The WOLVES’ HOWL
Senior Of The Week: Tanise Clipper
Tanise Clipper has been involved with The Anti-Bullying
Club, SADD, student council,
BPA, Link Crew, and most recently, National Honors Society
(NHS). High school has taught
Tanise how important getting
involved really is. “I had no idea
Central offered such a wide variety of clubs and sports. By getting involved in such activities
you meet other students who
share common interests with
you. By simply paying attention
to the announcements, signs in
the hallway, etc., you open your
eyes to a diverse selection of
activities to partake in. What
I’ve taken away from high
school is, by being involved
your voice is actually heard,”
Clipper’s biggest regret was
waiting until the last minute to
get things done. Her plans for
after high school include finishing her associate's degree at Delta, and then attending Michigan
Technical University to study
computer science. Clipper currently works at Bob Evans. She
looks forward to studying material that she is interested in, and
getting a job in that she is passionate about. Her advice to
underclassmen is that it’s never
too late to join any club or sports
team, and to just go for it. What
makes Clipper unique is her
ability to talk to people; she has
never been shy. One word to
Logan-The Final Chapter
The movie Logan centers
around the comic character, Logan, also known as Wolverine,
played by Hugh Jackman. It
follows Logan on his quest to
save the world. This takes place
in the future, when Logan is one
of the last remaining mutants.
This is able to happen because
Logan has a healing factor, and
for those who don’t know, that
means that he has accelerated
healing, which makes it take a
lot longer for him to die.
This is set in the future,
where long time X-Men Charles
Xavier and Logan, aka Wolverine, must learn to deal with the
death of the other X-Men. They
must work together to stop a
corporation that is led by Nathaniel Essex, which plans on
destroying the world. It’s not so
straightforward though because
Xavier is suffering from Alzheimer's, and Logan's healing factor
is beginning to go away. They
must save a young girl named
Laura Kinney, which happens to
be a female clone of Wolverine
before their time runs out.
Jackman has had a long career when it comes to playing as
Logan/Wolverine in the movie
versions of the character. Over
his years, he has made an image
for the character wolverine when
it comes to a person playing the
character. While Jackman says
he truly enjoyed the scene of
Carley Collins
describe Clipper is boisterous.
Her favorite song is any song by
Troye Sivan. If Clipper won the
lottery, she wouldn’t buy anything at first, she’d save it to go
on vacation with her friends.
Clipper would love to travel to
Italy if she ever got the chance.

being Wolverine, he hints that
this will most likely be his last
one of this franchise. We all
truly hope that one day Jackman
will come back to play the iconic character Logan/Wolverine.

Grad Of The Week: Danielle Reed
Danielle Reed is a former student
of Central High School, graduating
with the class of ‘07.
While attending Central, Reed was
extremely athletic, playing volleyball
her Freshman year as well as playing
Varsity Basketball, and running Varsity Track. She was a key player during
both of these sports, playing as one of
the best point-guards Central has seen,
and also breaking multiple records in
Track and Field, and sending herself to
the big state track meet every year.
Reed was even part of the Girls Track
team who won a Saginaw Valley
League Championship; this was only
done one time since her team won.
Reed says that her experience here
at Central was phenomenal and she
sometimes she wishes she could go
back. Reed claims that while attending
high school, her favorite subject was
English because she really enjoyed
reading (and still does). Her favorite
part of her high school experience was
playing basketball, “It really was a
great atmosphere, all the girls were my
best friends. We always had a great
time and we were actually a very good
team, our opponents were afraid of us
back then,”
Since graduating from Central,
Reed has attended Delta College,
where she played collegiate basketball
for two years. She also attended the
Bayshire Beauty Academy, where she
studied massage therapy, which she
says really paid off since she is now
currently employed as a masseuse at a
Resort in Florida.
Unusual Animals And Crazy Behavior
Humans aren’t the only type of
animal that have unbelievable attributes. Wild animals and creatures are
also capable of having such attributes.
For instance, A lobster was found
weighing in at 14 pounds, and a chimp
was found smoking cigarettes. Animals are capable of crazy acts.
Hurricane Nicole gave a fisherman company called Sanctuary Marine
Bermuda the intuition to complete a
fishing trip. Hoping that the storm
would bring fish to the surface, the
company would get what they wished
for.
“Hopefully people will see the
hook in it’s toe and realize we caught
it by accident,” the company says.
When going on this fishing trip, the
company never expected to be catching a lobster, especially one of this
size. 14 pounds is considered a large
lobster, but others have weighed in
with much more. The largest lobster
was weighed in at 44 pounds, and was
caught off the coast of Nova Scotia.
A 14 pound lobster isn’t the craziest animal-related incident lately in the
world. In Pyongyang, North Korea, a
chimp named Azalea was found chainsmoking. The 19 year old chimp is
said to be smoking a pack a day. Zoo
trainers may throw lighters into the
chimp’s exhibit, and the chimp may
light the cigarette that way, or it will
be pre-lit. Anyone might think this
would be causing an uproar, but the
visitors of the zoo find enjoyment in
the chimp’s smoking habits.

