Volume XXXIV, Number 3 Fall 2013 A Message from the Provincial Two Ordained to Priesthood Dear Brothers and Sisters in Saint Martin, In his second letter to Timothy, a young pastor, Paul writes: “Refute falsehood, correct error, give encouragement, but do all with patience and care to instruct.” (2 Timothy 4:2) All of us are in need of instruction, correction, and patient, tolerant encouragement. How can any person seize, grapple with, and become enlightened by the faith which God bestows if another does not encourage him or her? As Pope Francis writes in his first encyclical, ‘The Light of Faith’ (Lumen Fidei): “Faith is passed on, we might say, by contact, from one person to another, just as one candle is lighted from another.” (p.#37.) In the midst of an ofttimes chaotic, violent and unreliable global society, we possess the capacity to encourage another without tight-fisted narcissistic grasping. In freely passing to another the light freely passed to us, we cannot help but demonstrate the reliability of God in Christ’s preaching, teaching, joys, sufferings, passion, death and resurrection. Generous encouragement shows the Way. God bless you, Pg. 2 Social Justice On June 22, 2013 at St. Peter Church in Memphis, TN, two of our friars, Fr. Augustine DeArmond, O.P. and Fr. Thomas Schaefgen, O.P., were ordained to the Priesthood. Most Reverend J. Terry Steib, Bishop of Memphis was the ordaining prelate. Many members of the Dominican family were present on this joyous occasion. Fr. Augustine is originally from Hammond, LA. He is now serving as Parochial Vicar of St. Peter Parish in Memphis. Fr. Thomas is originally from Memphis, TN. He now serves at St. Anthony of Padua Parish in New Orleans, LA as Parochial Vicar. Fr. Thomas has started an adult bible study class. He also says he enjoys priestly ministry, celebrating Mass and preaching everyday. He has enjoyed just getting to know the parish... it’s the everyday things, mostly. Fr. Augustine is very much involved in marriage prep and serving as an advocate in annulment cases for the Tribunal. He also particularly loves serving as co-chaplain at St. Agnes Academy/St. Dominic School. Fr. Chris Eggleton, O.P. Fr. Christopher T. Eggleton, O.P., Prior Provincial, Fr. Jeffery Ott, O.P. Promoter of Peace, Justice and Care of Creation My heart has been troubled by the events of the past several months in the U.S. that involve violence and firearms--a gun incident in New Jersey shopping mall, a shooting at the Los Angeles International Airport, the killings at a Washington, DC Naval Base, etc. Below please find a portion of the Dominican Call to Justice. I urge you to use it in your reflections and in your preaching especially as we move closer to Advent. As we await our Prince of Peace, Jesus Christ, we are called by these violent events and the Gospel mandate to act as peacemakers. What are we called to do? What are we doing? I invite your responses to these questions and other questions and hope to generate a fruitful conversation. Email me: [email protected] Yours in the struggle for Peace, fr Jeffery Peace and Security for All Life In a violent world obsessed with the illusion of security, we hear the Gospel call to non-violence, peace and the sacredness of all life. In particular, we commit ourselves to the abolition of all forms of war and the destruction of Earth and all living things, as well as advocacy for peoples and lands occupied unjustly and/or illegally. We commit to: • Educate ourselves and others to redefine our understanding of security for all life. • Engage in dialogue and advocacy with federal and state representatives for abolition of the death penalty. • Take a public stand opposing all forms of torture. • Join networks and groups that advocate for the eradication of nuclear weapons and all forms of mass destruction. • Dialogue with civic leaders and others regarding the use of weapons (nuclear, chemical, biological, drones, small arms, etc.). • Promote legislation that allows peoples the freedom to live on their own lands; support legislation that opposes the occupation of these lands by dominant groups. • Contact those corporations producing media that portray violent and demeaning behaviors. 45th Year of Presbyteral Ordination Celebrated by Fr. Michael Burke, O.P. Our class of 1968 celebrated its forty-fifth anniversary of presbyteral ordination at Providence College where Fr. Terry Keegan, O.P. and Fr. Donald Thibault, O.P. live. We were joined by Bishop Bertrand Boland, O.P., our ordaining bishop, who was a missionary in Pakistan for most of his life and who now lives at the College. Forty-four of us entered novitiate in Somerset, Ohio, August 5, 1961. Thirteen were ordained and four of us remain. We had a great time together, concelebrated the Eucharist with Bishop Boland and reviewed pictures of our times together in the Studium. We’re older, hopefully wiser, and very grateful for all these years of Dominican life and ministry. Fr. Michael Burke, O.P. Page 2 Memphis Gala On Thursday the 26th of September over 250 people gathered at Felicia Suzzane's