The Marsden Christian School, which has been running
for 17 years at the Lifepoint Church in One Tree Point

dropping to a low number.
Roger Pyle of Lifepoint Church said at the end of
the year the roll was just 15 and this was not enough
children to justify employing a teacher. Mr. Pyle said
he understood most of the former students of the school
were now travelling daily to Christian Schools in

children were now attending Pompalier College.
The school had been started by a group of local parents

He said many people have commended him on his campaign and had cut out

Ben is also now suggesting that a crematorium could be built at the proposed
new cemetery.
“Some people are saying to me they are not bothered because they intend to
be burned but I think it is important for family members to have somewhere to
go and remember the person who has died. I went back to Holland for a visit
recently. Both my parents and my sister were cremated and they just threw
their ashes on a lawn. There was nowhere for me to visit in their memory. My
brother was killed in a car accident years ago before we moved to Ruakaka.
He was buried in a little cemetery near Warkworth and I often stop off to visit
his grave and say a little prayer.”
The Whangarei District Council has now extended the time for comment on
its proposed new Ruakaka Structure Plan until 20 March and Mr. Wortelboer
said he has extra forms available at his son Tim’s Gas Point Service Station at

Leesa wasn’t sure last week which individual members of the Warriors would be

Asked how this year’s organization of the big event was going Leesa said,
“Wonderful. We have got close to 1,200 entries already and there are only about
10 camp sites left at the camping ground. A lot more families are coming and many
of them have decided to stay up here for the whole week rather than just for the

The Ruakaka composing plant
The system of composting Brian Smith uses at his
plant located behind the truck weigh station and fuel
pump on Marsden Point Rd. is known as CTI because
the idea was purchased from the American company
- Compost Technology Incorporated.
Mulched green waste, food waste and septic tank
sludge is pushed into long white tubes of plastic wrap
by a specially adapted machine. The tubes have pipes
running through them, which allow air to be pumped
in.
Brian explains the air keeps the microbes in the waste
material alive. In fact, the temperature of the compost
can be controlled by the amount of air, which is
pumped in and the amount of microbial activity this
generates.
The process takes around three months with the
temperature in the tube kept at around 72 degrees
centigrade. The compost is then put through a big
Brian Smith
sifting machine and stacked up ready for sale. Last
year Brian sold 1200 tonnes to Northland maize
growers who supplement the chemical fertiliser they
use with this cheaper alternative.
Marketing is an area composting operators need to
work on says Brian. Their national body Compost NZ
is starting to think about this.
“The chemical companies send representatives
around to farmers. They take soil samples and tell the
farmer how much of each kind of fertiliser he needs. Brian Smith at his composting plant.
We should be doing this too. Compost should be seen
as part of a fertiliser programme. Chemical fertilisers white caterpillars or as few as are needed. He is only

Walkers pause en route to take in the view.
Approximately forty people took the opportunity to walk along the proposed coastal
track from Waipu Cove towards Langs Beach on Sunday 1 February, an event, which
was organised by the local branch of the Royal Forest and Bird Protection Society.
Prior to the walk André La Bonté, who owns 36 acres of land with 250 metres of
waterfront along the route, spoke to the group. He said his land extended right down
to the mean high water mark and he had no intention of selling any of this to the
Whangarei District Council. However, he did not object to people walking over his
land so long as they were respectful of it and has erected styles for this purpose.
André said, in the past, he has picked up dog droppings and rubbish, including
bottles and babies’ nappies, from his waterfront land. He has also had fences broken
and has had uncontrolled dogs chase his cattle.
André said if there is to be a public walking track along the coast here, people will
need to be responsible otherwise he would ban access.
Alan McKenzie, who also owns land along the route, and who has for several years
been working to re-establish a public right of way along the coast which he says was
taken for granted in the days when his children were growing up, handed out maps
of the route and pointed out some of the obstacles to public access.
The Sunday walk went as far as a public access strip opposite Waterman Drive (on
Cove Rd.) and passed in front of a property where the esplanade reserve, according
to survey pegs, narrows to just 10 metres of very steep coastal cliff, making walking

Further south there are more barriers to public access in the form of fences without
styles and structures, which appear to have been built over the public land.
The Whangarei District Council has put aside $59,000 in its 2008/2009 annual plan
to survey the boundaries of the esplanade reserve.

