Barcelona Motorcycle Museum Barcelona is the European city with the highest number of motor- A unique place in the heart of the Gothic quarter where you will find out that a motorbike is a lot more than a leisure and mobile option bikes per inhabitant and it has a long tradition in the two wheels world from multiple perspectives (social, economic, industrial, sport, leisure, urban, etc.). The Barcelona Motorcycle Museum invites you to discover it, with more than 70 motorbikes of national and international brands. This museum goes beyond the mere technical perspective of the vehicles. Each one of the bikes on display contains personal stories, curiosities, anecdotes... It lets you to see the evolution of the 20th century society, focusing in Catalonia and Spain, where this industry had and still has, a remarkable role in different aspects. The Barcelona Motorcycle Museum is a private initiative, managed by the Motorcycle Museum Foundation Mario Soler, a non-profit entity that works in order to promote the motorcycles values, its past, present and future and is in charge of the Bassella Motorcycle Museum as well. 2. The exhibitions 600m2 split in the permanent collection and temporary exhibitions that are periodically renewed Permanent exhibition Motorbike: Society, Industry and Competition An interesting tour to discover every single aspect and facets that make a motorcycle a special and unique item. Means of transportation? A solution against traffic jams? An object of desire? Sport? Yes: a motorcycle is all that and much more. Very few day-to-day use objects in our lives combine functionality and pleasure in such an accurate way. Who does not specially remember the first motorcycle in their lives, or the one of the neighbour, relative, friend or even an acquaintance? In this new permanent exhibition at the Barcelona Motorcycle Museum we encourage you to discover every single aspect and facets that make a motorcycle a special and unique item, grouping 40 motorcycles of both national and international brands, including several prototypes and unique models worldwide. The visitor will find 5 different areas : 1. Motorcycle and society From the beginning of the motorcycle as a vehicle for elitist users until nowadays as a powerful tool to move around in the big cities, not forgetting its role during the two World Wars during the 20th century in Europe or its recreational and creative aspects. A Belgium FN of 1913, a small Moto Guzzi Hispania produced under license in Barcelona in 1953 or a curious Nimbus manufactured in Denmark by the well-known hoover brand Nilfisk, are some of the jewels of this first section of the exhibition. 2. Competition Motorbikes and competition have always gone hand in hand, becoming a great field for technical solution experimentation, that has been subsequently implemented in the mass production. This area includes different models and unique racing prototypes from an early Harley Davidson of 1915 to the Honda NSR with which Sito Pons won his two world 250cc titles in 1988 and 1989. This section shows also images of the most mythical races of the world, like the 24Hours Endurance of Montjuic, the Tourist Trophy at the Isle of Man or the Dakar Rally. 3. Industry Motorcycle industry has had a crucial importance in the economic and social development in many countries. Brands like Harley-Davidson in the United States, Ducati or Piaggio in Italy or BMW in Germany, etc. are an intrinsic part of the history in their respective nations. This room is a tribute to the most important motorcycle brands, from the beginning till the Japanese power , like Honda, the biggest motorcycle manufacturer in the world with an approximate manufacturing output of almost 17 million units yearly. 4. Catalan Motorcycle Catalonia takes up a place of honour in the motorcycle world’s map. Some of the most famous brands in history like Bultaco, Derbi, Montesa or OSSA have been produced here, together with more than 150 different motorcycle brands. The visitor will see a Simó prototype, the first brand registered in Catalonia and Spain and mythical models exported from Barcelona around the world. 5. Motorcycle and Cinema The charm and the epic of motorcycle has inspired many film makers. From the Vespa 125 of Roman Holidays to the Triumph Trophy in The Great Escape, as well as the Harley-Davidson in Easy Rider or Terminator, motorbikes have been the main characters in many films. Temporal exhibition Apart from the permanent exhibition, the Barcelona Motorcycle Museum also holds temporary exhibitions that are periodically renewed. A historical building The Barcelona Motorcycle Museum is located in the heart of Gothic quarter, at the basement of the former convent Sant Felip Neri (from 12th century), a unique rehabilitated place keeping the original architectural. 4. Activities The Barcelona Motorcycle Museum offers different services and activities to take advantage of the visit: Specific educational workshops for schools (children, elementary and secondary education) and technical visit s for mechanics, engineering or industrial design students. Family activities ( Storytellers, special guided tours,…). Conferences, symposiums and tributes related to motorsport.
