Division as Repetitive Subtraction

Lesson 28: Division as Repetitive Subtraction
Objective
Students will be able to divide using repetitive subtraction.
Warm up
Ask the students to put 12 rings on MathLine. Explain that they are going to divide a larger number into
smaller, equal sets by using repeated subtraction.
Explain that we are going to divide 12 into groups of 2 by subtraction.
Start taking away groups of 2, one at a time.
When the rings are all used up, explain 12 ÷ 2 = 6.
There are 6 groups of rings and each group has 2 in it.
Student Page
Read the Practice section aloud as students read it silently. Encourage them to model the problem using
their MathLines.
Test Preparation
Write this problem on the chalkboard:
Sandra has 15 stuffed animals. She wants to divide them between 4 friends and herself. How
many will each get? Draw the rings on the MathLine.
1st draw the total number of stuffed animals.
Now draw the rings after they are divided.
Extension
Tell the students that all numbers do not divide equally. Show them 13 ÷ 4 = _____
In this problem there is 1 left over and we call it a remainder.
