April Showers Bring May Flowers APRIL 2013 Newsletter Joanie’s Corner Bring on the April showers! There's nothing better than having fresh clean air to breathe and seeing colorful flowers to brighten the landscape...and our mood. While I have gone through a "drought" in my workouts, I tortured myself with endless selfimprovement. Now I'm doing it for my health and striving for my personal best. Nowadays, there's still a bit of vanity. Exercising for me is much more about sanity. If lifts my mood and gives me patience to drive a long way to and from work. I exercise so I can enjoy my life since my body is at my service and not the other way around. I am aware the seniors aren't as fit as they were decades ago but they're doing better than those who avoid exercise altogether. No point in going for perfectionism since it leads to exercising without enjoyment and for the wrong reason. Staying both fit and healthy means avoiding either extreme and continuing to work out regularly. Get out of your drought and banish the boredom. That is a mood brightener! I hope you all have a healthy April and don’t forget to cheer on those awesome Texas Rangers. Maverick Athletic Club MAVERICK CHILI COOK-OFF Who would have thought "wild hog" would be a choice of meat for chili? Along with turkey, venison and ground beef, all nine entries had that spicy kick to get your nose running! They all received "BEST" voting but the most votes went to Doug Robinson's “Kick Ass Chili”. He won the $20 gift card to Chili's. Second place went to chili cook-off pro Bruce Whitson for his “B.S. Chili”. He even brought his own cornbread pie to accompany his pot. Jane Semler earned a third place prize for her pot of “Celebrity Chili”. Thank you to all the Maverick members who brought crackers, cheeses, cornbread, chips and even desserts to help complete the meal as the voters marked their ballot. Next year we need someone to bring the Tums. Joanie Maverick Athletic Club 1919 W. Pioneer Pkwy. Since most of our classes are in the morning, exercises are most likely to bank a workout because they get it done before a daily routine gets in the way. Playing basketball during the lunchtime hour is a good time. Even in the evening classes, your body temperature is at its highest in late afternoon making your muscles more flexible. Any workout you do is a win and any time offers health perks. Come down and shoot some hoops, we have the basketballs already down on the court for you. Dance Like No One is Watching Dancing is a physical activity with a lot of movin' and groovin'. This was something we all used to enjoy when we were younger - or even now with the Senior Rec Center offering dances for the "older" population. Besides it being fun, we also reap the benefits of cardiovascular health, more energy, better balance, less stress and socialization. Even better, it's low impact. So......how about putting on your dancing shoes and applying your fancy footworks to the Maverick Prom? Details to follow - stay tuned! Lost and Found The winter season is the worst time to leave behind jackets, scarves, sweaters and anything left in the locker rooms. If you can't find your stuff at home, most likely it's here. Even jewelry, watches, and glasses are stashed in the front desk drawers. Please inquire with the front desk personnel of your lost treasure. Otherwise, Goodwill will make use of your product! Thanks. Shhhh! - Library! Since we don't have a librarian on staff, it would be considerate to put books on the shelves and not leave them in bags or boxes. No magazines, please. It seems Instructions and Self-Help books aren't in demand either. If you enjoy reading and sharing the books, please take care of the pages and use a bookmark. The Women's Fitness Center is being used frequently and it needs to be clutter-free of junk lying around. Thank you and happy reading.