Sweep Week 3-Peat
The Wolves have done it again!
With an ongoing rivalry since 1974,
Central still continues to amazing fans
and supporters with their scores
against Western. Three years in a row,
the varsity football team has beat the
Western Warriors. And, for the first
time since 2007, the Wolves will be
playing in the playoffs, starting Friday,
Oct 28th. “The shoe has been on the
other foot a couple times, where we
would keep them out of the playoffs if
we beat them and I’m sure they’re
saying the same thing right now about
how big is is to be in the playoffs,”
said Central coach Morley Fraser. The
Wolves (6-3) scored a 34-13 win over
their regular Week 9 rivals, the Warriors, to secure their spot in the playoffs.
Sophomore Brian Elder turned his
bad pass to senior Robert Walkowiak
in the beginning of the first quarter,
into a 5-yard touchdown. This gave
the Wolves a 7-0 lead in the first quar-
ter. Junior Dequez Weathers ran for a
48-yard touchdown but was caught
short with a flag thrown somewhere
near 35 yards for what some thought
was a block. It was later confirmed
that the flag was for a personal foul on
the Warriors.
In the second quarter, the Warriors
David Coffey threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Cameron Campbell. This
got Western on the board, with the
score tied at 7-7 with less than 10
minutes left in the quarter. There were
two penalties on a Western player, for
un-sportsmanship conduct, helped set
up a 3-yard touchdown for Weathers.
With 7:53 left in the second quarter,
Weather scored which gave the
Wolves a 21-7 lead on the Warriors.
Senior Tanner Koth took a 57-yard
touchdown dash, leading the Wolves
into the half with a 27-7 lead.
The second half of the game, all
the fans were on edge. The Warriors
Club of the Week
A ukulele and guitar enthusiast,
Morgan Steele, vied for a group to
play and meet up to simply play music, hang out and talk. This led to the
creation of her very own club: Ukulele
club. A new addition to Central, it’s
yet another gateway to a group of people that can be represented. It’s a great
way to learn new music, play old music, and get assistance on any struggles
or difficulties they have playing their
instrument.
With about 20 members, the club
keeps growing week after week. “I
love having friends to jam, hang out,
play with and learn something new,”
President Morgan Steele says. You

were making a comeback as hard as
they could be but the Wolves were not
letting them have it. Weathers runs 42yards to the end zone, giving Central a
34-7 lead over Western, when Western’s Liam Tobin scores on a 19-yard
run with 2:07 left in the third quarter
which bumped the score to 34-13.

don’t even have to play a ukulele ironically. You could sit in and watch and
sing along if you wanted. Observer
Kyle Lalonde says, “Everyone's pretty
cool. I enjoy spectating,” Going there
myself, it was quite a relaxing, accepting and comfortable atmosphere to
spend your afternoon, distressing from
school and everyday life.
Plans for the future includes a band
bounce performance and working with
the band and choir for many more performances. They also hope to put on
community activities to become active
members of music throughout Bay
City and get spirits up, especially
around the holidays at elderly homes.
Moreover, they would like to spread
good news of central and the talents
that are within the building.
The advisor of this club is Rita
Cammin (room 111). They meet every
Thursday after school until 4 pm and
are always accepting new members.

UK Prime Minister and the EU
Theresa May is the newest Prime
Minister of the United Kingdom. She
was the successor of David Cameron
who served from 2010-2016. As many
people already know, the United Kingdom and the European Union are no
longer acquainted. Great Britain left
the EU fairly recently. Many thought it
was extremely unlikely that they
would. Even some of the finest bookies in the UK predicted that the odds
of the UK staying in the EU was 80 to
20. Now that the United Kingdom has
left the European Union, current Prime
Minister Theresa May says that she
plans to stay close with it. This was
perceived to be very hypocritical and
has raised the eyebrows of many of the
UK’s critics.
Andrew Maxson
In this meeting she addressed to her
cabinet, she also mentioned some
things about Brexit. Brexit is a news
source in the United Kingdom that
made it appear that her dinner with the
EU leaders seem very awkward. But,
“We will still work very closely with
the EU,” is still to be determined as to
what that exactly means.
Theresa May has been in office
since July 2016. She is also the leader
of the Conservative party. May has
also been a member of Parliament of
Maidenhead since 1997.

