1. Read simple text. Extract needed information from functional texts, e.g., newspapers, ads, etc.
2. Produce short written conversations. Supply information from memory about personal identification,
school, language, background and daily routine.
3. Apply basic vocabulary and grammar and pronunciation to understand and produce short
conversations on the topics of personal information, school, language background, and daily routine.
4. Demonstrate awareness of the most common cultural practices and traditions, forms of address,
and aspects of popular culture such as music and cinema.
SPOs (Student Performance Objectives)
1. Demonstrate understanding and comprehension of spoken Russian by responding correctly to
simple questions asked at normal speed and based
on the vocabulary and grammar covered in the course.
2. Demonstrate the ability to speak Russian by carrying on a simple conversation in the language and to express him/herself accurately within the range of structures he/she acquired and with the pronunciation
which will allow comprehension.
3. a) Read aloud simple texts and sentences with correct pronunciation
which demonstrates appropriate association of letter combinations
with sounds.
b) Show his/her understanding of the material read by summarizing or
identifying the most important points in the reading by correct
oral or written responses.
4. Write correctly elementary sentences and simple compositions using
the vocabulary and grammatical forms he/she has learned.
5. Locate and name at least three rivers, three mountain ranges, five
cities and three different climatic zones in the Soviet Union.
6. Identify
a) the two main influences on the Russian culture in the 10th and
11th centuries
b) the role of Peter the Great in the development of Russian culture
c) three great Russian composers and writers of the 19th century

CCOs (Course Content Outline)
First half of the semester: cover the first 9 lessons.
Second half of the semester: lessons 10-16.
Classwork activities
Classwork consists of grammar explanations, vocabulary, readings, conversation, questions and answers.
Readings
In each lesson the readings introduce the grammar and new words presented
in the lesson. Readings are also used for conversation practice. The
first lesson is an introductory lesson which includes written and printed
alphabets.
Pronunciation
The rules of pronunciation are presented with numerous illustrates and
phonetic drills over the first thirteen lessons. In the laboratory students are drilled on correct pronunciation and oral ability.
Grammar
Grammar covered in the first half of the semester: interrogative pronouns, genders, present tense of regular and some irregular verbs, imperative, declensions of hard nouns in the singular (with the exception
of the genitive case which is introduced in lesson 12), possessive adjectives.
In the second half of the semester: declensions of adjectives in the
nominative and accusative cases, demonstrative adjectives, personal pronouns, the verb to have, verbs of motion, the genitive case, adverbs,
the past tense, expressions of time, reflexive and reciprocal verbs.
Every new grammatical rule is used in the text of the given lesson, and
explained and illustrated by examples in the grammatical part, and subsequently used throughout the exercises. Practical application of the
rules of grammar and of declensions and conjugations is provided through
numerous fill-in and completion exercises, as well as in the English-toRussian translation exercises.

Conversations are conducted on various topics: the classroom, weather,
food, etc. The students are also given an introduction to Russian culture through film strips and slides.
Evaluation: the student''s progress is evaluated by written examinations
every two weeks and a two hour final examination which counts as two, one
hour examinations. Additional means of evaluation are the student''s home
work and participation in class activities.
