To link in with our Space them in science, we will write a science fiction story, an article for
a newspaper and poems about the universe. We will be focusing on the use of similes,
metaphors and personification as well as sentence structure and punctuation.
After half term, to link in with our Victorian theme, we will be writing a story with a
historical context. Also, we will be writing autobiographical accounts from a historical
perspective and we will study real life autobiographical accounts.
We will be focusing on calculations involved in addition, subtraction, multiplication and
division. We will also be learning how to add and subtract fractions and convert mixed
numbers and improper fractions. We will learn how to convert fractions to decimals and
identify equivalent fractions. We will understand that % can be written as fractions and
decimals. We will be using a protractor to measure and draw angles as well as learning how
to identify acute, obtuse and reflex angles. We will learn our times tables and increase the
speed in which we can recall them; we will also learn our square numbers. We will learn how
to read and interpret information in tables and on a line graph.
During a focus on ‘Earth and Space’ we will learn to describe the movement of the Moon in
relation to the Sun. We will learn to use the idea of the Earth’s rotation to explain day and
night, as well as describe the Earth’s movement in relation to the Sun.
When learning about forces, we will investigate the forces of gravity and air resistance, and
recognise that levers, pulleys and gears allow a small force to have a greater effect.
The children will learn about the safety of online gaming. The children will use the
SCRATCH software to design, write and debug programs that accomplish specific goals
including controlling or simulating physical systems. We will solve problems by
decomposing them into smaller parts, use sequence, selection, and repetition in programs.
Also we will work with variables and various forms of input and output, use logical
reasoning to explain how some simple algorithms work and detect and correct errors in
algorithms and programs.
We will learn about the Victorians through study of the local area. We will focus on
developments in farming and will visit the farming museum at Normanby Hall.
We will study the impact of the industrial revolution on our local area as the significant
turning point in British History. We will visit York Railway Museum to look at developments
in transport since the Victorian era.
Our Geography is linked this term with our History. We will be learning to name and locate
counties and cities of the United Kingdom, map land-use patterns and understand how some
of these aspects have changed over time. We will describe and understand key aspects of
types of settlement and land use and economic activity including trade links. We will use
maps, atlases, globes and digital/computer mapping to locate countries and describe the
features studied. We will use fieldwork to observe, human features (railways).
Our music will be linked to the songs of the Victorian music hall. The children will appraise,
compose and perform songs from this era.
Later in the term, the children will focus on the songs for the Young Voices performance.
In Art, we will focus on the work of William Morris (Victorian artist); we will use ideas from
his printing designs in order to create our own prints using more than one colour.
In DT, we will learn about how the Victorians used sewing techniques to create samplers.
The children will learn how to do different stitches to create a design for a calendar.
The children will also take part in a technology day delivered by engineers (circuits/ axles)
In gymnastics, the children will learn to create sequences involving flexibility, strength,
technique, control and balance. In games, the pupils will focus on competitive games skills
such as football and basketball. In dance, pupils will create, develop and perform a dance
pattern using flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance to link in with the theme of
Space.
In Re, the children will be learning about Christianity, Judaism and Islam. We will explore
the values, commitments, identity and diversity of these religions through exploration of their
codes of conduct and rites of passage.
In French, we will be learning how to read, write and say words relating to numbers, days of
the week, months of the year, times of the day, greetings, classroom instructions, colours,
fruits, food and Christmas themes.
