Being dyslexic it did little for her spelling (apart from the revelation that there are far more vowel sounds than signs), but it did open the magic window to an abiding love of verse, speaking, literature, theatre and indeed to her future career. It was while writing a thesis at teacher training college that Anne was introduced to the world of Drama in Education, inspired by the work of Peter Slade and Brian Way. With her first husband David Harris (then Drama Advisor in Durham and later in Suffolk), Anne became very involved in this type of work in schools and workshops. In Durham, together they formed a touring Shakespeare company and a religious drama society. David's move to Manchester to become Director of the then Polytechnic Theatre School saw Anne opening her own school of speech and drama and she also formed a touring recitals group in Cheshire. About the time of David's all too early death in 1984 Anne became Head of Drama at The Grange School, Hartford, where during the next ten years she extended private speech and drama lessons to curriculum drama throughout the school, and eventually to GCSE Drama and A Level Theatre Studies. During the 1980s Anne also became an adjudicator for the Federation of Festivals and an examiner for the English Speaking Board and Guildhall School of Music & Drama. More recently she also become an examiner for Poetry Vanguard. As a former teacher Anne fully appreciates the commitment required to prepare students for festivals. As a mother of two daughters who took part in festivals she knows well the parental palpitations of these occasions. Finally, as an adjudicator she admires tremendously the hard work of the committee and everyone involved. It is they who make a festival a happy and rewarding experience for all participants. Anne is looking forward to her return to Hazel Grove Festival which she remembers well as being one of the very first festivals at which she adjudicated many years ago. COLIN SNELL BA, PGCE, FRSA Colin Snell is based in Preston and is the artistic director of the Parker and Snell Company, which is located on the Isle of Man and runs workshops for adults and young people in television, film and theatre both in the Isle of Man and the UK. He is also a director and productions, both amateur, pro-am, professional and youth theatre, are staged regularly at the 850seater Gaiety Theatre, Douglas, and also the Theatre by the Lake, the Brewery Arts Centre, Kendal, the Buxton Opera House, the Grand Theatre, Blackpool and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. He is a former Head of English and Drama and Director of Drama in state and independent schools and an examiner and moderator for a number of national examination boards. He is a member of the Guild of Drama Adjudicators (GoDA) and regularly adjudicates at one-act and full-length play festivals, an adjudicator member of the British and International Festival of Festivals, a member of the Society of Teachers of Speech and Drama and an examiner for the London Academy of Music and Drama (LAMDA) which has taken him across the UK and Ireland and, most recently, as far as Africa. He is an adjudicator for the Cheshire Theatre Guild's Full Length year-long festival, assistant secretary of the National Drama Festivals Association (NDFA) and a panel member of the George Taylor Memorial Prize for new writing (one act plays). He reviews amateur and professional theatre for a number of internet publications and became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in 2009. MUSIC ADJUDICATORS CAROLINE CLEMMOW ARAM, ARCM, LRAM Caroline Clemmow was awarded a piano scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music where she won many prizes for both solo and ensemble playing. As a chamber musician she collaborated with many instrumentalists and singers, and became a founder member of the Hartley Piano Trio, which gained international recognition by its concert and festival appearances, broadcasts and numerous recordings, including the complete trios of Spohr on the Naxos label. While also performing concertos and giving recitals as a soloist Caroline derives particular pleasure from the field of chamber music; she has worked with such diverse groups as Serenata, Kaleidoscope and the Koenig Ensemble, and has covered an extremely wide repertoire, ranging from the classics and romantics to complex twentieth-century works. In addition to this wide range, collaboration with Evelyn Glennie has resulted in the performance of percussion-and-piano repertoire. Her many activities have led to numerous London concerts, regular broadcasts and invitations to major festivals. An important part of her work is the celebrated piano duo with Anthony Goldstone, described by Gramophone as “a dazzling husband and wife team”. They are critically acclaimed for their pioneering broadcasts and CD recordings which now number forty, including a ground-breaking seven-CD cycle of the complete original piano duets of Schubert. Their B.B.C. broadcasts have often included first hearings of unjustly neglected works, and they have built up an international following. As a teacher, Caroline is experienced in advanced tuition, with former pupils pursuing music studies in prestigious London institutions and at Oxford University. Adjudication (including B.B.C. Young Musician, International Young Concert Artists etc.), coaching (various summer schools) and examining (for the Associated Board) also form part of her varied career. 4 SAM DUNKLEY MA, BMus(Hons) Sam Dunkley is a Yorkshire based music education consultant and community musician. MARIA JAGUSZ GRNCM Maria Jagusz trained as a dancer before taking up a place at the Royal Northern College of Music where she was awarded the Ricordi Prize for Opera. Further scholarships enabled her to continue her studies at the National Opera Studio. Since then she has worked as a soloist for most of the leading opera companies in the UK and Europe. Her roles include Carmen, Cherubino, Orlofsky, Hansel, Dorabella and Rosina. She has performed with many of the world’s leading singers including Domingo, Carreras, Freni and Dame Felicity Lott. She is a keen recitalist and a regular soloist for choral societies in the UK, and future work includes recitals in Wiltshire and Cornwall and singing the role of Burykovka in ‘Jenufa’ for Opera Project this summer. She has been awarded the title of Honorary Chairman of the Silurian Consort for her contribution to music in the Cotswolds. ANGELA ROWLEY BA (HONS), PGCE, ARCM, MISM Angela, a graduate in German from University College, London, followed a career in teaching before embarking on voice training with Keiran McNiff and working subsequently with many eminent teachers including the late Paul Hamburger. Angela’s first experiences of public performance were at school, at Music Festivals and in choral societies. She encourages her pupils to enter festivals for the opportunity to perform, hear peers and receive professional critique. Her hopes are that the experience will be challenging, educational and fun! Angela has performed widely in the UK and in Germany, France and Romania and still performs regularly in recital, concert and oratorio with an extensive repertoire. She loves to sing Lieder, chansons and especially 20 th century English song. 5 Angela directs and conducts Harmony '96, a large ad hoc choir which performs major oratorios twice a year. In 2015 the choir performed Beethoven’s 9th Choral Symphony with the Hazel Grove Orchestra. She is also MD of Eccles Community Choir, enjoying an opportunity to develop the voices of those who were never allowed in the school choir! The choir visited Salford’s twin town of Lünen, Germany, in 2015 and ’16 with performances in Cologne cathedral and last year was invited to be part of an international choir which performed Howard Goodall’s ‘Eternal Light’ in the Carnegie Hall, New York. For several years Angela taught singing in a large comprehensive school and later in a Sixth Form college where she formed a choir, assisted in the production of musicals and initiated the development of music in the curriculum for students with both mild and severe learning difficulties. She is a firm believer that music is an essential life skill and that no one should be excluded on grounds of ability. Angela’s students and choir have participated in the writing and production of original works as part of the BBC Philharmonic’s Community Programme and performed in the Proms at the Albert Hall and for the Queen on her visit to Media City, Salford. Angela has a private practice and regularly runs performance workshops and masterclasses. She is busy as an adjudicator where she endeavours to encourage performers, drawing on her own love of music and poetry and experience as a performer and teacher. Alongside her singing career Angela runs a charity in Kenya with her husband. www.rowleyprojects.com MICHAEL TYLER SHELTON GNSM (Hons), LTCL(TD), DipEd With over 40 years of professional experience, Michael’s appointments demonstrate his passion to enhance all aspects of musical education, performance and assessment.
