a rare and fatal neuromuscular disease, which crippled his body, but
amazingly not his spirit. More than anything he wanted to contribute to peace. He went on
(before his death) to co-write a book with ex-president Jimmy Carter entitled “Just Peace
a Message of Hope.” His many poems about love, life, peace, and dreams are published in
the Heartsongs collection of books. Mattie’s “Journey Through Heartsongs” made the
New York Times Best Selling List. In People Magazine (December 2004), Mattie is
honored and remembered (page 190) along with Tony Randall, Jack Parr, Bob Keeshan,
(Captain Kangaroo), Ann Miller and Geoffrey Beene; amazing company for such a young
boy. Mattie had made a video time capsule with some other teens who have/had muscular
dystrophy. Mattie’s capsule said – “What matters most to me is that I wake up each day
and take a breath. I appreciate watching the sun rise and set, knowing that they are gifts,
not things to be assumed.”
Criteria: This scholarship is open to all graduating seniors attending Hicksville High
School.
1. Write a 200 word biography about Mattie J.T. Stepanek
2. Write a poem or a 500+ word essay about one of the following thoughts:
a. “Let Peace Begin With Me…”
b. “There are those whose lives affect all others around them, quietly touching
one heart who in turn touches another reaching out to ends further than they
would ever know.”
c. “Remember to play after every storm.”

Fernando Bengoechea – Photography/Art Scholarship – We are all connected.
Amount $200.00. Fernando Bengoechea was an Argentine born photographer and artist.
His work has appeared in Vogue, Elle Decore, Town and Country, and the Oprah
magazines. At the young age of 39, he was killed in the 2004 Tsunami while vacationing
in Sri Lanka. According to his friends and colleagues he was adventurous, exuberant, and
deeply intuitive with a zest for life. I did not know Fernando Bengoechea personally, but
his story and his art continue to have a presence in my life. He not only put a face and
story to the thousands of victims lost and left homeless in the wake of the Tsunami, but
the importance of living in the moment. How small the world really is and that our
greatest resource is each other.
Criteria: This scholarship is open to all graduating seniors attending Hicksville High
School.
1. Photograph, draw, or paint a picture or subject, which potentially could affect another
person here or around the world. Title it, “We Are All Connected.”
2. Explain the story of your picture in a poem or 500+ word essay and the inspiration
behind it.
