Loving Repeating
1
D I R E C TO R ’ S N O T E
In a radio interview, when blatantly insulted on the public’s ability to understand her opera Four Saints
in Three Acts, Gertrude Stein replied: “If you go to a football game, you don’t have to understand it in any
way except the football way...Don’t you see what I mean? If you enjoy it, you understand it, and lots of
people have understood it. You see, that is what my lectures are to be. They are to be a simple way of
telling everybody this thing, that if you enjoy it you understand it.”
Stein’s work was consistently concerned with the creation of possibility; with the new ways words could
mean and be used, with play, humor, and romance. Free of convention and even meaning, words could
be used in new forms. The gift Frank Galati and Stephen Flaherty have given us in this adaptation of
Stein’s life and works is an exquisite and accessible entry point into this use of language - itself a new
form. We do not see here a musical with a meet-cute plot and a happy ending; we see an abstract and
lyrical celebration of music, love, and creation.
Loving Repeating is about language. About play. About music. And, above all, about love, emotional and
erotic. And “when these lives are over - as all lives must be over someday - we have learned to understand
passion, feeling, and thought - which we seldom recognize in ourselves, much less in others.”
We ask that you celebrate with us while you’re here. That you relax and open to the possibilities of
repetition, of loving, and of joy.
“...if you enjoy it you understand it...”

Thank you so much for spending time with Kokandy Productions this season, an exciting year made
possible by your generous support of our work!
Throughout 2015, our goal has been to explore the warmth and beauty of humanity with vulnerability
and delight. To find hope in stories from the recent and not-so-recent past and contemplate how they can
illuminate a path for the future.
As part of our mission to expand our impact into the broader Chicago community, we’ve begun
to partner with local nonprofits to create a ticket-and-donation package, beginning with Loving
Repeating. Kokandy’s ‘Supporter Ticket’ program allows audiences to include a donation at the time of
ticket purchase. The proceeds from Loving Repeating’s Supporter Tickets will be given to Project Fierce
Chicago, whose mission is to reduce LGBTQ youth homelessness in Chicago by providing transitional
housing and support services to homeless LGBTQ young adults. Learn more about Project Fierce
at projectfiercechicago.org.
We hope you’ll join us as we move forward into our coming season. We’ll continue our celebration of
music and joy with our first ever holiday show in December: A Kokandy Christmas will honor (and poke fun
at) holiday television specials of the past, with laugh tracks, jingle bells, and favorite songs both new and
old. In the new year, we’ll use broad comedy and satire to explore the perils of contemporary life with the
midwest premiere of Heathers: The Musical and a hilarious revival of Gutenberg! The Musical.
Thanks for sharing your time with us, and we hope to see you at the theater again soon!
