Algebra I CBA – REVIEW 1) Suzy is planning her wedding and has a max budget of $5000 for the reception. The reception hall is a flat fee of $3200, and plates of food are $25 per guests. If x represents the number of guest invited, which of the following inequalities best represents Suzy’s budget for the reception? a) 3200 + 25x > 5000 b) 3200 – 25x > 5000 c) 5000 + 25x < 3200 d) 3200 +25x < 5000 2) Felicity is planning her quinceañera. The total cost c, is determined by a one-time fee of $500 for the banquet hall and $25 per person p that attends. The equation for the total cost is represented by the equation c = 500 + 25p. If Felicity has a total budget of $3750, how many people can she invite? Basic Percentages Percentages can be tricky. Normally there are represented by a % sign. They can also be represented by a decimal. For example: 20% can be represented by .20, 30% by .30, etc. 100% is represented by 1, 200% by 2, etc… If we want to show an INCREASE in something with a percent, the equation is represented as follows: x + .25x What this shows is that we want to have 25% more of x. Percentages are a fraction of a whole piece. They are a PART of 100%. We want to find out how many ounces Are gained when we get 25% of soap Amount = 10 oz 25% more means 10 + ((25% of 10 oz)) 10 + .25(10) = 12.50 oz If we want to show a DECREASE in something with a percentage, we setup the equation the same way, but we SUBTRACT the percent value. Presenting the NEW Jennifer Hudson… Available now with 25% LESS 25% less means 200 – 25% of 200 200 - .25(200) 200 – 50 = 150 PRACTICE!!!! 3) When a baby is born it is expected that it’s birth weight with increase by 300% it’s first year (that’s TRIPLED). If the average weight of a baby boy is 8 pounds, what is the final weight expected when it is 1 year old? 4) When an iPad is being used constantly, it loses 15% of it’s battery life every hour. At 8 am, Doc Todd’s iPad is charged at 100%. If she acts like one of her students and uses it constantly for 3 hours, how much battery life is left at 11 am? FUNCTION NOTATION BASICS f(x) is saying “y is a FUNCTION of x” if f(x) = x + 2; f(7) = 7 + 2 5) f(x) = 6x - 2(x + 4) - 3(x + 3) Find f(2), Find f(0) Find f(-2) 6) f(x) = 2x – 4(x + 1) + 3(4 + x) Find f(2) Find f(1) Find f(0) [[[[[Fun with Brackets]]]]] Brackets are extended parentheses Brackets keep track of groups of numbers, variables, and parentheses before distribution Your turn to practice… 7) 3[ a + 2(3 + a)] 8) 7[ d + 3 + 7d + 2 + 4(d + 2d)] Guessing Game… What step is next? Take the following equations and decide which of the choices is the correct for the next step 9) 10) Inequality Practice HINT: Is y greater or less than x in each situation? 11) 12) 13) Verbal Representations of Equations and Inequalities Distributive Property: The product of 3 and the quantity 4 + x is 16 3(4 + x) = 16 The sum of 25 and a number times 3 is 100 3(25 + x) = 100 Inequalities: The difference of 7 and a number is less than 12 7 – x < 12 A number times the sum 4 and 2 is greater than or equal to 12 x(4 + 2) > 12 14) The difference of 12 and a number, times 3 is less than 50 15) The sum of 4 and a number is less than 2 times a number plus 2
