For Your Information
Greeters Duties: Please be ready at 6.50 pm to greet
members as they arrive for our Supper Meeting and ensure that all new members are being looked after. (If you
are coming for dinner, it would be good if you could be
there a few minutes before to greet folk). Please provide
a generous plate of food for supper. Greeters please
stay behind after the meeting to help tidy up and lock the room.
If exchanging your duty please re-arrange this with your substitute
as the names will be listed in the bulletin from the list circulated at
the beginning of the Lions’ year. This saves doubling up on people
who have done other’s duties and end up doing their own as well.
Raffle: Each of the two rostered members provides a $10’ish
raffle prize and is responsible for selling and drawing the raffle.
The secretary has the raffle books.
Subscriptions: Remember that these will be due at the beginning of July. Until 30 September the subscription is $75.00 but
when that date has passed, the sub rises to $85.00. If you
have internet banking you can pay in this way—check with
Sandra Scott for the account number
Birthday Presents: Please remember to bring a birthday
present for the birthday box. (Around $10.00 or so) When
you bring it, please get it checked off with Jan Rowe

What a busy month we had in February.
LCIF: The Lions Lifeline That Pulls Millions to
a Better Life
The 21st birthday party went off really well.
Thanks to Joan and her social committee for organizing such a wonderful evening. The auction was a lot of
fun and over $130 was raised. Thanks to Sharon for singing
Happy Birthday in Arabic.
Sadly Art in the Garden had to be postponed due to the
weather on that day but hopefully 3rd March the weather will
be kind do us. Many thanks to Kathy and her projects committee for organising this inaugural event. Thanks to Julie for
printing of all the flyers advertising the event and printing off
the programme to be used for the day. Also thanks to Doreen
for dropping off the invitations to Friends of Lions.
Again thanks to Kathy and her projects committee for a great
job done at the A&P Show sausage sizzle. All the members
looked so lovely in their white polo shirts and aprons. The
sausage sizzle was a sell-out.
Also after the show the members that were still there sat
round and had a couple of drinks at the bar. It was most enjoyable. I must again thank Kathy and Rita for supplying wine
and nibbles. The food was yummy.
Also thanks to the members that helped at the engagement
party and wedding at Fifeshire.
In 1943 a US bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean. Louis Zamperini survived
the crash, but his ordeal had just begun. Adrift in the vast open sea, dodged
the strafing of enemy airplanes and ingeniously patched his deflating life raft.
Captured and cruelly tortured, he was driven to the limits of endurance. His
incredibly inspiring story is told in the bestseller “Unbroken”, by Laura Hillebrand.
Zamperini’s story is so captivating because he was extraordinarily tough, and
resourceful. He was one-of-a-kind. We know that we could never do what he
did. We probably don’t even know anyone who could. We are human, not super-human. Zamperini survived through his own wits and courage, but unless
we have help, we probably are no match for disaster, misfortune and maladies.
I was reminded of our shared vulnerability when I visited the World Health Organization last year and met with groups dedicated to curtailing measles, a virus microscopic in size but powerful enough to cause blindness, brain damage,
hearing loss and death. LCIF has partnered with the Bill & Melinda Gates
Foundation and others to shield millions of children from measles. LCIF is Lions’ worldwide foundation and it takes a village of Lions to fight diseases and
other calamities. Lions working together through LCIF bring sight to the blind,
help victims of disasters get back on their feet, empower youths with life skills
and perform countless other good deeds on a large scale.
As you know from reading or watching the news, the world is a dangerous
place. Poverty leaves people powerless and in pain. We Lions are a brilliant
antidote, a force for good. LCIF is the best way for us to pool our resources
and to channel our good will. The most effective way to confront major problems in society is for people to band together and marshal resources. LCIF
represents Lions at their best and at their most effective.
By the time you receive this I should be home after having my
left hip replaced on the 26th Feb, so if you have a spare moment come and see me for a chat. No baking please, as Bryan
is home until the 8th March and he is a good cook.
In this issue we celebrate the achievements of LCIF. Thank you, Lions, for
supporting LCIF, and bringing help, hope and healing to so many. Please continue to support our Foundation. There is only one Louis Zamperini. But there
are 1.35 million Lions. Please continue to be a great Lion, zealously helping
your own community and just as selflessly serving neighbourhoods across the
world through our remarkable Foundation.

