From the junction of Rt. 1 and Rt. 190 proceed north on Rt. 1 to the North

feet west of Rt. 1 behind the church.
A letter from Charles F. WASHBURN of No. Perry dated Dec. 26, 1989
states:
“This farm was originally settled by the DANA Family in 1828. They were
active in politics and became abolitionists, doing all they could to abolish
slavery and aid runaway slaves. As the story was handed down through the
family, the Dana farm was used as a station on the ‘underground railroad’ and
more than one runaway slave was owed across to St. Andrews under cover of
darkness. One middle-aged male slave, however, for reasons unknown, stayed
on and worked on the farm, about 100 feet west of the present-day Methodist
Church. I am not sure if there ever was a gravestone, but if so it has
undoubtedly disappeared or become overgrown. Unfortunately all of my
family’s records and diaries were destroyed in a fire so I know of nothing in
writing concerning this gravesite. I remember discussing this matter with my
grandfather and other family members, and they all believed the story was
true.”
Stones from a cemetery on this property have been found and will be returned
in the Spring.
