What is PET?
Primary Employers Tasmania (PET) is the State’s peak
employer organisation representing the interests of
agriculture, horticulture, viticulture, flower, nursery,
dairy, vegetable, hop and turf sector employers.
If you are an employer in one or more of these
sectors, we invite you to become a PET member.
PET provides specialised workplace relations
advocacy and advice to the Tasmanian primary
industry sector.
We also work closely with the National Farmers
Federation (NFF) in this specialist area and provide
up-to-date advice in a professional, efficient and
friendly manner to all Tasmanian primary industry
employers – all for one annual membership fee of

The mandated four-year review of all Modern
Awards commenced in 2014. The Pastoral,
Horticultural and Wine Awards are currently being
reviewed.
include overtime provisions for casual employees,
in addition there is a live claim to restrict the timeoff in lieu of overtime provisions in the Pastoral,
Horticulture and Wine Industry Awards.
This will be an important review if for no other
reason that the Modern Award Objectives were
amended by the previous Government. Taken
literally, the Fair Work Commission MUST now
ensure that modern awards provide a fair and
relevant minimum safety net of terms and
conditions, taking into account:

New Section 134 (1) (da) – the need to provide
additional remuneration for:




Employees working overtime;
Employees working unsocial, irregular or
unpredictable hours; or
Employees working on weekends or public
holidays; or
Employees working shifts.
The impact of any changes to the three rural
industry awards to reduce the current flexibilities in
respect of overtime and work on a weekend could
spell disaster for many employers. The AWU and
NUW have already lodged claims in the Fair Work
Commission to amend the Hours of Work
provisions in the Horticulture Award 2010 which will
