What better way to start off this exciting year then by welcoming in 2012 with POINTS OF INTEREST : the best ever attended New Year‘s Day Club ride. It was the biggest New Year‘s day ride ever with nearly 200 riders. One factor for the big turnout I am sure was the weather; it was about as good as it gets for this time of year, sunny and mild. The Herrington's, Diana, Ken and Kendia have been putting on great rest stops for years and this was no exception. I think Diana out did herself with the great selections of baked breads, spiced hot sliced apples and oatmeal, hot chocolate, and coffee. It was great to see everyone having a fun time and enjoying the event. The Board members are excited to share that the City of Clovis has approached the Club about putting on a Clovis Centennial Century ride just prior to the Amgen Tour of California event which will be coming to Clovis on May 16, 2012. The Century ride will be held May 12, 2012 and a portion of the route will follow the 4th Stage route from Sonora to Clovis. A committee has been formed to begin working on the event. For those of you who love to ride century rides and metric centuries, the month of May, which is national Bike Month, will have at least 3 local century/metric century rides. The Club will have many exciting events to celebrate this anniversary year the first of which will be an All Club ride on Feb. 19, led by yours truly from Woodward Park. Be sure to check the monthly newsletter, The Rough Draft which you receive by email, unless you paid for a hard copy, for upcoming events. If you can think of cool activities to help celebrate our 50th, please let me know. There are some changes that will be happening with the Club Website to provide more information about rides, bicycling 1 events, and make it more interactive. We are especially working on updating the Ride Calendar to make it easier to get information about the rides. One of my first objectives as President was to make available On-line Membership Registration and Renewal. This has been accomplished and folks can now join the club or renew their membership by clicking on the "membership Active.com link button" on our website. One of many great benefits of Club membership is that when you‘re on a club ride and have an accident, you are covered by the Club‘s insurance, which is like a supplemental insurance that covers what your own insurance doesn't. See you on the road! The ride began in the parking lot of Steven‘s Bicycles at Willow & Nees and meandered out through the Copper River development to Friant Rd., for a flat stroll out to the Friant Cove Park just west of the Shell station below Friant Dam, where the Herringtons was so unseasonably nice that many riders chose to strip a layer or two off at the turn around. For some, the New Year‘s Day ride is about the food, for others the socializing, but for many it was about getting a jump on this year‘s annual mileage totals! Dennis Ball N EW Y EAR ’ S D AY CONT . On Sunday, January 15th, members of Fresno Cycling Club, including FCC President Dennis Ball and Newsletter Editor Mark Berry, along with Kim Costa, Gerald Nachtigall, Paul Moore, Carl Frankito, and Scott Sehm, participated in a group ride from Steven‘s Bicycles to the boat launch and recreational area on the Maderaside of Millerton Lake. Except for the cool morning temperatures on the way out and fairly strong headwinds on the return trip, the weather was perfect and the group enjoyed a sun-filled rest stop at the lake. P AGE 4 V OLUME XXXXII , I SSUE 2 F RESNO CYCLING CLUB : THE BEGINNING At the request of club President, Ron Quitoriano and the 2011 Board of Directors, this will be the first of several 1-page articles about the Fresno Cycling Club (FCC), which are intended to give you, the current members, a better understanding about our great cycling club‘s humble beginnings as we cycle through this, the club‘s Fiftieth year since it‘s formation in 1962. My first thoughts when asked to write these articles, and in particular writing about the club‘s first decade, were that I didn‘t have enough information yet and anything about the club‘s very first decade would be somewhat limited. But once I got started I discovered that I have more information than I had previously thought. I hope it meets with your approval, and that you enjoy what I am able to share with all of you. And Happy 50th Anniversary Fresno Cycling Club! I would like to begin by borrowing from an article titled Give My Regards to Broadway, A brief History... which was printed in the October 1989 newsletter, and which was written by my friend and fellow club member, past President; VicePresident; Secretary; & Newsletter Editor (he did it all - well, almost), Mike Mirigian. Mike‘s article was mainly about the final closing of the doors of Broadway Cyclery, a bicycle shop that had a long history in Fresno, and which played an important role in the forming of our club. So rather than take bits and pieces from Mike‘s article, I think it would be best to share all of the article that had to do with how our club became a reality. However, I will add a few comments in order to make a few points just a little bit more clear to the readers. Those comments will be in brackets: [ ]. Page 2 of Mike‘s article begins with, and I quote: ―In 