Sports, Band & Theater Oh My!
Football, band, theater, etc… are
just a few extracurricular activities
provided here at Bay City Central.
Central has roughly 16 sports teams
available here, more than 10 different
clubs to join, as well as band and theater. Central offers these extracurricular
activities to help kids stay focused on
school, and to keep their grades up.
Most activity requires students to keep
all grades above a D- in order to participate. Studies show that students
who are more involved tend to be
more successful in school. Sophomore, Marcus Zavala says “During
any sport season is when my grades
are the best. I love playing football, so
if my grades weren’t good, I wouldn’t
be able to play, and I would hate to
watch from the sideline.” Coaches are
especially tough on their players.
Coaches will contact teachers to make

sure grades are up to date, and attendance is good. Attendance is another
thing that will decide if the students
play. You cannot have an unexcused
absent on game day or else you cannot
participate. Overall, almost everyone
here at Central is involved in something. Our attendance rates have gone
up, as well as all of our test scores.
Keep up the good work Wolves!

Issues of the Free Lunch Grant
Two years ago Central received a
grant that allowed Central’s students to
get lunch that was free of charge to
them. However, this grant did, and still
does, have strings attached. An open
campus on the school is no longer permitted as it used to be before the grant
was added. There are benefits to this
grant, but there is also downsides to the
grant, just like most grants. It is a matter
of whether or not the benefits outweigh
the drawbacks of the grant.
There were also setbacks and benefits
of Central’s situation before the grant.
Before the grant, many students wouldn’t return from school after their lunch
block. Also, there was starting to be an
issue with the safety of the students that
drove to fast food restaurants or went
home for lunch. Another major issue
was that the students that live in poverty
couldn’t afford lunch. Many students
either packed a lunch from home or
skipped lunch. The benefits of having an
open campus lunch was that the lunch
ladies didn’t have to prepare as much
food. Lunch block also used to be much
less crowded and packed.
Before the grant for free lunch, there
were the disadvantages of not being able
to afford it if you were poor. The grant
helped reduce the amount of student
driver accidents. Now, you can get lunch
even if you don’t have a dime to your
name. But in the eyes of many students
we have noticed major issues. Crowding
and messes have been the major issues
to Central’s cafeteria. It is almost impossible to get a lunch tray without being
pushed or shoved, which virtually started happening since the beginning of the
grant. Also, the messes of people that
don’t feel the need to pick up their mess
has become ridiculous too. Since the
grant, Principal Tim Marciniak has
come on the intercom time and time
again stating that there will be an end to
eating in the hallways if students wouldn’t clean up their mess. Marciniak said
“Students the messes in the hallway are
California- Blink 182
After five years of being dormant,
Blink 182 returns with yet another classic
album. With the last album Neighborhoods being subpar, and the lead guitarist
Tom Delonge leaving the band to hunt
aliens, California did not exactly have
high expectations. The album surpassed
all expectations, and contains several of
their now most popular songs ever. The
album had even become number one on
the Billboard 200 album charts, surpassing Views by Drake. This is the first time
the band has acquired number one album
on the charts in over 10 years. With songs
such as She’s Out of Her Mind, Bored to
Death, and Cynical climbing to the top of
the charts, it’s no wonder as to how this
album became so successful. The album

getting ridiculous and we will take away
your privilege of eating in the hallway
and outside if we must, so please clean
up your mess.” Fortunately, students
have the privilege to go outside which
semi-solved the crowding issue but the
cafeteria and hallways are still being
littered with lunch trays, and the issue
has yet to been solved.

revealed some of the softer sides of the
band with songs such as Home is Such a
Lonely Place, but kept the derogatory and
joke side of the band with songs like Rabbit Hole and Built this Pool. Mark Hoppus states “I don’t think there was a
theme. I certainly wasn’t writing about
anything differently than I think I ever
have before. What I love about Blink is
that we write catchy melodies with dark
lyrics.” The band will continue to succeed
off of this album, tour, and hopefully continue to publish similar albums.

BCC Boys Swim Team
The boys swim team has ended the
2016 season with a bang by sending a
full relay team to the state competition.
Although three of them were seniors,
there are still four more returning state
meet competitors and that's about all
the team needs to return to state meet.
With over 13 returning swimmers and
several of them making it to the finals
day of Valleys, the chances of having
another successful season are in our
favor. The 4 returning seniors are
Chase Borkowski, Michael Murphy,
Jacob Gripentrog and Steven Dorian;
there will be several strong leaders to
control and push the team for a strong
season. But the team can’t rely on
themselves for a strong season, they
also need a good coach to push them.
That is where the legend of a coach,
Staudacher comes in. Staudacher has
been coaching Central’s swim team for
over 15 years, and has been the best
coach a team could ask for. He makes
sure the team will push themselves but
never yells. Staudacher’s favorite saying for the team is “Last one Fast one,”
which means the last part of the set
should be the fastest. The team owes a
majority of its past and future success
to Coach Staudacher. The preseason
practices will start November 1, and
the team will strive for another successful year.
It's a Secret
Teenagers favorite thing is fast food.
McDonalds, Taco Bell, Burger King,
etc. Did you know that there are
“secret” menu items? They're not on the
menu, but if you ask for them they will
surely know what you're asking for. If
they don’t, they may need a manager.
Surely enough, you should be able to
find one of these items.
First on the list is everyone's favorite, McDonald's. The first secret menu
item is something called the Land, Sea,
and Air burger. This burger is made up
of beef patties, filet-o-fish, and a
McChicken. Do you think you can take
all that protein? The second item is a
“McGangBang” which is a McChicken
inside of a double cheese burger. The
last item for McDonald's is the
“Monster Mac,” which is a classic Big
Mac but with a twist; it has eight patties.
Now for Taco Bell, the first item is
“The Incredible Hulk,” “The incredible