restaurant in downtown Memphis for an evening of food, fellowship, music and silent auction. The recipients of the 2013 St. Martin de Porres award in Memphis were present as we were all reminded that the funds raised that evening were directed to our Education Fund for our student brothers. The award was presented to the honorees on November 3rd, the actual Feast of St. Martin de Porres, during a festive Mass at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Memphis. Barbara Daush and Pierre Landaiche, The honorees are Barbara Daush (President of St. Agnes Academy and St. Dominic's School) and Pierre Landaiche (President of the Memphis Cook Convention Center and Canon Center for the Performing Arts) both represent what this award has always stood for ... individuals who truly live in the Spirit of Martin! North American Provincials Meeting From June 7 - 14, 2013, the North American Provincials held their anual meeting. This year’s meeting was hosted by the Western Province in San Diego, California. The Provincials were joined this year by Fr. Dominic Izzo, O.P., the Master of the Order’s Socius for the United States Provinces. This annual gathering offers the Provincials the opportunity for fellowship as well as the time to discuss the needs of the Dominican Order in the United States. Fr. Dominic Izzo, O.P., Fr. Scott O’Brien, O.P., Novice Master at Frist Profession The Vocation world continues to be busy! We celebrated the profession of our novices on the 10th of August with a gathering of family, friends and friars. This beautiful event took place in the context of Mass at Holy Trinity Seminary Chapel. Less than two weeks later, on the 22nd of August and in the same Chapel, our new novices fresh off their pre-novitiate experience were vested with the holy habit during Evening Prayer. And just a few weeks ago at St. Anthony of Padua Priory in New Orleans we held our annual Dominican Experience Weekend for Fall 2013. Eleven young men from Texas to South Carolina and points in between gathered for a weekend of living and learning about the four pillars of Dominican life. Please continue to pray for vocations and the young men looking at our life!!! Prospective candidates with the friars at St. Anthony of Padua Priory in New Orleans, Louisiana for the Dominican Experience Weekend (DEW). Page 4 Friar Spotlight - Fr. David K. Seid, O.P. 1. How long have you been a Dominican? I entered the novitiate in August of 1997. I professed simple vows on the Eve of the Assumption in 1998 (8/14/98) and solemn vows on the Feast of the Translation of St. Dominic in 2001 (5/24/01). 2. What drew you to the Order? Being first-generation Chinese, I was raised with a strong sense of history and tradition. Thus, in the quest for universal faith, it was inevitable that I would outgrow my Protestant introduction to Christianity. However, I will always be grateful for what has never changed: a Christocentric worldview, a love for the Word of God, and preaching focused on grace and the salvation of souls. I’ve always been captivated by Dominic and Francis, by their passion for the Church, seeing in her God’s unwavering delight and transcendent purpose despite her weaknesses and imperfections shared with the rest of humanity. 3. What is your current ministry? I am a professor of psychology and the chair of the division of social, behavioral, and natural sciences at St. Joseph Seminary College (St. Benedict, LA), an undergraduate seminary run by the Benedictines. Additionally, I am one of the primary adjunct spiritual directors at “St. Ben’s.” I also see a few of the seminarians for counseling on referral by the rector or another spiritual director. 4. What kind of impact does a religious priest have at a diocesan seminary? I think that religious order priests are valuable assets in the formation of diocesan seminarians. They can be expected to demonstrate the apostolic fervor and intellectual creativity that should naturally arise when bringing a contemplative spirit to the arduous task of study. This is especially true for Dominicans, who are members of one the great historic missionary orders. Also, a religious priest’s personal experience of community life and practice of obedience—if well lived, i.e., in trusting response to God’s grace and providence in every situation—should provide a wealth of wisdom about the requirements and goals of human formation. 