1961, Richard [Richard ―Buddy‖ Avakian, of Broadway Cyclery] recalls helping a group of parents and ―kids‖ form the Fresno Cycling Club. The early FCC meetings were held at 833 Broadway. Richard emphasizes that in the early FCC years, parents helped organize cycling events. Most of the participants were boys between the ages of 13 and 16, though there were adult riders. They had weekly races. In 1962-63 these evolved into the Sierra Foothills Race. The junior riders did one lap around the loop [what many of us have called ―The Circuit‖ for over 30years, and which consists of Willow, Friant, Millerton, Auberry & Copper roads] 22.5 miles, from Papagni‘s Packing Shed [Known as P & R Farms the last time I lived in the Fresno area - it‘s the packing house on the South-west corner of Copper and Willow Avenues.]. The seniors did two laps. By 1964, because two laps did not sufficiently separate the riders, the seniors were required to do three laps and the Sierra Foothills Race became the top sanctioned race in the state, according to Richard.‖ [During my earliest years with the club, in the early70's this race was known as the Friant Road Race, and although my records may not be complete on this, the last date I have recorded that the FCC put on this event was April 27, 1980.] The next paragraph in Mike‘s article went on to say that: ―The FCC also sponsored a Lindsay Orange Blossom Festival Race. Victor Black, now of Palo Alto, was the FCC‘s first President. Vic had just returned from New York after supporting Jerry Hornig‘s 1961 San Francisco to New York record set- ting ride. He was a 21 year old Fresno State College student [I‘m not sure if Mike is referring to Jerry or Vic here, but I think he‘s talking about Vic.]. Vic approached Richard because Broadway was the only shop selling 10-speeds. He asked Richard for the names and addresses of 10-speed customers, and sent each a letter. Sixty-five people showed up for the first FCC meeting, paying $10 for the first year‘s dues.‖ [So now you know that the FCC has had a National Record-breaking rider among their past members, and this ride preceded the Race Across America by more than a decade. When I joined the A.B.L. of A., and began racing in 1973, Vic Black was our district representative for the Northern California region.] Mike goes on to say that: ―The new club was primarily a touring club. It did Thursday evening and weekend rides. It‘s Poker Run around the loop was popular. Also popular were rides to Shaver and Huntington lakes, usually the young riders were sagged up Tollhouse Grade for the start.‖ And that‘s all that Mike had to say about the FCC in this article, the remainder was about Broadway Cyclery itself. I will write more about the events that took place during those years in a future installment of this series of articles. According to recent research done by my friend Dave Mitchell, who was once the club‘s Vice-President for four consecutive years and I believe held other offices prior to that as well, the FCC was officially chartered on February 7th, 1962, according to California state records. And much thanks to Ruth McCrory, widow of charter member Jim McCrory, who gave me four issues of the club‘s newsletters from 1962 & ‗63, I can now tell you who the club‘s officers were for the first year. According to one of those newsletters the following individuals were the club‘s officers for 1962: President - Vic Black; Vice President - Jim Gilmore; Secretary Dennis Gile; Treasurer - Richard Avakian; and Sergeant at Arms - Bob Weedin (a.k.a. Bob ―Speedin‖ Weedin - I hope to tell you more about Bob in a future installment as well.). The Board of Directors included: Vic Black, Wayne Camp, Jim Gilmore, Charles Avakian, Jr., and Clair Young. These names were taken from the April 2, 1962 issue of The Grapevine, which would have been the club‘s fourth newsletter, Volume 1, No. 4. Also listed in that newsletter were two Assistant Secretaries, Gunter and Werner Krueger. And I quote: ―Brothers Gunter and Werner Krueger have been appointed as assistant secretaries to help in club correspondence. The Krueger brothers were avid cycling fans in Berlin before they moved to California. They subscribe to daily German newspapers to keep up with the European races. That‘s all that I have room for this month. In the next couple of months I‘ll try to tell you more about the activities that were enjoyed by the club‘s members during the 1960's, share a list of the charter members with you, and list the club‘s officers and Board of Directors for 1963. These new bike lanes will fill a gap between the bike lanes on Auberry Road and on Minnewawa Avenue. I look forward to using them. Story by—Nick Paladino The county is seriously moving forward with a project to put bicycle lanes on the 1/4 mile of Copper Avenue between Minnewawa Avenue and Auberry Road. I have been asking the county to install these bicycle lanes for over two years. I was initially told that the project must await completion of the County Regional Bicycle Master Plan. After that Plan was adopted by the Board of Supervisors in March, 2011, I resumed my requests. The county staff investigated the area. The staff verified that no additional right-of-way had to be acquired and determined that bike lanes were feasible. Copper Ave. Facing