A very diverse and interesting life
An interview with Enid Austen, former Deputy Principal of Whangarei Girls High School and a long
time resident of Bream Bay
Enid Austen phoned to say she hadn’t received the last edition of the Bream Bay
News in her letterbox. She wanted to read it because she has lived in Bream Bay
for 44 years and has a keen interest in what is going on here.
Enid is a retired schoolteacher and was head of Social Studies and Deputy Principal
at Whangarei Girls High School. She retired in 1970 after a thirty - year teaching
career that began as a primary teacher during the Second World War in Taranaki
and which took her to the Waikato, London and Warkworth prior to Whangarei.
She moved to Bream Bay in 1965 after she married a widowed farmer, Eric
Austen.
“I loved the farm life”, Enid said. The farm was at the top end of Brooks Rd. in
Waipu. Eric had three children, aged from seven to 12 at the time of their marriage,
and although she has no children of her own, Enid became stepmother to these
three and retains a close relationship with them.
Eric had come to New Zealand after the war to visit a cousin who had married a
New Zealand ex prisoner of war and was so impressed he stayed. He had been a
crop farmer in Kent and had spent the war years in an advisory role helping to boost
England’s food production.
“He was always an innovative person”, said Enid. “After the war he turned his

and blandness of war and would want something beautiful again to grow in their
gardens.”
The Brooks Rd. farm was both a dairy and beef operation with a sharemilker looking
after the dairy side of things. Seven and a half years into their marriage, Eric became
ill with cancer and died after an 18 - month illness. Enid stayed on at the farm for
another 8 years as an advisory trustee under the Public Trust’s Management.
Eric had made a section he owned at Ruakaka Beach over to her in his will and in
1980 Enid built a house there and moved to the beach. The section was one of the

wife) and the children could stay. He would come down on the weekends while he
continued to work on the farm. Unfortunately things don’t always work out as you
plan them”, said Enid.
After the Bream Bay Drive area was subdivided (in the early 1950s) it took some

Enid remembers quantities of sand were brought in and compacted and drains were
laid to solve the problem.
Peat was spread on top of the sand so the new householders could establish
gardens.

From the time she moved to Bream Bay, Enid has been involved in this
community.
She ran the Waipu Library for close to 15 years through the late 1980s and most
of the 1990s. She took over from Bertha Gates who had been in charge there for
many years and was retiring. Enid had some experience. When she was teaching at
Warkworth she was given the task of getting the school library into order. This had
been completely chaotic.
“Pollyanna’s Jewels sat next to The Teaching of Modern Languages.” Enid
remembers.
“I got a book about the Dewey system and some help from a local librarian.”
She worked on this for the full three - and - a - half years she was at that school.
She spent 13 years as a volunteer with the Bream Bay St. John Ambulance.

Brooks Rd. farm suffered a serious tractor accident.
“I didn’t have a clue what to do. Luckily the wife of the sharemilker was a nurse and
she managed to keep him alive until help arrive,” Enid said.
She was persuaded to stay on with the St. John service as a volunteer.
“I thought I could answer the phone for them but I found myself riding in the
ambulance and going to all sorts of strange places, down in gullies, in ditches in the
middle of the night.”
She was on the board of managers of the Waipu Presbyterian Church, involved in
a Waipu Red Cross group and helped with weekly care and craft sessions the CMA
(Civilian Maimed Association) ran at the Ruakaka Recreation Centre.
She held executive positions with the Northland University Women’s Association
and in this capacity travelled to meetings around New Zealand.
“Actually, apart from attending one or two short courses I never set foot in a
university”, said Enid.
She had studied for her Bachelor of Arts degree by correspondence while teaching

soldiers and reading and I decided to channel my reading into study. It was boredom
really that lead me to study for a degree.”
Enid did some relieving at the Waipu District High School shortly after her retirement
but says she didn’t really enjoy this experience.
“ I should have known what I was getting into. Some senior, very respected teachers
had retired from the girls’ high school and then came back as relievers and had
all kinds of problems with the kids playing up. As deputy principal I was used to
walking into a room and having silence. Relief teaching is not the most rewarding
form of teaching.”

Enid is a passionate traveller and has been on many tours. She prefers going with
university continuing education groups because of the “very knowledgeable people”
who organise these.

colleagues each took a year of absence from their jobs and went to England.
“We hadn’t planned to be there for the Coronation. We had purchased our tickets
before the King died. But it was something to be in Hyde Park when Queen Elizabeth
11 was crowned.”
They went cycle touring around South West England. There were signs warning
cyclists not to ride down the hills because they were so steep.
“We each had 30 - pound packs on our backs. We only tried riding down the steepest
grades once.”
They went hiking in Ireland and cycling in Belgium and Holland.
“We met some interesting people.”

Eventually the caretaker came and unlocked a gate and explained they had to keep
the gates locked otherwise the children just walked out. At another school all the
woman teachers were escorted to their bus stops.”
“On the other hand, there were some other very well run schools. I remember one
fantastic school run by this wonderful woman. She never raised her voice but the
school was one of the best run I have ever been in.”
Enid attributes her passion for learning and adventure and commitment to community
service to her parents.
“I had a very unusual upbringing. My father was First Assistant and in charge of the
boarding hostel at New Plymouth Boys’ High School, so I grew up in the middle of
a boys’ school. My mother was a real gem. She wasn’t on the payroll but she was
much more use to my father than any matron could have been. She would mother
any of the boys who were feeling a bit homesick.”
“We had access to the school library and a number of interesting people who were
invited to the school to speak would stay with us.

