Five of the clubs in our district applied for funds by September 15, 2014, and each will receive $500 in support of a Rotary Day in their communities. Those clubs are Bardstown, Campbellsville, Henderson, Paducah, and South Louisville/Okolona. This is an outstanding way to make nonRotarians in the community aware of the service Rotary provides and the benefits of membership. To encourage more clubs to get involved in ROTARY AWARENESS, I am reopening the opportunity to apply for funds in support of Rotary Day; this time the maximum that will be awarded to a club is $250. The application is available on the district website, and must be submitted electronically by Monday, February 2, 2015. And, keep in mind the dates of May 15-17, 2015, when our District 6710 Conference will be held in Paducah, and all Rotarians (not just club officers) will have the opportunity to celebrate Rotary and share their club successes. Save The Dates! Let's keep this year's theme in mind and continue to "Light Up Rotary" this month! At the December 12, 2014 meeting, the South Oldham Rotary Club once again presented checks to the Oldham County Schools located in Crestwood. President John Oliva presented checks to representatives of Camden Station Elementary, Crestwood Elementary, Kenwood Station Elementary, South Oldham High School and South Oldham Middle School. The schools utilize the funds for students that have needs like coats and shoes. Camden Station Guidance Counselor Brittany Ford shared this information"For many years the South Oldham Rotary has made a monetary donation to Camden Station's Indigent Fund. Many only think of academic and athletic achievement when thinking of our schools. And many don't realize the need in our schools; school supplies, clothing, shoes, food, etc., that our students come to school with every day. Without their basic needs being met, students cannot learn to their highest ability. Without outside donations from the South Oldham Rotary and other community organizations, we could not do what we do for kids. My wish is that when anyone sees money being collected by our great organizations here in Oldham County, that they will donate, because it benefits the students in their community schools." While Oldham County is a very affluent area, there are still many students with a real need in our community and these funds go a long way to help the students. David Bizianes booked the comedians. Cleveland Jackson, Tim Northern And Sean Keller. As usual, it will be at the O.C. Art Center in Crestwood. Included are the two bios we have on Tim and Cleveland. TIM NORTHERN Following humorist Tim Northern's appearance as a finalist on the nationally televised Star Search, Naomi Judd raved about his performance. "He's the only one that could be a member of Mensa", she said. "I absolutely adore the cerebral humor." Noted intellectual (and former game show host) Ben Stein agreed with her assessment, adding his own accolade, "I love that fact that he assumes his audience has a brain!" Coming from an Ivy League presidential pundit, that's high praise indeed for someone who never set foot in college. "It was a great moment," Tim says. And it's exactly the response he's hoping for each and every time he takes the stage. "That's what I'm striving for. I provide you with two-thirds of the joke, and you provide the other third. It's like do-it-yourself comedy." That do-it-yourself approach is paying off for the Nashville native, whose influences are a veritable Who's Who of comic genius. "George Carlin, Richard Pryor, Steven Wright I like all of em." Once Tim takes control of the mike, he relies on much the same type of material that those classic comedians used to land in the national spotlight plain and simple, Tim Northern is a word man. "Love words. Love em!" Tim says. His enthusiasm for words and language results in what can aptly be described as humor for the thinking person, a unique combination of intellect and fun-filled observation. And yet, it's mainstream humor that everyone understands. Simply put, Tim Northern is punster of the highest caliber. "A lot of people say puns are the lowest form of humor," he admits. "It's knowing how to pull em off that makes it work. I basically do set-ups and punch lines. I don't tell stories. I don't try to preach. I don't try to come up with some kind of point of view. I'm making fun of words, cleverly disguised puns." And he does it - for the most part with a straight face. Unlike some comics who laugh at their own jokes, Tim prefers to present an observation to his audience. He allows them time to ponder what he's said, then lets them do the laughing. "If I did it with a big grin, it would be very cornball. My delivery of the puns makes them more palatable. I don't wanna laugh, because then the audience will know that's when they're supposed to laugh. I'd rather for them to laugh when they're supposed to without my prompting." But, like any humorist, sometimes the absurdity of what Tim's Continued on next page 8 As The Wheel Turns Upcoming Events (cont.) saying does tickle his funny bone. "There are times when I laugh just because it's so silly," he says. "I'll laugh at the absurdity of what I said - but very sparingly. I don't want that to be a crutch. I do jokes about the most absurd things, and I know the audience is thinking, How is that gonna be funny? That's when I give them a chance to put it all together. It's smart humor." Tim continually hones that smart humor, seeking and finding new turns of phrase on a daily basis. On the road for much of the year, he uses that travel time for wordplay whenever possible. "I'm excited when I'm in a different town, a different setting," he says. "It gets my creative juices going, gets me thinking more. I might just be talking to people, or else reading a newspaper when something will hit me a weird sentence, maybe. I'll explore it, and things happen." Cleveland Jackson Another fine product from the birthplace of Art Modell, The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and the worlds first flammable river ...It's the "Dazzling Suburbanite Humor of Ohio's Native Son: William "CLEVELAND" Jackson. Inspirational? No. Role Model Not even close. Entertaining? Well, yeah if you got that kind of time. "I started doing stand up on the second Tuesday in March of 97 and I don't think I want to do anything else". Browns Town Native, United States Paratrooper, Ex Trucker, Strip Club DJ and failed Radio Talk Show host "Cleveland" stirs a mixture of life with common sense views, the beauty of "Clashing Cultures" and a few interpretive dance steps (it keeps the Endowment for the Arts checks rolling in) into a "Ditch-Digger-meets Dignitary" show that is sure to entertain, if not improve your golf handicap. "The road has been great to me, the places I've been, the people that I've met out there, worked with, I really feel blessed."