hulk is the one of Taco Bell's healthy
secret menu options,” It’s made up of a
5 layer burrito layered with guacamole
and fesco by getting rid of the six inch
tortilla with sour cream. The next item
is the “Cheesarito,” This is one of the
most popular items on the secret menu.
It contains melted cheese, scallions, and
taco sauce in a soft shell. The third and
final item is the “Quesarito,” which is a
quesadilla and a burrito all in one.
The third fast food place is Burger
King. The “Rodeo Burger” is first on
the list. It is a simple cheeseburger with
tangy bbq sauce and onion rings.
Sounds good right? The “Suicide Burger,” is the second secret menu item.
“Four beef patties, four slices of cheese,
bacon, and special sauce all jammed in
between two sesame seed buns.” Imagine all that grease. Finally the “BK
Club,” Crispy chicken sandwich topped
with bacon, tomato, and cheese.
Even though only three are listed
from each fast food restaurant, there are
plenty more; just look them up online.
Can you not wait to sink your teeth into
one of these secret menu items or what?
You should definitely go and order one
of them. You won't be disappointed.

Common Animals That Hibernate
When the weather starts to get cold,
some animals get ready to hibernate.
Many animals hibernate through the
winter in North America. Today, I will
show you a few animals that hibernate
that you may recognize.
Hibernation is the state of low metabolic rate, low heart rate, slow breathing, and low body temperature. Animals are inactive when they hibernate,
and sometimes it just looks like they
are dead, but they are not. The wood
frog is one of the species that just look
like they are dead when they hibernate.
The wood frog is completely frozen in
the winter. They completely stop
breathing and their heart stops. These
frogs are like this all winter until it gets
warm enough to de-thaw the frog.
Hamsters, skunks, ground squirrels,
prairie dogs, hedgehogs, deer mice,
bears, bats and common poor wills are
some other common animals that hibernate. Most of these animals on the list
don't go into true deep hibernation;
they go into a light hibernation called
torpor. Animals can easily be woken up
when they are in torpor. The animals
that typically go into torpor are bears,
prairie dogs, hamsters, skunks, ground
squirrels, and deer mice. So, if you see
a bear in the winter hibernating, don't
get close to it. The bear will be ready to
wake up and defend himself.
From Spain to Michigan
Here at Bay City Central, we have
been able to have a few exchange students throughout the years. Patricia
Lopez is one of the few exchange students this year at BCC. Lopez came
from Bilbao, Spain and is 15 years old.
She lives with her host family, who are
the Navas. In her home at the Navas,
there is a three and six year old. So far,
Lopez is really loving her host family
and is excited to see what’s in store for
her for the next few months.
Lopez will be in America until June,
which is when school gets out. She
loves BCC because it's different from
her home school in Spain; she says it’s
very different and easier and that’s her
favorite thing about it. Lopez loves the
fun activities such as homecoming and
football games, because they don't have
that back in Spain. So far, even though
she hasn’t been in America for very
long, her favorite thing has been homecoming. “It was a great experience with
great friends,” Lopez says. Her favorite

class so far is art class, and is excited
for the new classes.
Lopez’s favorite thing about America is “All things, especially the people,”
Out of all the new foods she has tried,
pizza is her favorite, and she's not a fan
of “American,” tacos. In Spain, they
don’t celebrate Halloween, so Lopez is
extremely excited to go trick-or-treating
with her host family, and can’t wait to
see what it’s like. She still doesn’t
know what to be though. Lopez has
been to a few things around Bay City,
such as the mall but wants to go to the
Saginaw mall since she heard it is a lot
bigger.
Since Lopez will be in the Michigan until June, if she can, she would
like to travel to the U.P or to California.
California is the first place she wants to
travel to but if she can’t, she would like
to come back so she can. This isn’t
Lopez’s first time in America; in 2015
she went to Florida with her family.
Lopez came to America to learn about
the American high school experience,
and to get better at English. Lopez specifically came to Michigan because it
was the only state that offered school
later in the year because she could not
come to America any earlier. So far,
Lopez hasn’t really felt too home sick;
there are times she misses them, but
she's focusing on the experience and
talks to her family everyday. Lopez is
happy to be here, and can not wait to
share the experience with her family
and friends.

