Wichita falls ISD 6th Grade Science Unit Planner Unit 7: Force and Motion Lesson 2: Changes in Force and Motion Time Frame: 5 days Objectives Skills: The student will be able to… • identify and describe the changes in position, direction, and speed of an object when acted upon by unbalance forces • calculate average speed using distance and time measurements • measure and graph changes in motion TEKS Supporting: 6.8C, 6.8D Other Science Concepts: 6.8B Scientific Process Skills: 6.1A, 6.1B, 6.2A, 6.2C, 6.2D, 6.2E, 6.3A, 6.3B, 6.4A ELPS: 1C, 2E, 3E Performance Indicators: By the end of the unit the student will have learned key concepts: • Key Concept 1: Potential energy is energy that is stored in a system. • Key Concept 2: Kinetic energy is energy of a moving object. • Key Concept 3: Energy can be transformed from potential energy to kinetic energy. Kinetic energy can be transformed into potential energy. • Key Concept 4: Energy can be transformed, but not created or destroyed. Answer Fundamental Questions: • How is potential energy converted into kinetic energy? • How do pendulums demonstrate potential and kinetic energy? Lesson Information Activities Engage• STEMscopes demonstration presentation and slideshow. Go through the presentation and slideshow with students and have them answer the questions in their science journals. • With the remaining time introduce the vocabulary. Have students make their own vocabulary cards using Student Vocabulary Cards (There are some words on the template that were not chosen to be on the vocabulary list.) • Students can get in groups and use their cards to quiz each other as to the word meanings as time permits. Explore• STEMscopes Force and Motion Explore Activity and Student Wichita Falls ISD (2013-2014) 6Sc Unit 7, Lesson 2 Vocabulary • Position- The Point or area occupied by a physical object • Direction- The path that an object is moving or facing. • Speed- The measurement of the rate of change of position with respect to time. • Force- A push or pull that changes the motion or position of an object. • Motion- A change in an object’s position, direction, or location. • Distance-Time Graph- A graph that represents distance traveled in increments of time. Process Skills TEKS must be incorporated into instruction as appropriate throughout the school year. 1 revised 11/22/13 Journal. o Student Guide o Student Journal • • Explain• Force and Motion Graphing Activity This can be done in groups to save paper if needed as the packet is rather long. Explore• Stemscopes Force and Motion Next Step Inquiry • • Balanced Forces- Forces on an object that do not change the motion of an object. Unbalanced Forces-Forces on an object that cause change in the motion of the object. Average Speed- Average distance covered by an object per unit time. Line Graph- A graph in which the data is represented by points connected by one or more lines. It shows change over time. Evaluate• Students write a short essay describing as best they can the forces that act upon a baseball as it is a. Thrown by the pitcher b. Hit by the batter c. Caught by a player in the outfield Essays should describe the forces that act on the ball as well as changes in speed and position (it heads directly over the pitcher’s mound). Optionally students can draw a distance-time graph showing the distance of the ball from the pitcher over time. Additional Information Materials/Resources • A soccer ball • Stopwatches • Meter sticks • A roll of duct tape • Calculators • Clipboards • 25m Metric Measuring tape • Plastic Sandwich Bags • Permanent Markers • Student Vocabulary Cards • Student Guide • Student Journal • Force and Motion Graphing Activity • Next Step Inquiry Notes from Council • Interventions o STEMscopes Guided Practice o STEMscopes CLOZE-ing in on Science o STEMscopes Concept Attainment Quiz Misconceptions/Underdeveloped Concepts • • Students may think that sustained motion requires sustained force. Students may think if there is no motion, there is no force acting upon an object.
