Permanent exhibition
Motorbike: Society, Industry and Competition
An interesting tour to discover every single aspect and facets that make a motorcycle a special and unique item.
Means of transportation? A solution against traffic jams? An object of desire? Sport? Yes: a motorcycle is all that and much more. Very
few day-to-day use objects in our lives combine functionality and pleasure in such an accurate way. Who does not specially remember
the first motorcycle in their lives, or the one of the neighbour, relative, friend or even an acquaintance?
In this new permanent exhibition at the Barcelona Motorcycle Museum we encourage you to discover every single aspect and facets
that make a motorcycle a special and unique item, grouping 40 motorcycles of both national and international brands, including several
prototypes and unique models worldwide.
The visitor will find 5 different areas :
1. Motorcycle and society
From the beginning of the motorcycle as a vehicle for elitist users
until nowadays as a powerful tool to move around in the big cities, not forgetting its role during the two World Wars during the
20th century in Europe or its recreational and creative aspects. A
Belgium FN of 1913, a small Moto Guzzi Hispania produced under
license in Barcelona in 1953 or a curious Nimbus manufactured
in Denmark by the well-known hoover brand Nilfisk, are some of
the jewels of this first section of the exhibition.
2. Competition
Motorbikes and competition have always gone hand in hand, becoming a great field for technical solution experimentation, that
has been subsequently implemented in the mass production. This
area includes different models and unique racing prototypes from
an early Harley Davidson of 1915 to the Honda NSR with which Sito
Pons won his two world 250cc titles in 1988 and 1989. This section
shows also images of the most mythical races of the world, like
the 24Hours Endurance of Montjuic, the Tourist Trophy at the Isle
of Man or the Dakar Rally.
3. Industry
Motorcycle industry has had a crucial importance in the economic
and social development in many countries. Brands like Harley-Davidson in the United States, Ducati or Piaggio in Italy or BMW in
Germany, etc. are an intrinsic part of the history in their respective
nations. This room is a tribute to the most important motorcycle
brands, from the beginning till the Japanese power , like Honda,
the biggest motorcycle manufacturer in the world with an approximate manufacturing output of almost 17 million units yearly.
4. Catalan Motorcycle
Catalonia takes up a place of honour in the motorcycle world’s
map. Some of the most famous brands in history like Bultaco,
Derbi, Montesa or OSSA have been produced here, together with
more than 150 different motorcycle brands. The visitor will see a
Simó prototype, the first brand registered in Catalonia and Spain
and mythical models exported from Barcelona around the world.
5. Motorcycle and Cinema
The charm and the epic of motorcycle has inspired many film
makers. From the Vespa 125 of Roman Holidays to the Triumph
Trophy in The Great Escape, as well as the Harley-Davidson in
Easy Rider or Terminator, motorbikes have been the main characters in many films.
Temporal exhibition
Apart from the permanent exhibition, the Barcelona Motorcycle
Museum also holds temporary exhibitions that are periodically
