Wind Speed Lab
The purpose of this lab is to be able to explore wind speed and the power contained within that wind. To accomplish this
objective, each student will be provided with an Excel file that contains all of the data points that were collected during
the video demonstration. Click here to watch the video demonstration or by going to http://youtu.be/KHN391JrotI.
Each student will need to submit a Third Order Polynomial Scattered Trend-Line graph (Excel file) and a completed “Lab
Results” form (Word Doc) for this lab. The student’s graph should be created by using Excel and it should look similar to
the Scattered Trend-Line graph which is included below. Student can download the data points for their graph by
clicking here or by going to
https://elearning.kctcs.edu/bbcswebdav/courses/JFC_4156_PHY_171_5501_75556/Content/Inegrated%20Physics%20C
oncepts/WindData.xls. The data points from this spreadsheet should be used to create a Third Order Polynomial
Scattered Trend-Line graph. The “Wind Speed” should be plotted on the graph’s horizontal axis and “Power” should be
plotted on the graph’s vertical axis.
Please Notes:
1. That the student’s graph will only display one scattered trend line for the data points. Student will also need to
download and the Lab Report Format document so they can submit their written results for this lab. Students should
make sure that they explain why the wind turbine (fan) stops as it get further away from the wind.
2. The 3rd order trend-line in Professor DiNoto’s graph is the red one. And the equation for that graph is also in red (note
the term raised to the third power).
