Warm-Up
• Turn-in Excretory System & Unit 8 Introduction
• What are the major systems of the excretory system?
• Urinary
• Digestive
• Respiratory
• Integumentary
• Identify the function of the excretory system
• Gets rid of waste
Today’s Task
• I will investigate the RESPIRATORY system
Today’s Goal
• We can identify the function of the respiratory system.
• We can identify the structure included in the respiratory
system.
• We can identify organelles with similar functions to the
respiratory system.
• We can identify advantages and limitations of models.
• We can explain adaptations of the respiratory system.
Respiratory System
Function:
•Breathe (gas exchange)
• Inhale Oxygen (O2)
•Gets rid of waste
• Exhale Carbon Dioxide (CO2)
Organelle:
Cell Membrane –
allows things to
enter & exit
Nasal Cavity
Trachea
Lungs
Bronchi
Alveoli
Diaphragm
Respiratory
System
Identify the function of the respiratory system.
Compare this function to a cell organelle and
explain.
Function:
Breathe in O2
Get rid of CO2
Cell organelle:
Cell Membrane
both exchange gases
Adaptations of the Respiratory System
•Fish have gills so they can breathe under water
Diseases of the Respiratory System
Explain how people and fish breathe.
People:
Lungs
Breathe air
Fish:
Gills
Breathe underwater
•Materials:
•1 cup
•2 strips of
duct tape
•Scissors
•Straw
•Small balloon
•Large balloon
Build a Model
1.Use the scissors
to poke a hole in
bottom of the
cup
2.Insert the straw
Build a Model
1. Place the small balloon on
the end of the straw
inside the cup.
2. Wrap a piece of duct tape
around where the balloon
and straw meet (air tight)
3. Cut the top off of the
large balloon, and dispose
top portion in the trash
Build a Model
1. Stretch what’s left of the
large balloon over the
opening of the cup
2. Wrap duct tap around
the straw and hole you
cut in the cup
(air tight)
3. Gently pull up and down
on the large balloon to
operate the model
Build a Model
Respiratory System Reflection
•Identify the function
•Compare an organelle & explain
•Explain an adaptation