Wolves v. Warriors
Girl’s swimming is coming to a
close, and what better way to end the
season than with a rivalry meet? The
meet will be held at T.L. Handy Middle
School, and will be hosted by the Central Wolves, with the visiting team of
the Western Warriors. The meet will be
held on October 27th at 7pm. Senior
Olivia Delano said, “This will be a
hard meet, but I know that our team
always comes together and always
gives their all,” Senior Emily Hill added, “We are hype for this meet, maybe
it’s because the season is almost over,
but nonetheless we are hype,” This
meet has a lot going for it, as it will be
the last time for one year that the two
rival schools will have a chance to
duke it out one-on-one. The girls certainly are getting ready for the end of
the season, and intend to end it in a big
way.
After this Thursday, the girls will be
getting ready for their last big event of
the season, the Valley Conference
meet. This meet will take place at
SVSU on November 3rd for the preliminary rounds, and November 5th for
the finals. This will be the last chance
to see the girls swim, so be sure to
come on down and support your Bay
City Central swim team!

The Rising Number of Immigrants in Michigan
The number of immigrants in Michigan has gone up 11% since 2010. An
estimate from the U.S. Census Bureau
states 6.5% of the state’s population
was born outside of the U.S. The percent of Michigan residents born outside
the U.S. is about half the national average, and Mexico is the most common
birthplace for immigrants living in
Michigan. But what is the controversy
with immigrants? Is it a bad or good
that more are coming to the Great Lakes
areas?
There isn’t exactly a controversy
with the rising number of immigrants in
Michigan, though, but many people
have their own views on it. Immigrants
are actually essential to Michigan’s
economy as workers and taxpayers.
Immigrants comprise about 7.2% of the
state’s workforce. Many negative people claim that immigrants steal people’s
jobs, but, if we were to remove immigrants from Michigan, we would actually lose $3.8 billion in economic activity,
Page 8
$1.7 billion in gross state product, and
would actually lose about 20,000 jobs.
Immigrant, Latino, and Asian entrepreneurs have added billions of dollars,
and thousands of jobs to Michigan’s
economy.
Immigrants are not only integral to
the state’s economy as workers, they
also account for billions of dollars in
tax revenue, and consumer purchasing
power. Immigrants and their children
are growing shares of Michigan’s population and electorate. As the economy
continues to recover every year, Michigan can ill-afford to alienate such an
important component of its labor force,
tax base, and business community.
Even studies have shown that immigrants are highly less likely to commit
crime and be behind bars. Immigrants
are being defined more and more as
threats, and unfortunately, immigration
policy is being shaped by fear and stereotype more than empirical evidence.

Crashing on Mars
The Exomars mission was lead by
Roscosmos, a Russian space industry
which sent a rover, Schiaparelli, into
orbit back in March 2016, taking nearly
7 months to reach and attempt to land
on the red planet. The rover was
planned to touchdown on Mars
Wednesday, October 19th. However,
signal was lost to the Schiaparelli just
minutes before the craft was expected
to land. It is speculated that the rover’s
thrusters and parachute were activated
too late, causing the craft to crash into
Mars, likely destroying it. If the lander
did survive the impact of the crash, it
holds data that would help scientists
understand what happened to the rover
during the rapid descent. "Those imag-
es were supposed to be transmitted
right after landing, so we have to wait
for a successful landing." TGO project
scientist Olivier Witasse said about the
information.
The crashing of the Schiaparelli
was not in vain however, since it was
intended only as a test. The rover was
meant to test new technologies, as well
as the conditions of Mars, so that scientists could plan for future missions.
Although the lander was never meant
to last for more than a few days, it was
equipped with a laboratory to discover
if there has ever been life on Mars. The
Russian space industry, Roscosmos,
intends to launch another lander in
2020, using the information from the

