Year 2 Overview - Oliver House School

Week beginning 24th April 2017

In literacy this week we will revisit some grammar conventions including sentence
punctuation and commas in lists. We will be learning how to proof read and check
what we have written. Our Big Write focus will be writing a diary entry in the first
person including features of our grammar work.

In maths this week we will be making amounts of money using the least number of
coins, changing pennies into £s, and adding and subtracting 2 digit numbers.

Our science theme this first half term is How Things Grow! We will be looking at
animals parents and infants and finding out how animals grow and change.

In topic this week we will begin our ‘Florence Nightingale study’. We will start by
finding out about who she was and when she lived by looking at photographs.

In R.E this week we will begin our ‘Eastertide’ topic by learning about when Jesus
appeared to Peter and the other disciples after His resurrection.

In music this week will review the notes and musical notation from our prior
learning and introduce the crotchet rest. We will begin to learn to sight read rhythm
using an unturned percussion stave.

In P.E this term we will be working on striking and fielding as well as preparing for
sports day.
 In computing this half term we will begin our topic on Presentation Skills and start to
explore how to use PowerPoint.
Ways to help your child:


Listen to them read every night or ask them about key features of their reading
book when they write their book review.
Ask questions about the characters, plot and setting to check their understanding.
You could select words from the page to ensure their understanding of the
vocabulary they are encountering.

Encourage your child to focus on their homework tasks to the best of their ability,
presenting it to a high standard and proofreading their work to check for errors or
opportunities for improvement.

The spelling lists this term have been drawn up with your child’s personal spelling
needs in mind. We have looked carefully at the vocabulary your child uses most in
their free writing and analysed their spelling errors. You will find their spelling list is
slightly shorter than it has been and will not be the same for each pupil. The test
each week will be given in dictated sentences rather than a list. This will inform us
about how accurately they use this vocabulary in their free writing, which is what
spelling is all about! You can help your child prepare for this by asking them to write
spellings randomly selected from the list and by asking them to put the word into a
small simple sentence.

Practise the 2, 5 and 10 times tables’ division and multiplication facts for the test on
Friday. The test will involve the children applying these facts to solve word
problems.
It has been lovely to welcome the children back after their Easter break and
to see how eager they are to get back into their learning. We look forward
to working alongside you in what will be a busy, but exciting and, hopefully,
sunshine-filled term!
Kind regards,
Mrs Egbuonu and Mrs Rhodes