West At the Clovis press conference , where the AMGEN Tour of California was announced, I spoke to Supervisor Debbie Poochigian about installing these bike lanes. She said she would ask the county Public Works and Planning Department about this matter. After she spoke to the Department, these bike lanes became a priority project. The county will add four feet of pavement on both sides of the roadway to match Copper Avenue west of Auberry Road and stripe, sign, and pavement mark the widened road as bike lanes. On January 12th, 70 players from all over the valley, assembled at the 3 Peaks Poker Room at Chukchansi Gold Resort & Casino for the Crystel‘s Gift Charity Poker Tournament. The evening started off with a bang as Sharon Brazil and David Kurtze became co-owners of the dubious tittle of ―First To Bust Out‖. Both players coughed up the $10.00 for a re-buy and continued on. David Kurtze managed to hold it together for a final table appearance and eventually headed for the rail in 5th place. As the blinds got higher and higher, the action continued to heat up as player after player eventually succumb to the inevitable and lost all their chips. There could be only one champion after all, and that title would go to the player who eventually ended up with all of the chips: yours truly. The goal for the evening was $2,000. With the help of 70 paid players and a number of re-buys (and a couple of cash donations as well) Team Crystel‘s Gift was able to raise approximately $1950! Way to go guys! And thank you to everyone who made the trip up the hill to participate! The team will be riding in honor of Crystel Stanford in this year‘s Race Across America. Crystel is the young women who lost control of her bicycle and was fatally injured while participating in the California Classic Weekend Century last year. The team will lead this year‘s century, for the first few miles, The final heads up battle came down to Mark Berry and Larry Stanford— Crystel‘s dad—who had never played in a poker tournament before. Larry‘s aggressive style won him the first few pots and an early chip lead. But as the battle wore on, Mark was able to wear his opponent down—a euphemism for ―got lucky a lot‖—and eventually took all the chips when his K4 off suite came from behind to make trip fours as a third 4 fell on the river. Mark took home a nice tool set that had been donated by one of the generous players. The evening was such a success, many of the players asked if we‘d be doing another tournament soon. Stay tuned, we‘ll see! Cycling Etiquette On a club ride this past month, I was sitting comfortably in the back of an 8 rider pace line when the cyclist in the third spot suddenly moved out towards the center of the road. I wasn‘t sure exactly, at first, why he had made this rather startling move until I saw his next action. Yes folks, we‘re talking about that timetested, tried and true cycling skill known, most affectionately, as ―the snot rocket!‖ On cold days this skill brings certain relief and allows for much easier breathing, but as this cyclist demonstrated, it shouldn‘t come at the peril of your fellow riders. Now, for safety reasons, I‘d like to suggest that rather than move out into the center of the road, consider simply making your way to the back where you can launch multiple volleys and not risk hitting any of your fellow riders. I assure you, nobody will mind you missing your next pull! So here at the back of each issue we‘ll feature one of the many hills in the area that each have a pet name. This month we feature a hill that most every member of the Fresno Cycling Club has had the pleasure of meeting: Cry Baby Hill. The hill stands as the last obstacle on the way home for many a weary rider making their way back from any number of routes out towards the North East of Fresno. It‘s a particular favorite for those making there way back from Millerton Store as it often offers those feather light Mt. Goats we ―bigger‖ guy‘s have to contend with, the chance to put the hammer down. Ken Harrington reports that the hill has a storied history in the annals of our club. It seems that Al Mennucci used to complain about this annoying little pitch on a regular basis and so it became known as ―Mennucci Hill‖. While the name does have a sort of ring to it, I doubt Al can claim bragging rights with regards to negative exclamations made by cyclists whilst ascending this hill. I doubt I‘ve ever ridden over it, in a group, without somebody squawking about how steep it is or how they thought all the climbing was done for the day. While I was taking the photo for this article, club member Steve Fraser (pictured above) happened by. I stopped him and asked if he had a name for this hill. His reply, ―chicken shit hill‖ because ―it‘s a little chicken shit hill!‖ Well, I‘m sure many C2K or Bass Lake Double riders share Steve‘s sentiment about this little bump in the road, but we probably should be shooting for names with ratings below PG-13, Steve. Over the past two seasons, I‘ve ridden this famous stretch of Auberry Rd many times and have always referred to it as Cry Baby Hill. The name seems to fit, and while Ken and Steve‘s suggestions may be a bit more to the point, I don‘t think the guys are going to shed a tear if I continue to refer to this hill as ―Cry Baby Hill‖.