Looking back Enid says, “I have had a very diverse life, a very interesting life.”
Enid is 87 - years - old and a living advertisement for positive ageing. She walks on
the beach most mornings – from Ruakaka half way down to Uretiti and back and is
currently considering going on a trip to the Marquesas islands.

Wilson Dam 90 percent full
Andrew Venmoor of the Whangarei District Council’s water services division
said there have been no problems with Bream Bay’s water supply through the
dry spell as The Wilson Dam is 90% full.
“We are still taking water from the Ruakaka River. If it stayed dry for too
much longer the levels would be getting too low but heavy rain is predicted
for later this week.”
Mr. Venmoor said a pump broke down on the Ruakaka River a few weeks
ago and water was taken from the Wilson Dam.
“We have been using it intermittently.”
A new treatment system, which will screen organic matter from the Wilson
Dam water, is due to come on stream in June. This organic material interacts
with chlorine to form by products, which can be damaging to human health
if consumed over a long period. However, Mr. Venmoor said the Wilson Dam
water is only being used for short periods and it is long-term use that would
be objected to by the Health Department.
The Wilson Dam is also a backup for Waipu’s water supply. However the

Theft prompts Search and
Rescue alert
Simon Ellison of Ruakaka Kayaks has had one of his kayaks stolen.
On Thursday 22 January he hired out a kayak to a young Polynesian man
aged, Simon thinks, “about 17 or 18”.
The young man paddled off up the Ruakaka River and that was the last Simon
saw of him or the kayak.
Simon called Search and Rescue thinking the young man may have had an
accident. However, as no one was reported missing the conclusion was that
this was a theft rather than a boating mishap.
The kayak is a Viking Sit On coloured yellow and green. The young man also
made off with a blue lifejacket.

Don’t ring the ambulance
station if you need
medical help
People are apparently turning up at the St. John Ambulance Station in Tamingi St.,
Ruakaka and asking for treatment.
Station manager Barbara Lock said she wants people to stop doing this, as there is a

from the ambulance station, at an event in the area, or even just down at the shops,
etc. If they are unwell and need an ambulance, they have now delayed time to get
care for themselves, whereas if they rang 111, an ambulance would be on its way.”
Another practice Barbara wants to discourage is people phoning the station to tell
St. John staff about someone who is not well.
She said, “If they ring us, we may have a chat about the person’s condition and then
to get an ambulance to attend, they will have to ring 111 and give all the information
over again as all our jobs have to go through our communications centre. Once
again there will be a time delay for treatment. We do need to see the patient to treat
them and can’t just act on descriptions of the problem over the phone.”

The Best Advice on Pain Relief
Pain is the body’s signal that something is not right but
our response to pain, and our ability to put up with it, is as
variable as human nature itself. It depends on how bad the
pain is. It also depends on what we know about why the
pain is occurring, how long we think we will have to put
up with it, what medicines we know are available and what
our past experiences are with pain relief treatments.
Pain has many causes, eg injury, illness, disease, hormonal

it is a one-off headache, or it is period time, or the pain
is from a physical injury such as muscle strain, then
treatment can be straight forward. “We have available in
the pharmacy various kinds of pain relief medicines” say
Self Care pharmacists “but because they work in different
ways, and because some people can have problems with
some products, it is important to talk with us to establish
what is best for you. Our role is to ensure you receive the
medicine that is most appropriate for your condition, so the
pain goes quickly and you do not react to the medicine.”
7KHUDQJHRISDLQUHOLHYHUPHGLFLQHV\RXZLOOÀQGLQ\RXU
local pharmacy includes:
Paracetamol - usually for mild to moderate pain. It stops
pain messages being passed to the brain. As well, it helps
lower body temperature in fevers. It is the most suitable
pain reliever for children, and specially formulated liquid
medicines are available for them. Only the exact dose
indicated on the label should be given and doses should
not be continued beyond 24 hours, especially for children,
unless advised by your pharmacist or doctor. See the
Children’s Pain & Fever fact card for more information
about treating children’s pain.
Codeine – usually reserved for stronger pain such as dental
pain, period pain or migraines. It acts by stopping pain
signals in the brain. Codeine products often also contain
other pain relief medicines such as paracetamol or aspirin.
Use for three days or more at a time can cause constipation
in some people.