5. What do you think the future holds for college seminaries? I am told that enrollment has been rising at most college seminaries the last few years. From a financial standpoint, it makes sense that most dioceses and religious orders like prospective vocations to already have a degree by the time applications are submitted to admissions boards. However, the longer formation involved when a seminarian has to begin at the undergraduate level is often advantageous from the standpoint of human and spiritual formation. That most of our seminarians have been conditioned by a highly individualistic and narcissistic culture may mean that a longer period in formation will be needed by many. Also, it is important to note that most decisive first conversions today occur between the ages of 16 and 22. It is highly problematic to accept someone into a major seminary for future leadership in the Christian community who has been sacramentally initiated and active in the Church but has never developed a personal intimacy with God. Diaconate Ordination On October 19, 2013, Br. Cristóbal de la Encarnación Torres, O.P. was ordained to the Diaconate by Bishop George Scheltz, Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Galveston/Houston at Holy Rosary Church in Houston, Texas. Deacon Cristóbal will be in St. Louis, Missouri for the next year as he completes his studies. He will be ministering at local parishes. After he completes his studies, Deacon Cristóbal can petition to be ordained to the priesthood. Bishop George Scheltz, Deacon Cristóbal de la Encarnación Torres, O.P. and Fr. Christopher Eggleton, O.P., Prior Provincial Page 5 Zanmi Beni! Blessed Friends! Southern Province Dominicans Gather in Haiti for the dedication of the St. Rose of Lima Chapel The St. Rose of Lima Dominican Chapel is on the grounds of the Zanmi Beni, a children’s center located outside Port-au-Prince. Founded in the aftermath of the 2010 earthquake, 67 children call Zanmi Beni home, half of whom has some type of disability. Many of the children lost their parents in the earthquake and were found on the streets of Haiti or abandoned in the General Hospital. Operated by the internationally recognized nonprofit organization Partners In Health, the children at Zanmi Beni are provided with a permanent and stable home where love abounds. The chapel was built by Jennie Block, O.P. and her family in honor of the marriage of her daughter, Mary to Sean Herman. Mary and Sean were married at St. Vincent Ferrer in New York City on November 17, 2012, and the chapel was a gift to them to make certain that the poor would not be forgotten amidst the joy and plenty of the wedding festivities. The chapel, simple in design with a native stone outside walls, is filled with light from eight large and stunningly beautiful windows hand painted with transparent images of religious iconography. The windows were designed by Southern Province friar, Cristóbal Torres, O.P. and executed by Ft. Lauderdale artist, Deborah Griffin. Images of five Dominicans - Dominic, Martin de Porres, Rose of Lima, Margaret of Castello, and Teresa Chikaba join beloved Haitian patrons, Our Lady of Perpetual Hope and Pierre Toussaint, and Jesus surrounded by the Zanmi Beni children to create a prayerful and joyful space for the community to worship. Hundreds of people from the Haitian community gathered to join fifty friends and family who traveled from the states to spend the weekend in Haiti and participate in the first Mass in the Rose of Lima Chapel on July 14, Br. Nicholas Reynolds, O.P., Fr. Jorge Presmanes, O.P., 2013. Zanmi Beni, translates to “Blessed Friends” in Jennie Block, Fr. Mark Wedig, O.P., Br. Cristóbal Torres, O.P. , Fr. Scott O’Brien, O.P. and Paul Farmer Haitian Creole, and this was, indeed, a time of friendship and great blessings. Fr. Mark Wedig, O.P. and Fr. Eduardo Logiste, O.P. presided at the Eucharist in the chapel filled with the beautiful Zanmi Beni children, many Haitian friends from the local community and visitors from the states. Fr. Jorge Presmanes, O.P. preached on the Gospel story of the Good Samaritan and called for those present to go forth and “Zanmi Beni” others in a spirit of friendship and blessing. All present were blessed to be a part of this hopeful and joyful celebration, and we are grateful to the Dominican friars in Haiti who will serve as chaplains for the Zanmi One of the beautiful hand painted windows designed by Beni community. Konkel, O.P., Dominican Friar and Pastor Emeritus of Holy Rosary Church in Houston, died peacefully on Sunday afternoon, November 3, 2013, in the presence of his sister, Marguerite Marshall, his Dominican brother friars and friends. He was 82 years of age. Announcing The Dominican Arts And Artist Project A Ministry of the Southern Province In keeping with the Order’s long history of support for the arts and artists, the Southern Province is pleased to announce the launch of the Dominican Arts and Artists project. Our mission is two-fold: first, to promote the work of contemporary Dominican artists, and second, to develop works of art with Dominican themes. We hope to offer the Dominican family new and beautiful images that will connect us more deeply to our religious heritage and lead us more fully into the ancient Dominican practice of “Contemplari et contemplata aliis tradere,” that is, the contemplation of the mystery of God’s love and the generous sharing of that contemplation with others. We offer, with much gratitude to our artists, a variety of high quality note cards, holy cards and posters, and we will be adding new artists, images and products on an on-going basis. Please visit our website and on-line store at: www.opsouth.org www.dominicanartsandartists.com Page 7 We thank you, our donors, for your generous support.