defense left Illinois scoreless until the

First Time For Everything
Gabrielle View and Christine Reed
are the junior varsity volleyball coaches at Bay City Central High School.
This is their first year coaching a
team, and they couldn’t be happier to
coach such great girls. Both coaches
are recent graduates of Central High,
and former volleyball players. Reed
graduated in 2014, and View graduated
2015. View played varsity volleyball
and varsity soccer while she was at
Central. View was the libero for the
volleyball team. She broke the dig record with 39 digs her senior year against
the thrilling Central v. Western volleyball game. “I love coaching the sport I
love but the girls I coach make it even
better,” said View. This is View’s first
year coaching the junior varsity team.
View is excited to return to coaching
next fall.
Reed was also very involved in
high school. She played three varsity
level sports which included volleyball,
basketball, soccer. She was full of energy, and was a great team player.
Reed played middle front and middle
back. She enjoys coaching because she
says the girls really look up to her and
Gabrielle for guidance. “I really liked
coaching this year and it was great
watching the girls grow individually
and as a team. It really makes me happy when the girls would get a block
and they would turn around and look at
me with a big smile because we
worked on it in practice the day before,“ said Reed. She is very excited to
coach volleyball next year, but can’t
wait to be the assistant coach for girls
Sleep Is More Important
The biology of human sleep timing
changes as we age. As puberty begins,
bedtimes and waking up times get later.
This trend continues until 19.5 years in
women and 21 in men. The shift correlates with hormonal changes at puberty
and decline as we age.
Studies done by Mary Carskadon at
Brown University show that teenagers
need at least nine hours of sleep a night
to maintain energy and alertness for
academic performance, and a survey
done at a high school in Liverpool
showed that students were getting an
average of five hours every night. Similar studies have shown higher levels of
the hormone ghrelin, which promotes
hunger, and a lower levels of leptin,
which creates a sense of feeling full.
The suggestion is that long-term
sleep deprivation might be an important
factor in predisposing people to condi-

freshmen basketball.

tions such as diabetes, obesity, and hypertension. A high school in the U.K.
near Newcastle changed its start time to
10 a.m. in 2009, and saw an uptick in
academic performance. However, a
later start by itself is not enough.
Society in general as well as teenagers need to start taking sleep more seriously. If you are dependent on waking
up to an alarm clock and feel sleepy
during the day, it means you’re not getting enough sleep during the night.
Avoid caffeinated drinks after lunch, try
not to use any electronic devices half of
an hour before you go to bed, and make
sure your room is dark and not too
warm during the night.

Sports, Band & Theater Oh My!
Football, band, theater, etc… are
just a few extracurricular activities provided here at Bay City Central. Central
has roughly 16 sports teams available
here, more than 10 different clubs to
join, as well as band and theater. Central offers these extracurricular activities to help kids stay focused on school,
and to keep their grades up. Most activity requires students to keep all grades
above a D- in order to participate.
Studies show that students who are
more involved tend to be more successful in school. Sophomore, Marcus
Zavala says “During any sport season
is when my grades are the best. I love
playing football, so if my grades weren’t good, I wouldn’t be able to play,
and I would hate to watch from the
sideline.” Coaches are especially tough
on their players. Coaches will contact
teachers to make sure grades are up to
date,
and
attendance
is
good. Attendance is another thing that
will decide if the students play. You
cannot have an unexcused absent on
game day or else you cannot participate. Overall, almost everyone here at
Central is involved in something. Our
attendance rates have gone up, as well
as all of our test scores. Keep up the
good work Wolves!

Gender Rules in Athletics
At Bay City Central High School there
are many athletic opportunities for the
students here. But there are females that
might want to play male sports, or
transgender students that want to play a
sport. There are many rules for who can
play sports in Central High School and
they will be reviewed throughout this
article.
Females are allowed to play male
sports unless there is a like sport in the
same season. For example, a female can
not play boys baseball in the spring because girls softball is also in the spring.
Females are allowed to play a male sport
instead of a similar female sport if they
are in different seasons, and they have
another sport they want to play in the
same season as the female sport. An example of this is a female playing boys
tennis instead of girls tennis because she
also wants to play girls softball, which is
in the same season as girls tennis.
Males are not allowed at all to participate in any female sport at Bay City Cen-
Page 11
tral High School. The only way this could
possible happen is if the male took this
case to court and won the case or if he is
transgender.
Bay City Central can not decide if a
transgender male can play a female sport.
Each individual case of a transgender
male playing a female sport has to be
decided by the state of Michigan to say if
they are allowed or not to play. If they are
Ryan Webb
a transgender female, they are
still allowed to play any male sport and it
goes by the same rules as females.

Redemption: Playoff Bound
Central’s Varsity football team has
had an impressive season this Fall.
However, their greatest accomplishment didn’t come until later in the season when they beat out Heritage, their
homecoming game, in hopes of finding themselves a chance at the
playoffs.
Later in the month the Wolves took
on long time rival, Bay City Western,
taking a big and deserved win and securing themselves a spot in the
playoffs; something that Central football has not encountered in about ten
years.
At first the Wolves were supposed
to travel up to Traverse City to take on
Traverse City West, but that changed
and the Wolves will now be facing
Midland Dow, a team they faced earlier in the season and took a small loss
from, but have a good chance at beating if they go in strong. Senior Isaiah
Newton says “It will definitely be a
good game, I think we can hold our
own,” Moses Lopez informs us that
the team is pumped up and ready to
play. “We all want to win, we already
made it this far so we have to keep
going.”
The Wolves will be taking on the
Dow Chargers at Midland Dow’s stadium Friday, October 28th.
Mackenzie Reed
Mackenzie Reed is in her last year
of school here at Bay City Central. She
currently goes to school for half the
day and then co-ops at SC Johnson,
and she also works at Big Boy. Reed is
apart of NHS, Project Unify, Green
Club, and Link Crew. She is also very
involved with the community on her
own time, and through her church. She
enjoys spending time with her friends
and family, helping out the community,
and also says that she loves chicken
nuggets. Reed was on this year’s senior
homecoming court, and said it was one
of the best things that she has had the
honor to experience.
After high school, Reed wants to
go into the medical field, and she plans
on helping children who are diagnosed
with juvenile diabetes, because she
knows how hard it can be to manage
the disease. Her family's medical history has shaped her into the person that
she is today, and she wants to use what
she has learned through the course of

