thelion The Newsletter of The Portsmouth Grammar Junior School Issue No.84 To The Parents Stella the Starfish There has been a lot going on at the Junior School this week and I am also looking forward to a busy few days ahead. The summer term always brings an enjoyable mix of events as we draw towards the end of this academic year and start to prepare for the next. The Year two children transported a captivated audience to a magical underwater world this week, as they performed their musical, Stella the Starfish. They told the story beautifully, using words, dance and song of Stella’s search for her family. On Wednesday we welcomed a large number of new faces to the Junior School, as our new pupils for September joined our own children to meet their Form Teachers for September. We then welcomed their parents to a special information evening. We had the very special Year Two musical, the Year 6s presented their Independent Learning Projects to their parents and we welcomed our pen-pals from France. Year Ones have had a day at the beach and Nicol House burned off some calories with their workout for their charity, Lepra. There were lots of outstanding solos, some impressive acting and lively dancing, as characters like Terry the Turtle and Sid the Shark were brought This Sunday is of course the Summer to life. Well done Year Two. Fete and I hope that you are able to join us for this lovely family event and please, no extra practice for the sponge the teacher stall! On Monday our lower and upper junior school choirs will be singing Ahoy! Sing for the Mary Rose at the Guildhall, as part of the Portsmouth Festivities. We have already sold close to 1000 tickets but there are still plenty left if you would like to see something very special. Pupil Council Our Pupils Councillors for 2012/13 met for the last time last week and I would like to thank them all for being such an enthusiastic and intelligent group. They have come up with some really good ideas on how to improve the School and have represented their classmates superbly. Well done. 21st June 2013 Rory’s Story of the Week Rory has many friends in the animal kingdom with good memories; Eddy the elephant, Charlie the chimp, but none are as impressive as Thomas who was the first Junior School pupil to make it to the national Junior Memory Championship finals, appropriately at London Zoo. Memory Man During the spring term, Mr Hopkinson held a memory club (for year six pupils only) and we prepared for the Junior Memory Championship qualification test that took place at the end of the term. The test was based on four categories; digits, words, names/faces and text. Out of many thousands of pupils that took the test, 19 children (including me) qualified for the final. On Sunday 9th June I travelled to London Zoo to participate in the Junior Memory Challenge National Final. After we took the test we went on a free tour of the zoo. When we returned from the tour, the top 3 scores for each category and the overall top 3 were announced. I didn’t manage to reach the top 3 but I did come 2nd in the words category. I remembered 36 words out of 50 words in a time limit of 5 minutes. Overall it was a great experience and I hope more pupils from our school will participate in the club and qualify for the Junior Memory Challenge National Final. By Thomas Placintescu Meet the Staff Earlier this week you were sent a ‘Meet the Staff’ booklet. There were a couple of minor errors contained within and I apologise for any confusion this may have caused. An updated version is now available on MyPGS. PS Hopkinson Headmaster Thomas pictured with all the finalists at London Zoo Nursery News Lucus the tortoise came for a visit to Nursery at the end of last week. She belongs to Ms Todman, who kindly agreed to bring her in so the children could have a hands on approach to learning. The children found out all kinds of interesting facts about tortoises. Lucus likes to eat cabbage, cucumber and Ms Todman’s plants in her garden! The children drew wonderful observational drawings of Lucus and used lots of lovely words to describe her shell and what she felt like. Making Waves In Year One we have been stimulated by the colours of the sea to mix different shades of blue. We have had a wonderful time using fine brushes to carefully create our paintings. Just like a real artist, we took our time and revisited our work to add more detail and make any changes. We were delighted with our finished pieces and would like to share them with you. Oceans Alive Last Thursday Year Two went to the Senior School Science Department. They watched with excitement as Mr Goad froze marshmallows using dry ice. The children then experienced a variety of scientific experiments involving water to link with this term's project, Ocean's Alive. Year Six pupils teach Year Two about the 5Ks of Sikhism Life’s a beach! We came back to school on Monday to find our home corner had turned into a Beach Café. We have been making yummy ice cream sundaes and sitting under the colourful parasol. It has been very relaxing and lots of fun. Summer Fete The Summer Fete will be taking place on Sunday 23rd June from 11.00am until 2.30pm at Governors Green. There will be a range of events including cream teas, a variety throwing! To advertise or book a commercial stall please contact Mrs Laura Appleby-Mell at [email protected]. Pupils in Year Six have worked collaboratively over a three week period to create booklets for the Year Two children. The booklets have been designed to teach the younger pupils about five special Sikh symbols. The older children thought carefully about their designs, considering their choice of suitable vocabulary, use of puzzles and quizzes and original illustrations to interest their younger audience. Table Tennis Club At the end of the project the children met together to share the booklets and the Year Two pupils wrote letters to express their gratitude for the efforts of the Year Six Children. There will be no table tennis club on Wed June 26th. Choir Club There will be no Year 5/6 or Year 3/4 choir club on Monday 24th June. We will see you at the Guildhall for 5.30pm for the ‘Ahoy’ concert. thelion’s HEADMASTER’S AWARDS The following Headmaster’s Awards were awarded: Samuel Hargreaves for his constant enthusiasm The annual 20/20 cricket match against PGS staff is taking place on 9th July at Hilsea commencing at 5:30pm. The teachers have been unbeaten for the past 5 years so we are in need of some new talent. If you are interested in playing, umpiring or scoring please email [email protected] An impressive 25 teams were entered into this year’s Local Schools Football Tournament. We were lucky with the excellent playing conditions. A fair play handshake before each match was warmly received by players, staff and parents. The respect tone was set for a very enjoyable but competitive tournament. There were five groups of five teams with the winners going through to the knockout stages and the three best second placed teams also going through. The group stages were a battle with every team scrapping for points. 8 teams eventually played themselves into the Quarter Finals. Langstone Juniors managed to get both their A and B teams through with some impressive performances. PGS A, Gatcombe Park, St Johns, Solent and Arundel also went through. The quarters were extremely tight with lots of 1 – 0 wins. Gatcombe Park turned over St Johns 3 – 0 and were looking like favourites. PGS A, Solent, Gatcombe Park and Arundel all went into the semis. A brave performance by all the teams so far. The final was competed between PGS A and Gatcombe Park. PGS settled well into the final, carving out a couple of early chances. However, it was Gatcombe Park who struck an early but decisive blow scoring a well worked goal. This proved to be the match winner. A thoroughly deserved tournament, winners proudly received their medals from Mr Hopkinson. U11 Hampshire 8 a side Cricket Competition The Portsmouth Grammar School hosted this year’s U11 Hampshire Cup Finals Day on Monday 17th June. The four teams that qualified for the finals were PGS, Churchers College, Twyford, and Sherbourne. The format was 8 a side pairs cricket. The batting team would start on 200 and each pair was allowed 3 overs each to score as many runs as possible. If a batsman was out they lost 5 runs to the overall total. The fielding side were allowed 2 overs per bowler. Semi Finals PGS v Churchers College Twyford v Sherbourne PGS fielded first and restricted the opposition to 223 which was less than 2 runs per over. The batting pairs were set and the boys seemed confident. A bit too confident as it turned out with a catastrophic batting display with PGS losing 12 wickets. We ended up with a total of 196! The boys were in shock and unfortunately had to battle it out in the 3rd/4th placed match in the afternoon against Sherbourne. The final was a one sided affair with Twyford smashing an impressive 101 runs off 12 overs. Churcher’s College were brave and deserved to finish second. Twyford thoroughly deserved to win the competition and now qualify for the southern regional finals.
