TIMING ERROR
MEANS YOUR STUDY
MAY NOT BE WORKING
AS YOU INTENDED CAUSING
SPURIOUS RESULTS. GUARANTEE
YOUR ABILITY TO REPLICATE:
QUICKLY AND EASILY CHECK YOUR
OWN ACCURACY. WORKS WITH ANY
COMPUTER-BASED STUDY, EEG, FMRI OR EYE TRACKER.
1. WHAT – If you are a psychologist,
neuroscientist or vision researcher who reports
timing accuracy in units of a millisecond, then
it’s likely your timings are wrong! This can
lead to replication failure, spurious results and
questionable conclusions. The Black Box ToolKit
lets you quickly and easily check your own timing
accuracy in terms of stimulus presentation;
synchronization with other equipment; and RT
accuracy.
2. WHY – Modern hardware may be faster but
millisecond timing accuracy is becoming harder
to achieve: 'millisecond precision' does not equal
'millisecond accuracy'. Precision simply means
timings are reported in units of a millisecond,
not that they are accurate! Whatever experiment
generator you use, it only knows when it
requested a stimulus be shown and not the time
when it physically appeared.
3. HOW – Currently self-validation of timing
accuracy can only be done quickly and easily
with a Black Box ToolKit. This acts as a
programmable virtual human that can detect and
respond to stimulus events with sub-millisecond
accuracy. It enables you to check the accuracy of
your own paradigm whilst running in-situ on your
own equipment by using external sensors, TTL
I/O and your own response devices.
To improve replication and enhance credibility
all researchers should self-validate, or selfcertify, their own studies in terms of millisecond
presentation, synchronization and response
timing accuracy.
Not ready for a Black Box ToolKit just yet. Our
range of standalone USB response pads, voice
keys and USB TTL event marking modules can
all help improve your timing in any experiment
generator!

TURNING NEUROLOGY RESEARCH
INTO RECOVERY — FASTER.
THAT’S THE DIFFERENCE
BETWEEN PRACTICING
MEDICINE AND LEADING IT.
At Houston Methodist, we are pioneering research in neurostimulation
and neuroregeneration to restore mobility and cognitive function in
patients with neurological disorders. In both science and clinical trials,
we are broadening our understanding of stroke, Parkinson’s disease,
Alzheimer’s disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), brain tumors,
epilepsy, and spinal disorders, and getting new technologies and
treatments to our patients — faster.

Research Assistant/Post-doc Research Associate
(two posts)
Salary: Research Assistant: £26,829 - £28,452
Post-doc Research Associate: £29,301 - £31,076
(with progression to £38,183)
Job Ref: A49795R
Two scientist positions (Research Assistant or Post-doc Research
Associate) are available in the lab of Michael Schmid at the Institute
of Neuroscience of Newcastle University to investigate brain circuits
underlying constructive visual perception in the visual system. To this
end the new team members will develop a research agenda that is in line
with the aims of the Schmid lab. This will imply designing, conducting
and analysing electrophysiology/fMRI/optogenetics experiments in
experimental animals (rodents or non-human primates) trained to work
on visually based behavioural tasks. You will integrate the experimental
findings into conceptual framework and summarise the work in the form of
manuscripts suitable for publication in high-rank neuroscience journals and
assist with the supervision of students and teaching. There is the possibility
to pursue a PhD degree in the course of the Research Assistant position.
Applicants for the Research Associate position should possess a PhD
in systems or cognitive neuroscience and have prior experience with
electrophysiology, fMRI or optogenetics in experimental animals or
a strong background in brain connectivity analysis (e.g. using DCM).
A BSc or MSc in Neuroscience, Psychology, Physics or related quantitative
disciplines is essential for appointment at Research Assistant level.
Essential qualities of the applicant are a general scientific aptitude and creativity,
affinity with programming and the commitment to a career in science.
The facilities in Newcastle are outstanding to carry out this work, including
access to a primate-dedicated, fully functioning vertical 4.7T MRI magnet
and 256 channel electrophysiology setups. The lab is currently setting up
to include marmosets in their research portfolio. There are opportunities
to collaborate locally with the labs of Prof. Alex Thiele on 2-photon
microscopy, with Prof. Chris Petkov on crossmodal aspects and remotely
with Prof. Karl Friston of UCL on brain connectivity assessment.
Newcastle is a thriving city in the Northeast of England with about
300.000 citizens, a rich cultural life, including a variety of theatres,
museums and outstanding schools, in addition to easy access to
historic landmarks and the North Sea.
Tenable for two years in the first instance with the possibility of a further extension.
Informal enquiries should be directed to [email protected] or
visit http://research.ncl.ac.uk/schmidlab/
The Institute holds a silver Athena SWAN award in addition to the
University’s silver Athena SWAN award in recognition of our good
employment practices for the advancement of gender equality, and
the University holds the HR Excellence in Research award for our work
to support the career development of our researchers. We are also a
member of the Euraxess network.

]PZPVUHUU\HSYL]PL^ZVYN࠮=VS\TL࠮6J[VILY
Co-Editors: 1(U[OVU`4V]ZOVU, New York University, and Brian A. Wandell, Stanford University
The Annual Review of Vision Science reviews progress in the visual sciences, a crosscutting set of disciplines that
intersect psychology, neuroscience, computer science, cell biology and genetics, and clinical medicine. The journal
covers a broad range of topics and techniques, including optics, retina, central visual processing, visual perception, eye
movements, visual development, vision models, computer vision, and the mechanisms of visual disease, dysfunction, and
sight restoration. The study of vision is central to progress in many areas of science, and this new journal explores and
exposes the connections that link it to biology, behavior, computation, engineering, and medicine.