her life to uplift others. She wants to
study something that has to do with
diabetes, since that has been a big part
of her life since seventh grade when
she was diagnosed with it. Although
that has been one of her day to day
struggles, she never lets it get her
down.
“People are going to change but
that’s apart of growing up,” Reed says
as a piece of advice to underclassmen,
“Learn to rely on yourself because
sometimes that’s all you have!” Reed
wants to remind people that even
though it’s hard, you should remain
true to who you are regardless of everything going on around you. “Always
try your best, no matter how hard it
gets,” explains Reed, “Go that extra
mile, you won’t regret it when you get
to your senior year.” She says she
wants to be remembered as someone
who did just that, when she leaves Central.

Silent Majority for Hillary
Despite political parties, another factor to watch out for is the different groups
and cultures that lead people to vote a
certain way. One of these groups is the
new silent majority that’s on the rise,
from the old white working class, to educated women and minorities. This group
is theorized to be in support of Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, despite the
Republican Nominee Trump realizing the
silent majority has changed.
Research from Pew Research Center
shows that many people with college degrees or education are leaning towards
Clinton, and the Democratic party in general, since young people have more college degrees and education than in years
past. The minority aspect of it is that the
Democratic party is 40% minorities and is
on a rising trend (people believing Trump
is the reason.) and it's even more diverse
with Latinos in the backing.
Even though the new silent majority
is for Clinton, the Democratic party is still
in trouble. On the state level, they have
lost almost all control, except in 8 states,
where there is a democratic governor and
control over both houses. At the national
level however, Democrats have been in
top priority since 1945 in congress, and
usually win presidential, but once it
comes to the state level voting in 2018,
republicans will reign supreme.
Overall, even with the new minority
and results of the 2016 general election,
Bay City's Little Sister
In the past few years of this great
rivalry, Bay City Western High School
has proven to have fallen off. For
about 4 or 5 years, Central has been
the one that came out on top, and that
looks to continue this year. There’s
only been a few sports they could
compete with us in, but football is not
one of them. We’ve dominated them
the past 4 years, and that only looks to
continue for years. We’ve left our
mark on Western in a variety of sports,
so we plan on passing the torch on to
the underclassmen, hoping they will
continue to do the same.
In sports such as swimming and
volleyball, western has fallen to the
wolves. Almost our entire 4 year career here at Central we have proven to
be the better school athletically and

even academically. The warriors don’t
have any chance of beating us for a
few years, given the fact that we have
swept them on all 3 levels for 3 years
straight, while they only combined for
a total 31 points over 3 years as opposed to our 116 points. We hope the
classes under us can continue to do the
same for years to come.

Bigfoot Spotted In Michigan
On October 5, 2016 there was an
unknown figure seen in the right corner
of an eagle cam. An Idaho State University Professor named Jeff Meldrum
studies the legend of the neverconfirmed man-ape-like creature, tells
the newspaper the video is
“Interesting,” but “Doesn’t offer much
by way of compelling evidence,” The
stories of a huge, hairy creature that
seems to be half man and half ape, have
existed in various parts of the world for
centuries. Bigfoot is described to be 6-8
ft tall, with a large forehead and rounded head like a gorilla’s. He is covered in
brown or red hair with enormous feet
which he is known for.
Some “Witnesses,” claim the Bigfoot prints they saw on the ground were
accompanied by claw marks. These
stories differed from tribe to tribe, or
even family to family; this means Bigfoot has various different names. It wasn’t until 1958 that the legend really
started to spread throughout the United
States. The most common explanation
for the Bigfoot sightings is that people
are playing pranks. Some of the sightings are even misidentified animals.
The idea of a real Bigfoot is unconvinc-

refuse to use the bathrooms because of
how terrible they are. The main complaint is that the locks on the doors
don’t work. Many of them are not
aligned correctly so it’s impossible to