and dental pain. For injuries due to sprains and strains,
LQWKHÀUVWKRXUV16$,PHGLFLQHVVKRXOGQRWEHXVHG
Instead, Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation (RICE) are
the best way to ‘kick-start’ the healing process. NSAIs can
be used after that. Aspirin should not be given to children
under twelve years of age. People who have asthma or
allergic conditions, or have had a stomach or duodenal
ulcer, should check with their doctors or pharmacists
before taking NSAIs.
There are some important considerations to make when
taking medicines for pain. Carefully read the instructions
on the packet and take only the recommended dose.
Taking more than that can lead to serious problems. “As
pharmacists, we know how effective these pain relievers
are so it is good to have available from our pharmacies
a wide range to cover most short-term pain conditions.
However, if we believe the underlying condition resulting
in the pain is of a more serious nature, or long-term pain
relief is needed, we will encourage you to see your doctor”
say Self Care pharmacists.
Pain relievers often are combined with other medicines for
different conditions, for example cough and cold products.
“We advise people always to check the ingredient lists when
buying medicines, which will stop you from doubling-up.”
For women who are pregnant or breast-feeding, “we will
advise you about what pain medicines are safe to take, so
make sure you ask to speak to your Self Care pharmacist.”
Finally, see the Self Care fact card on Pain Relief for
additional information.

Year End 2008. The last meeting in December saw members sit down to a grand
luncheon at the Recreation Centre. Entertainment was provided by the Waipu Ladies
Ukelele Band.
The years actrivities have been recorded scrap book style in an album, put together
by Carol, using her scrapbooking skills. It is amazing the places explored and the
antics of some.

New Zealand women have is inspirational to her and she would like to adopt similar
chances for her former homeland.
Now living in One Tree Point, married to a kiwi she is grateful to experience the

In February it is envisaged the new Ruakaka based Skylark Tours will tell us of the

Year End. I unfortunately missed the end of year get together which is always full
of fellowship and fun.
The reason was good though ,for my wife and I to help our youngest son look after
his 3 yr old boy, after the arrival of our youngest grand daughter Stella Mara.(born
by caesarian section 17 November 2008). Stella of course means star. Mara is the
Dalmatian name for Mary after her great grandma who lives in Dargaville.
Those of you familiar with Howick in Auckland will now that the Catholic church
there is Stella Maris (The Star of the Sea).
Year Start 2009: The group ably led by Wendy our convenor, manned a set of displays at the Waipu Games on Jan 1. Many availed themselves of the opportunity to
ask about persuing their family history. Northland names:
I was intrigued to read an article in the Advocate outlining some of the ancestors of
the Going family. What really caught my eye was the fact that John and Elizabeth
GOING came out to New Zealand on the Caduceus.
This was the ship my grandfather arrived on in 1859 He married Elizabeth Holman
who came with her parents Josiah and Elizabeth Holman on this vessel.
So I checked the passenger list and there was listed a John and Eliza and children
John E,Laura E,Henry, Jesse Florence and Patrick Goring.

sailor)
Incidentally my grandfather married twice. The second time he married my Grandmother Eliza Brown (26yrs) George William was 56 yrs.
Next Meeting: Will be at 11.00a.m at the Waipu Caledonian Society Hall off St
Mary’s Rd .B.Y.O.lunch.
Annual subs of $10.00 are due (plus $2.00 entry fee)
Morning tea or coffee provided
Topic: Show and Tell or bring your family History queries for help on how to
progress.

Reggae Band 1814
1814, a seven -piece reggae band from Whangaroa and
Kerikeri, will be live at the Ruakaka Tavern on Friday
13 February.
Patu Colbert, who formed the band in 2004, describes
the music as having “a funky, R’n’B, Roots, Reggae
feel to it.”
The name 1814 was taken from the year the Gospel
arrived at Oihi, in the Bay Of Islands when Missionary,

“This is the inspiration behind delivering a message of
peace, love and unity to all people throughout the land”
says the script on the 1814 website.
Patu formed the band in 2004 with son’s Shaun and
Jimmy and began playing in Church and supporting
community events around Northland. As the popularity
of the band grew, more whanau members were added

community circus group has come up with one.
Circus tutor Achmed Abman explained after an end of
year show for the residents of the Ranburn Resthome
and Hospital, the group got together for an end of year
celebration at the Waipu Pizza Barn. Pre - warned
about the circus visit staff at the Pizza Barn had a table
reserved with the sign Circu Waipu on it. One of the
circus children read this as circool and the name was
born.
Achmed said he will work on a new show for 2009 and
the group will be out and about fundraising for more
equipment.
Achmed has a long list: unicycles, a walking globe,
materials for a banner, costumes, a stereo, materials
to make stilts.
He said his vision is that the Circool Circus should
become a local icon.
“We will use drama music and circus “to develop our
youth so boredom or nothing to do is for those young
adults a strange word.”
Achmed acknowledges sponsorship already received
from: Scavengers, The Waipu Lions, The Waipu Fire
Brigade, the Waipu Business Association and the
Bream Bay News.
The circus will be celebrating the second
anniversary since its formation in May.
“Our baby learned to walk”, said Achmed.