Self Worth
Never forget that you are one of a kind. Never forget that if
there weren't any need for you in all your uniqueness to be
on this earth, you wouldn’t be here in the first place. And
never forget, no matter how overwhelming life’s challenges
and problems seem to be, that one person can make a difference in the world. In fact, it is always because of one
person that all the changes that matter in the world come
about.
So be that one person.

Well another month has flown by, seems to go quicker with
our wonderful summer time.
This month a group of us are off to the Annual District Convention in Christchurch 8th-10th March, this is my first time, looking forward to spending some time with fellow members.
We need to look out for our President Diane as she recovers from her
recent hip operation, and any other members who need a little TLC.
If any member knows of any local person who is interested in becoming
a member of Seaward Kaikoura Lions Club please inform our membership committee or bring them along to a supper meeting.

Second VP Report
Welcome to the New Year. My first report since last year. I
hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and holiday
break with family and friends.
Thank you so much for your kind wishes to us on the loss of
a friend riding his motorbike.
Not much is happening at the moment with youth and environment. I am
sure things will be happening soon.
202E convention this weekend. Twelve members are going from our
club, so watch this space. I hope you all have a good month

Third VP Report
Kathy has been extra busy organising the various projects we
have been involved in this past month and when I tried to ring
her to remind her of the bulletin report she had fled to Blenheim
to play bowls! I hope she has a great time over the next few
days.—ed
A big thank you to Kathy and her organising committee for the great job they
have done getting all the projects up and running recently. The Art in the Garden was a wonderful time and lots of folk came to enjoy both the displays by
various local artists and the music which entertained us all during the afternoon.—ed

Some Salient Advice
A Polish man moved to the USA & married an American girl.
Although his English was far from perfect, they got along very well.
One day he rushed into a lawyer's office & asked him if he could
arrange a divorce for him.
The lawyer said that getting a divorce would depend on the circumstances,
and asked him the following questions:
Have you any grounds?
Yes, an acre & half & nice little home.
No, I mean what is the foundation of this case?
It made of concrete.
I don’t think you understand. Do either of you have a real grudge?
No, we have carport & not need one.
I mean what are your relations like?
All my relations still in Poland.
Is there any infidelity in your marriage?
We have hi-fidelity stereo & good DVD player.
Does your wife beat you up?
No, I always up before her.
Is your wife a nagger?
No, she white.
Why do you want this divorce?
She going to kill me.
What makes you think that?
I got proof.
What kind of proof?
She going to poison me.
She buy a bottle at drugstore & put on shelf in bathroom.
I can read English pretty good & it say:

From the Editor’s Mess
This working for a living is not all it’s cracked up to be.
I seem to be rushing around all the time trying to catch
up with myself. However, it does mean that I have
been able to able to indulge in a little retail therapy which I have thoroughly enjoyed.
Kathy’s organising committee did a wonderful job ensuring the Art in the
Garden went smoothly on Sunday 3 March. I did wonder how bad
someone must have been in a past life when both days it had been
scheduled for dawned drizzly, (the only rainy days for the past wee
while!), but despite the damp start to the second day, a very successful
day was enjoyed by the good crowd which came through the gates.
After convention this weekend we will be back in project mode, thinking
about our next big event, the Lip Sync concert later in the year. I know
from previous concerts that this is a fabulous night out and just what the
community needs in the middle of a long winter. I keep trying to think of
something to do, but as yet I haven’t come up with a great idea. I’ll continue to ponder. Have a great month.