you have to continuously press on the

Dakota Sioux: Protect the Land
The Dakota Access Pipeline is a 30inch diameter pipeline that stretches
approximately 1,172 miles from North
Dakota, to Patoka Illinois. This pipeline
will enable domestically produced crude
oil from North Dakota to reach major
refining markets in a more direct and
cost effective way. The Dakota Access
Pipeline will connect the Bakken, and
Three Forks production areas in North
Dakota to existing pipelines in Illinois.
As a result of the pipeline, the company
will have the ability to transport as
much as 470,000 barrels of crude oil a
day. The Dakota Access Pipeline will
also employ new advanced pipeline
technology to ensure safety and reliability, and the pipeline will be constructed
with the newest of technologies and the
most up to date monitoring system to
help ensure safety.
In addition to the pipeline, the NDPL
company, who operates the pipeline, has
an interest in protecting landowner interest as well as the local environment.
In an effort to protect the local interest,
the pipeline is committed to making
special accommodations, minimize disruptions, and help to achieve full restoration to any damage as a result from
the pipeline. Unfortunately for the
NDPL company, on October 22, hundreds of people gathered and marched
toward the construction site near Standing Rock, North Dakota. Native organizers lit sage and prayed before setting
off on an 8 mile hike to try and stop the
pipeline from being built. Critics of this
pipeline have argued that the environmental hazards caused by pipelines
could be catastrophic, especially in the
possibility of a spill. The Sioux tribe
claims that the contaminants from the
pipeline will contaminate their drinking
water and pollute the Missouri river.
The activists who put up a fight against
the pipeline called themselves “Water
Protectors.”
Sadly, this relatively peaceful protest
was broken up by the sound of police
yelling “Don’t move, everyone is under
arrest.” Furthermore, the detainees were
forced into humiliating strip searches,
were refused phone calls, and some of
their personal belongings even went
missing. It’s obvious that each side
wants drastically different things, and
they are fighting tooth and nail to get
what why want. The Dakota Pipeline
officials want the construction to contin-

have lost money. The Sioux tribe and
everyone fighting against it wants the
construction to permanently disappear,
for they fear the damage to the sacred
burial sites, and the water supply would
be both devastating and irreversible.
Both sides have decent arguments and
their case recently found its way to the
hands of the court, and in a completely

Pulled Over
The first time you see those red and
blue flashing lights in your rearview
mirror, it’s a scary experience. Everyone gets the thought that it’ll be on
their record forever, and halt their
chances to be approved for a car later
in life. Even the threat of a ticket is
enough to scare you from the police.
There are a few things to remember if
you do get pulled over.
This first tip should be obvious, but
don’t threaten the officer. Whether you
were speeding or not, the officer is just
doing their job. While it does inconvenience you and you may need to pay
a fine, you can always argue the ticket
later. You don’t need to end up in the
news for threatening a police officer.
Be prepared. We’ve all watched Cops,
we know the drill. As nolo.com sug-
gests, “Stay in the car until and unless
the officer directs you to get out.” You
may be given a warning and let off, or
you could be given a ticket. If it’s
something simple like a headlight going out, you probably won’t get a ticket. But be sure to get it fixed as soon as
possible so you don’t get pulled over
again.
Driving safe and being careful is the
best way to avoid a ticket. Watch the
road, wear your seatbelt, don’t text and
drive. If you’re going to be reckless,
don’t put other people in danger. Remember, getting pulled over is an everyday thing, it happens to everyone.
It’s how you handle the situation that
makes the difference.

The Nintendo Switch is a new
game console from the company Nintendo. It is a hybrid console put out by
the console because you can use it at
home or take it on a trip. It scheduled
to be released sometime in March of
2017. This will be released all around
the world eventually. This is all able to
happen because of the dedication and
persistence of the company and consumers.
Many people are extremely excited
for this console because people are
ready to have and experience the hybrid console and see just how fun it
really is. We can see that the system
has a large amount of games. Many
are extremely excited and ready to
experience them.
The first game that shows on the

New School With Big Changes
A freshman made her new school a
new chapter in her life with finally being
able to express herself. Sierra Moler, a
girl welcomed into Central High by the
students and staff all the from Alabama.
Moler admitted that down south in her
home town, “They either bully you or
they talk to you,” rudely enough. Also,
they had zero opportunities to express
themselves. You cannot have your hair
died any color besides the basic brown,
blonde, and red hair.
A former Bay City Academy student,
Patricia Weaver-Badour, now a sophomore at Central, admitted that the new
school was a little bit of a bigger change
for her. Class sizes went from 10-12 stu-
dents to about 20-30 students. They did
have to wear uniforms so coming here
was amazing for her because she gets to
freely express herself. “If you didn’t look
‘normal’ then the other kids would bully
you.”
Junior Marcos Facundo had a small
input on Handy Middle School. “With the
freedom of speech we have here would
have gotten you suspended there.” Facundo stated that there isn’t too much of a
difference from Handy to Central. The
rules were a little more strict.
